You'd be surprised at how often newborns pee vs. toddlers. Learn how often babies need to go to the bathroom (so you can potty your baby, as early as birth, too). Get my FREE Easy Start Guide godiaperfree.com/easy-start-guide
This is so awesome. You are so great Andrea. I love how passionate and knowledable you are about this. Im getting your book to read and Im just starting EC with my 11 month old boy. I totally agree about boredom +boys alone at home + naked = peeing every 15 minutes everywhere!!!! I have learnt so much the last few days. Cant wait to get some good catches!
My 5mo wakes up dry most of the days. She sleeps up to 12h. Then there are 3 big pee within 50 ish minutes. Showtimes sure will wake up a bit wet and from my observations that usually happens about two hrs before waking. And true, if I don't offer potty, she will go to toilet, which is reassuring she doesn't hold for too long!
That is great! And wonderful that you know her current rhythms. Peeing 3 times within an hour after waking is totally normal and good to know that this is normal...because otherwise it might be a little surprising/confusing. :) Glad it's going well! And yes, babies don't hold it too long...if it hurts (visceral pain, not injury pain, like having to poop and feeling achy), they release! Into diaper or toilet.
Hey Sharhonda! Yes, she can. But it will look slightly different than what some underinformed people think potty training should look like. For example, my first son was out of diapers at 9 months old, telling me every time at 17 months old, but only pooped his diaper backup (when we had one on him) during the week at around 6 months when he learned to crawl. I call that potty trained. At 9 months old. My 2nd was out of diapers at 13 months and told us every time by 15 months. But at 13 months (1 month shy of 1 yr old!), she was what I consider to be potty trained. It IS totally possible if you're equipped. Get my book on EC - godiaperfree.com/thebook - and start today. And remember that half the world's babies are toilet independent at 1 year of age (during the day hours)...and that means your baby is capable. You just need to be informed and teach her. Having a deadline could be a great thing for your both! :) Best of luck. xx Andrea
Thank you for this. My 5 month old will p on the floor right after I've tried to potty her and then I'll see that she gone so I will try again and she won't go but she'll pee on the floor. I'm going to make sure that I almost always have a backup on her now. She also has been on a potty pause so I am still trying to figure that out . We went from being daytime diaperless and excited to wear training underwear at 6 months to only catching one a day or less. can't wait to buy your book!
It is a good idea to use a back up when baby is going through potty resistance. It is fairly common at her age. The book (and online support group that comes with it) will really help you work through this stage.
Hi. Andrea! I've tried training my 2 yr old multiple times. 1.When she was 13 months - she used to pee every ten minutes (even though she was clothed ) 3 times and then again after an hour same process would happen. and this went on for 7 days. I got tired of the number times I had to clean and decided to train her later. 2. When she was 23 months - she was trained and would pee every hour when I took her to the toilet. Then she stopped telling me that she needed to pee/poop and outright refused to sit on the potty.
That's a pretty common experience actually when you are using timing (eg. every hour) to use the potty. After a while the child starts to resist because they don't need to pee that often! And generally are ready to take on more of the responsibility themselves👍 Check out my Free 3-Day Primer for Starting Potty Training here 👉 godiaperfree.com/starting-potty-training/ And you'll be diaper-free before you know it. ❤️ 😃
Thank you for all the info. Coming from diapering my first I’m trying to understand this new concept. So if a baby pees every 5-15 minutes how does a caregiver do anything other than put their child on a potty? Is it possible to get any rest or cleaning or any person time? I’m concerned that I don’t have this kind of focus and energy needed to make this successful. It feels overwhelming.
So newborns might pee that frequently, however as your child ages, and especially as they develop an awareness of their need to pee, and that you will help with that... they will start to hold pee longer. When you start observation with YOUR baby you will see their unique timing, which in general would be that they need to pee around when they eat, a few minutes after that, a little while after that, then a longer stretch.... Also, no one catches ALL the pee. You do what you can 😉
Can i have some advice please, my 3 year old has been completely out of nappies since 22 months, we are having no luck at night and its heen over a year, day tkme shes perfect for expressing her need for the toilet, she still doesnt wear a nappy to bed but the constant bedding changing in the night is exhausting
Night training can be tiring, especially if your little one keeps wetting the bed. I am not sure everything you have done, but start back with the basics. Limiting water an hour or two before bed. Talk to her about what she should do if she needs to go potty in the middle of the night. A reminder right before she sleeps is ideal, and have a station set up so she can take herself to the potty.
My 10mo does not poop in a predictable once a day kind of pattern; firmness and timing seem to change, which makes it a bit challenging. His signals are pretty clear (grunting, facial expression), although nowadays he's experimenting with making very similar noises just for the heck of it. Any tips for a baby who isn't super regular in terms of a BM schedule?
