The Elephant turn is an excellent technique for turning an adventure motorcycle around in tight spots. Practice for the elephant turn can be fun and rewarding whether you are training for competition or just want to improve off-road skills.
Adventure bikes can take you many places but there are limits due to their size. Having a full skill set of recovery techniques allows the rider to go further and explore more.
Here we demonstrate the steps involved for both standing and sitting elephant turn for beginner motorcycle riders and experienced alike.

These agility & skills courses/exercises are designed to help develop the fundamental riding skills of clutch, throttle, brake and active balance by the rider.
Precise practice in coordinating these techniques can lead to instinctive/reflexive actions by the rider and allow for more precise control of the motorcycle.
Mastery of these techniques allows the rider to more smoothly transition the bike when cornering as well as being able to react reflexively when encountering unexpected changes in surface traction in off road conditions.
Depending on your skill level, you may want to make the courses larger to feel more comfortable while you develop these skills.
Performing these exercises carries a risk of dropping your motorcycle which may result in damage to you or your motorcycle. Always be sure that your bike has the proper crash guards and that you also wear the appropriate protective gear.

I was struggling. Bike felt too heavy when tilted and with throttle., I could not hold it. Then I watched carefully your video and seen that the handlebar is to be fully locked and to look into the right direction. And suddenly is was so much easier. Thanks, man!

Good and very informative... Maybe to also advise for starter ..do it with a friend and beach with sand for a beginner ... the GS seems to be less heavier versus a GSA with all 3 boxes that could add weight and increase counter balance when needed....so start with a less weight for beginners too

What about with the front brake lever pulled in while I am practicing it on my cb919 hornet? I thought that way only the rear wheel will slide out and that's what I would like to see when I practice it.. what would you reckon? Don't have an adventure bike but seems a good maneuver when it's too tight for a normal u turn.

Very good instruction. I've wanted to learn to do this turn. You break it down into steps that gives me more confidence to try it. My Africa Twin Adventure Sports is DCT, so I'm a little more worried about losing control but I'll just work up to it slowly, in small steps. And maybe I can use the left-hand parking brake to help with control. Thanks! You've got a new subscriber!

I do not have any experience with clutch-less motorcycles, but your idea of using the parking brake sounds correct. Having a finger or two covering that left lever will allow you to grab it quickly if you need to.
@advmotoskillz

Once you get a feel for leaning the bike and breaking rear tire traction a few times (in a controlled manner) your confidence in understanding how the bike responds will help with making the next step easier.

Great video, unfortunately sometimes you can not use this technique (lack of space, roots, drop,...) any other technique to turn around?
@advmotoskillz
@advmotoskillz 3 года назад
Many times, I have found myself in that situation. 😅 I would say, it’s important to be comfortable dismounting the bike from either side and then being able to walk around the bike supporting it with both hands so that you can be in a better situation to then try and walk the bike out. This could involve backing the bike straight out until a wider spot for U turn or using the friction zone to rock the bike up and down a slight edge to get momentum to be able to turn bike around. See 4 ways to get unstuck video here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HWXwB841qRM.html

Love how the guy hot foot dances to stay with it. Unless you have the footwork to do as he does, this will not end well.

Foot dabs are a an underappreciated skill for sure. There is is much more to steering a bike than just turning the handlebars. If you are foot dab fan, then check out our IG post here instagram.com/p/CNfH3rLhaye/?igshid=1os5hgexekyfw Thanks for watching

Can you make an elephant turn on abs enabled bikes?
@advmotoskillz
@advmotoskillz 3 года назад
ABS and Traction Control are both known as "rider aids". In the case of elephant turn, the most important aid to disengage is the traction control so there is full ability to spin rear tire. ABS is not a critical factor for this.

are these to be done only counter clockwise? can you turn clockwise?
@advmotoskillz
@advmotoskillz 3 года назад
Great question. Yes, you can go clockwise as well. It is well worth practicing in both directions to be fully prepared for any unique off-road sitiuations.

hay que desactivar control de tracción, abs?...
@advmotoskillz
@advmotoskillz 3 года назад

Can you do this with a cruiser? Sure you can. Should you do this with a cruiser? Well, that depends on your skillz and your willingness to drop it...
