Elijah Craig Toasted Barrel Bourbon Review

The Mash and Drum

This is the review for the new Elijah Craig Toasted Barrel Bourbon which is fully matured Elijah Craig Small Batch Bourbon that is dumped and then re-entered at barrel proof into a second, custom toasted new oak barrel designed in partnership with Independent Stave Company. Made with 18-month air dried oak, the finishing barrel is first toasted and then flash-charred using a moderate toast temperature and toast time. An extensive research and development process resulted in a final barrel toast profile bringing forward dark sugar flavors within the wood to create a balance of smokiness and sweetness after months of finishing.
I also compare it to Woodford Double Oaked and Old Forester 1910.

Opened mine tonight. Watched while sipping. You are spot on. This is more a mood bourbon. The 1910 and WDO are more a relaxing sipper. The EC TB is more a let's relax and then go party style bourbon. I actually like the dryness and spice on the finish. Wish it lasted longer. Thx for the review! Cheers.

Went in search of Evan Williams Single Barrel as it is soon to be a Kentucky-only release, and hit a couple of the joints that aren't big box stores. Didn't find the Evan, but I did FINALLY find the Elijah Craig Toasted Barrel for $60. I was undecided until I decided to check your review again and give it a shot. Thanks, Jason.

OF 1910 and WR DO are both winners and depending on what mood you are they are different and delicious. If I would compare it to coffee, OF 1910 is dark roast American coffee with just a little sugar and WR is espresso with milk and sugar, what us Cubans call cafe con leche, light and sweet. Great review as always Jason! Cheers!🤙

I'm having my first right now, and tend to agree. I've only been at this for a little while, so my nose basically just still picks out vanilla, alcohol and brown sugar from pretty much everything. But I really haven't noticed this as being superior to regular EC Small Batch. In fact, I prefer SB, price aside. And since we're talking about the same proof and the $64 price tag this Toasted Barrel had (in Des Moines), I would have to draw a hackneyed - but often accurate - conclusion that it's good, but you can find something you'll enjoy more for half the price. We'll see what I think the next time I open it, likely when visiting my brother in late October.

The first time I did all 3 side-by-side, the EC came in second place (1910 was first). Some months later, I just did all 3 again and the EC dropped to third. Mainly I think I've gained more appreciation for the Woodford. The 1910 is by far my favorite though. In fact, it is my favorite re-barreled dram that I've had, and even my favorite of the Whiskey Row series.

Woodford Double Oak and OF 1910 are both readily available on the shelf at almost any store for a similar price. Ya'all haven't lived untill you've tried Wyoming Whiskey Inc's Small Batch Bourbon out of Kirby, WY. First of all, they use crystal clear water from a high pressure artesian well who's water hasn't seen the light of day for six thousand years. Every barrel is aged a minimum of 5 years, you can pay more for private reserve aged longer, and it has the most amazing finish with excellent caramel notes. Best tasting high alcohol bourbon I've ever tasted. You can also buy wood chips from their barrels for the perfect smoke in your grill. 👍 You're welcome. 👊

I love barrel proof bourbon as it is 'bourbon as God intended.' However I have been disappointed with ECPB offerings as I have found that EC usually drinks hot and fruity and spicy whereas I prefer bourbon the be sweet and caramely and vanillay and butterscotchy. 94 proof EC was the first bourbon in my early whiskey days to make me say, "Oh shit, bourbon is what I like." I do like oakey bourbon, so I have been very excited to see how this EC toasted barrel tastes.

How can it be called Bourbon but not be finished in new charred oak? Woodford double oaked makes sense but is toasting enough to keep the bourbon designation?
@TheMashandDrum
@TheMashandDrum 4 года назад
Well remember it's already fully matured in new American oak. Then transfered to a new toasted and flash charred barrel that was crafted specifically for this bourbon. So in that sense it's a bourbon. Brands do far more with bourbon that is still able to call it bourbon with finishing.
@whiskycentral
@whiskycentral 4 года назад
@@TheMashandDrum okay! Gotcha! Yeah I was curious. So because it's not aging, it's finishing. Then it's still legally a bourbon? So if you had a 10yr bourbon and finished it for a year in a port wine cask, to still be called a bourbon they need to have the age statement at 10yrs?

I don't think anything allocated can take on something that is high quality and always available everywhere.

I was offered $89 last week. I said no thank you. I will take one for each 1910 and 1920 while they are on sale.

@@TheMashandDrum I just picked up the EC toasted barrel. I really enjoy it. I haven't had the 1910 yet. With similar profiles I'm thinking the double oaked is best as I can get it the cheapest at $42
