Is Deep core mining Void Opals still worth it in 2024? No. As you will see in this video. It wasn't my plan to seek Void Opals specifically, I was just wanting to do more deep core mining. I tried for a previous hour to search for Painite in the last area I was in. I used up 66 prospector limpets and found NO ore. So I came to this system LTT 4487, and found a void opal hotspot.
It wasn't super easy to find Void Opal core asteroids, but I did fine and mine two. One wasn't at optimal detonation yield, and the other was.
I was tricked by the estimate of the cargo value, and continued to mine void opals, but when I went to sell them, they were only worth 65k per tonne...
I thought this was a poor price (galactic average is meant to be 135K credits...). I moved to Solati as I thought that would give a better price, but ended up going to the wrong installation, and selling for a paltry 4000 Cr per tonne... Talk about a wasted expedition.
I did a bit of external camera work whilst waiting for my collection limpets to scoop up all the void opals. Gave me something to do :)
Money-wise, it's not time efficient to do this activity, especially on this ore type. It might be worth it for the more rarer or expensive ores or ones that are more in demand. It is still an entertaining and chill activity to do though. Can be frustrating if you don't find anything for hours though.
Still, I learned a few things. I'm still confused why it kept reporting that the prospector limpets failed (even though they clearly do not...).
Anway, I hope you find the video informative, or at least, entertaining :)

When you were blowing up your first find, you had it in the optimal zone, but then proceeded to overcharge the rock, leaving you with way less profit. Also if you overdo it, you can go into contacts and disarm one or two

Void opals can be sold above 600k each ton. But you need to travel further.

The limpet thing is the oldest prospector being erased when you launch a new one You can look up prices on 3rd party apps like inara, or miners tool , sorry I cant post links here lol > Just watch how old the order is and the demand, if its older than like a day then unless it has a high demand the price will be much lower. looks like there is stations that are/were paying 750k for m=Monazite - just keep an eye on the date lol o7

Ahh! That makes more sense. It was very annoying to me, and felt like it was a bug. Another undocumented feature, thanks, makes more sense now. I thought I was doing something wrong!
