As a sufferer of Depression while listening to one of my favorite songs (Empty Garden), It helps me to fight it and try to bounce back again. Open the door and go outside and realize the day isn't that bad after all.
Oh man, I really miss John. Ain’t it funny how for a person who lived and died many years before my birth can still have such a profound impact on me. People like that never truly die, they live on in our hearts and minds💔
My son Patrick John passed on sept 12 th it ll be 4 years feel like i m walking through some surreal nightmare He was a drummer , my little drummer boy used to decorate my Christmas tree with lil drums I made He loved this song till we meet again my boy
It's not fair that we don't realize at time what the music will mean to us later. I'm so very sorry for your loss. I pray you can one day listen to this song without pain and heartbreak. God bless you and be with you. Sending you warmth and hugs through the net from one mother to the other. ❤️
Are you "FUCKING" kidding!!!This is an "OBSCURE" song that no one even "FUCKING" knows.ALBEIT it is a "WONDERFUL" song!BUT have "YOU" HEARD ANY OF his OTHERS???AND THIS his"VERY BEST SONG"?WHat "ROCK" DID YOU JUST CRAWL OUT FROM UNDER?JOE MCCLURE I am a "RARITY" to "LOVE THIS SONG>BUT I AM a "ELTON JOHN" ELITIST!Like I KNOW EVERYTHING HES EVEr "FUCKING" DONE.AND this is a "GOOD" rare peice but the "FUCKING" very best hes ever done.?.?AS "GORDAN RAMESY" would say,Come on "MAN",Get "FUCKING" BACK TO REALITY!!!!
I'm sure you're a very nice person but I'm sorry to say what I comes to this song you missed the beat big time on this one first of all do you know who is written for.? Elton John wrote this in memory of John Lennon. they were very close and Elton took it very very hard. So he wrote this song for himand he plays it every year every since John Lennon died .mr. Lennon has been coined as having the biggest standing ovation from a crowd of any music legend in history when he did a performance at Madison square garden where you'll go and he got back together I know John was president of course. Thank goodness some people did have technology to record this and again it was the biggest loudest ovation any musical persona has ever received. If you listen to the song in this context with a close friendship between the two you will understand more and it is very much not amusing nor does it amuse meeting
Reuben Seldo, actually Elton wrote it with Bernie, so we don’t know who actually wrote that line. And people either don’t know or don’t give enough credit to Elton for being a fantastic arranger and lyricist himself. His catalogue speaks for itself.
I remember the morning my dad woke me up to tell me to come watch the news. He knew that I loved the Beatles. I saw my dad get choked up 5 times, Kennedy, King, Kennedy, my brother passing, and John. He couldn't tell me himself. He had to let me see the news on TV. He didn't like all of his music but loved Imagine. My dad was a Vietnam veteran. He was also a libertarian. He respected John and his stance against war.
I have always loved this song and I know that for many of you out there losing a beloved pet can be as devastating as losing a human being. We just lost our beloved pig, and our hearts are broken every time we walk by his empty hut. Just like Wilbur from Charlotte's web, he was remarkable stupendous and extraordinary. He was humorous and a real spitfire. Empty Garden is a beautiful song and really speaks to the emptiness and profound sadness that we all feel when losing a loved one, no matter human or animal.
I've been more devastated by the loss of my various cats and dogs than I have ever been for people who I loved, including my parents who I loved dearly. People who never loved an animal cannot understand. It's the worst loss one can suffer.
@@ChronicBrat Thank you!! And hugs right back--we animal lovers understand the beauty and souls of our wonderful 4-legged children who love unconditionally. And I am sorry for your loss. But I know that like us, you've got lots of great memories and humorous stories to share about him .🐕🐷
What a sad story.. Yet such a moving tribute to one of the greatest song writers in the modern world. I have to concur with the fact that line about how much damage one insect can do is precious... Being a gardener of sorts myself. This song makes me cry.. Can't you come out to play.... He was taken away too soon
Angel Touched I lost my son and I find that music can be so comforting yet painful at the same time my heart and prayers go out to you big sister and your family
I remember being a little boy of 12 years old ,doing my homework on the living room floor next a beautiful Christmas tree that my Mom had decorated. I was looking up at the tree and thinking that my life was so good. All of a sudden the news flash was on the Television saying " John Lennon has been shot and killed in front of the apartment building he lived in". I was horrified...My brother turned me into a fan of the Beatles and John's solo music as well by playing it all the time. This song is just Wonderful. Thank you, Sir Elton John, I'm sure John loves it too.
Your post hit home. I was 10 years old, and just like you, was laying on the living room for next to the Christmas tree when the terrible news interrupted our program. We were just devastated. I’ll never forget it. It’s heartbreaking still, after nearly 40 years. ✌🏽
That is indeed a very vivid memory:((. I had turned 19 in early October, I don't remember exactly what I was doing, but I do remember the feeling of shock and such sadness:((
Shawn, é muito parecida sua história, foi na época de Natal. Eu tinha 9 anos. Mas escutei na rádio a notícia da morte de John Lennon. Sou de Manaus/Amazonas - Brasil.
I never heard it on the radio. I'm reading Elton's book "Me" and he mentions this song that he wrote for Lennon, but he only performed it 3 times live because it's too difficult emotionally for him to sing. He was good friends with Johnny.
I feel your pain. My brother passed away unexpectedly on November 26, 2018. He was only 57. I cry every day for him. Try to think of the happy times! They are in heaven.
@@11Garrett11 this song gloriously reflects on the loneliness Elton felt about the loss of his friend...John Lennon. We all still wonder why this had to happen...The loss of John....