Yep! Hypervigilance if it's been a while. :) And if he signals, calmly say "wait" and transport him to the potty, saying what you'll want him to eventually say as his spoken signal in the future. :)
Thanks! I find it challenging when he signals for a good half an hour or more (when he's a bit firmer), because sitting him on the potty for that long is impractical, and it makes the catch a bit harder! Lately he seems either to be doing that or going quite quietly. Anyway, catching pee has been going well, and hopefully we can get back into the swing of poos - I felt like he was really getting the idea that potty is for pushing before we fell off track a little, but then he's also been really focused on pulling up on things and standing lately, so maybe his mind is on other things!
I'm trying to hang in there, but am feeling super frustrated lately, because I can be vigilant for hours - literally getting nothing else done, because he'll be signalling on and off for several hours, and then in the two seconds I am trying to do something at the same time he'll finally push out a poo with no additional signal, and without waiting. Maybe I'm doing things wrong, but he hasn't started doing any kind of consistent signal, or waiting to sit, and I can attempt to put him on the potty 10 times in 3 hours right when he's clearly signalling that he's trying and he'll still manage to finally get it out at some other time. It feels like it should be easier than this!! He signals and signals and I watch and wait and still we just aren't managing to catch anything more than the after nap pees and such most of the time.
+Alexis Garland Alexis that sounds like he wants PRIVACY! Once you're not paying attention he goes. I suggest closing the door, turning your back, busying yourself with something else (ignoring him) in the bathroom. Even a blank or to play with and hide under. Anything!!
Yes!!! my boy is focussing on pulling up and cruising and really changing in this area and I am finding he is almost seems to try and avoid pooping with me around or if i try pput him on potty...
Hi Andrea, you know my baby is almost 7 months old and he pees every 10 to 15 min and sometimes less and in the morning his diaper is veeeeeery wet, never is dry, is that normal?? Or I should talk to the pediatrician??? He is only breastfeed and starting blw. The pees are some time just a little and some tome I little bit more, but almost never is a loooot maybe when he wake up... But definitely he doesn't hold it for 40 min
Hey there, it sounds like he is not fully releasing when you are taking your little one to the potty. Make sure that your little one is relaxed enough to release fully. 💕
Absolutely! It's a great age to start. And yes, you can do EC when you are together. That is part time EC and it is very effective. Babies learn who offers the potty and who doesn't, so it's fine if daycare can't/won't do any EC. Grab my Easy Start Guide and dive in! godiaperfree.com/easy-start-guide/
The place to start is learning your baby's signals and timing through observation. This video should help you. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uW334iTAOTI.html
Hello dear Andrea, so I have started elimination communication today. But my daughter is 7 months. Would it still function or it's too late for her? And the next question how long should I hold her on toilet until she makes her first pee on toilet. I mean 10 minutes or more? Thanks in advance 🤗
7 months is a great time to start EC! I would recommend you check out my free easy-start guide to learn more get.godiaperfree.com/optin-512296061634243736019
You need to hold baby supported until they are able to sit independently. This article on my website will give you some ideas on how to hold. godiaperfree.com/how-to-hold-a-newborn-baby-over-the-potty/
My six month old is peeing so much i feel like I’m not catching everything. Plus she’s moving screaming and talking so much i can’t figure out cues it’s like they don’t exist I’ve even tried observation it’s like she’s not giving any
6 months is major transition time! 😮 I would recommend doing some more "naked observation" to see if you can discern anything new. With adding solid foods, moving around more, possibly teething too... there is a lot going on right now! @@AndreaOlson you said every 30 min for a 6 month old.. i did diaper free almost this whole week .. ill catch some sit her there for a while then when i take her off five min later she will pee again and usually no signals... its like shes peeing every 15 min.. she will be 7 months in a few days.. i feel like im failing this and ive been doing it since shes been 1 montn im frustrrated
Every baby has a different natural timing. They do however go quite frequently since they are on a liquid diet. As baby grows, so does their bladder. He will start to hold longer.
As long as she is hydrated and comfortable, there is nothing to worry about. If you feel like she is waiting for you to offer the potty, you can try offering more frequently. Some kids are camels though and can go a long time between pees.
One more thing about her. She sweat a lot during the night it literally soak her bed. She doesn't show any distress. She's happy and hyper. How,much water should I give her she's just 7 months. Thank you again.
Hi Andrea! I'm so proud of the latest video on my channel which is all about my experience with EC. I'd love to get your feedback on it if you're interested in checking it out... I do reference you and the things I learned from your channel in the video :) Let me know if you'd be interested in doing a collaboration with me someday. As you'll be able to see in my video, I'm very passionate about the topic myself!
They poop between sleep cycles, but that is possible. With #eliminationcommunication you could try getting him on the potty in the nighttime to prevent him sleeping in it 😮
As long as baby is feeding well and peeing more often throughout the day (not dehydrated), it is fine. It just means that he/she is sleeping really well at night.
