Hi there I absolutely love the way you care so much about Harry tne moth. He/she is a beautiful colour. It's been interesting watching him/her develop. I didn't really know anything about these moths until I found several massive elephant hawk moth catapillas in the garden. Loved your video. I have subscribed

I currently have 2 hornworm pupaes turning into hawkmoths possibly in June(I had more but died from mold sadly) and indeed spraying them with water will help them. I stuck them in eco earth because hornworms tend to burrow themselves in the dirt to metamorphosize. they're possibly going to hatch around June possibly! hope yours come out safe and healthy!

Hi wow thanx for these videos, I found one a week ago and now it shrank and it's under some leaves and flowers in a transparent box. I will keep it until it hatches. I wonder what temperature is good for the pupa phase? Like, is it ok if it's in the room around 18 degrees and can I touch it or just to leave it how it is? Should I change leaves around or no, since the caterpillar is not moving and eating anymore? I'm very excited :).

I have 3 in captivity at the moment, they are still in catepilla stage, due to the hot weather I am misting them every couple of hours and they are feeding on Fusia plants, looking forward to see them as moths in May, good video and very informative

I live in Australia and I have Pale Brown Hawk Moths and my last 2 haven't come out of their chrysalis but I think because it's Autumn they'll wait until Spring. They get so so fat while they're caterpillars.
@RobbertNyhan
@RobbertNyhan 7 лет назад
so stupid question, then again I don't raise these things so I should randomly know this, but since it can wiggle around while being transformed into a moth, why doesn't it die from lack of food? or is that why larva eat nonstop so they have enough food stored up for the long 7-month chrysalis?
@willwithers8171
@willwithers8171 7 лет назад
Robbert Nyhan it eats non stop in its larval stage so it has enough energy to complete its metamorphosis. The wriggles are a method of deterring predators and doesn't use that much energy and only does it when they feel threatened or are close to emergence to stretch out a bit

I wonder if that's what I have. Found this reddish pupae in the dirt after my dad found it rolling off a leaf in the garden. Been trying to keep it moist in the jar, but would it be best to add dirt? I know it's still alive as it flinched when I touched it. Live in a desert area, so any advice would be helpful! ^^

Leopard Gecko What I spotted was a "common" or viviparous lizard. I walked past it as it was busy sunning itself on a tree-stump...but the HOLY GRAIL of lizards to spot here in the UK would be the sand lizard. Pretty sure they're only found on the south coast, and you sound like a southerner so... x)

I have found one at a camp in megernie Scotland. I am not certain but I think is wasn't a newt or something like that because it had a thin tail. I have not done the research so please correct me if I'm wrong. It was a dark green colour and was about as long as an adults finger from head to tail

Keep pupae very very very slightly damp, or they will dehydrate, and give them at least an inch of peat to bury into, they pupate under the soil, unlike in the video - sorry!
@beenjamin594
@beenjamin594 8 лет назад
the moth should emerge when it goes dark blue/blackish, so if it goes that colour don't worry😊
@leopardgeckotalk
@leopardgeckotalk 8 лет назад
+Beenjamin Bingham doesn't that depend on what pattern will be on its wings? for example painted butterflies will show up red, with black spots, because you can see its wings through the chrysalis.

I did that once as a kid because I had it as a caterpillar and watched it do everything and finally hatch out because I was worried it would die and the moth ended up having a gimpy wing but it was so friendly...it would just sit on me happily and it lived for quite a while as I remember and my friends thought it was amazing that I actually hatched my own from a caterpillar (back before kits were a thing and I just did it straight from nature)