Thank you Bernie for the lyrics. Elton seldom sings this in concert as it it understandably sad for him. Elton you were brilliant in Sydney on 7th March this year before the madness took over. Take care.
Is this the perfect tribute to one of the most influential people in the history of Rock & Roll music!!! I commend (for whatever that's worth) the song writing capabilities of Bernie Toupin & Elton John. The perfection of the delivery by John is devine. Nothing short of a Masterpiece!!!
My all-time F.A.V.O.R.T.E. Elton John song is "Someone Saved my Life Tonight"!! While "Empty Garden" is my second all-time favourite Elton John song!!! 💞💕💖💕💞
I’m so sorry about Patrick and wish I had better words to bring you some comfort. I lost the love of my life some 13 years ago and I still think about her every day.
when my dad told me about this song, I knew this was my favorite song ever. what kind of monster would kill innocent man walking his dog with his wife. we all love remember John Lennon. rest in peace my hero. 😢 💚💜 ❤️
A far bigger tear jerker then candle in the wind . Elton knew John. So you can hear his soul sing it . If I was a Royal I’d prefer this song at my funeral. Then Candle in the wind
I been looking for my love Dawn Anderson since around 79 only to find out just November , she was murdered in 1992 , I sing to her everyday , this is one of the songs , I change Jonny to darling , not to be rude to the great John lennon , theres a big hole in my gut that can't be filled
I didn't know, now I made a tribute to my lover who just die six months ago something I never expected, his son donated his body to a university in Costa Rica, did not let me take care of his body, it is verry hard for me to get over it, I visit the university every day to pretend I'm visiting him at the cementery, wish I could have his body back.
I was 16 when he died. I still remember that day so well, when I heard. I remember a few days later every radio station on the globe went silent for ten minutes in memory of John. Me and my siblings sat in my room in silence. I had never seen my older brother cry before.
wow i completely forgot this comment. i didnt know i was aware of this songs existance when 16. how quickly life passes lol. thanks for everybody who replied or liked. its crazy how music can unite so many people. it always makes me a bit emotional 🥲
Well, here is a thing. A lifelong Lennon and Elton fan here who only just found out about this song in an Elton interview held with him by Sean Ono Lennon (It is on BBC Sounds in the UK if you want to hear it). As a result, here I am and on the edge of tears all over again. Not Elton's best but definitely one of his most heartfelt and a lovely tribute to one of my earliest heroes. Elton says the only time he played it live was in Vegas as he gets too emotional when he sings it.
I believe we can all relate to someone who tends to a garden with Love in mind, and yes it takes ONE INSECT, A DESTROYER, TO RUIN ALL THE LOVE YOU PUT INTO THE GARDEN OF LOVE...
When French president Mitterand allowed just about any organisation to open a 'free radio' after being elected (1982) - we only had four national french radios before that - hundreds opened and I applied and had a program for a year in a local, Bordeaux one. In December 83, I played this song to mark the third birthday of John's murder. Tried not to cry on air, and it was difficult because this song is so beautiful in a heart-wrenching way ...
Elton: Johnny, can't you come out to play in your empty garden? Johnny's replies: 1. Sure, but we'll have to be at least six feet away from each other. 2. Sure. Let me put my mask on. 3. Sorry, but I'm supposed to stay inside.
Absolutely a stunningly beautiful tribute to Lennon from long time friends Taupin and Elton. Having said that, I do believe Lennon's best work was behind him at the time of his death. It was the same as George Harrison. From the time Lennon was murdered to the time Harrison died of cancer, George only had one more hit single and with it a fairly decent album. I personally can't see how Lennon would have had the drive and determination to keep up with the longevity and success that McCartney had and still has. McCartney is and was a workaholic and Lennon and Harrison, in their own way, weren't.
I've had a privilege of knowing only a few Johnny's my stepdad name is John Manuael, became 1 of my look up 2s. Love you Uncle thanx for teaching me a few lift skills, sorry if not utilising them right now. I need of our soulful heart to hearts we wud have it's been awhile...Uncle ❤️💯🙏
That night, I was taking a nap. I had a dream where the scene was a rainy NYC street. There was a guy lying on the pavement and another guy standing over him. A bystander said to the guy, "Do you know what you've done?!" I woke up and turned on the TV. They broke into whatever show to say that JL had been shot. Days later, I heard on the news that someone who had witnessed the murder had said to Hinckley, "Do you know what you just did?!" I live about 60 blocks south of the Dakota--and I saw the whole thing.
What happened here As the New York sunset disappeared I found an empty garden among the flagstones there Who lived here He must have been a gardener that cared a lot Who weeded out the tears and grew a good crop And now it all looks strange It's funny how one insect can damage so much grain And what's it for This little empty garden by the brownstone door And in the cracks along the sidewalk nothing grows no more Who lived here He must have been a gardener that cared a lot Who weeded out the tears and grew a good crop And we are so amazed, we're crippled and we're dazed A gardener like that one, no one can replace And I've been knocking But no one answers And I've been knocking Most all the day Oh, and I've been calling Oh, hey hey Johnny Can't you come out to play And through their tears Some say he farmed his best in younger years But he'd have said that roots grow stronger if only he could hear Who lived there He must have been a gardener that cared a lot Who weeded out the tears and grew a good crop Now we pray for rain and with every drop that falls We hear, we hear your name And I've been knocking But no one answers And I've been knocking Most all the day Oh, and I've been calling Oh, hey hey Johnny Can't you come out to play And I've been knocking But no one answers And I've been knocking Most all the day Oh, and I've been calling Oh, hey hey Johnny Can't you come out, can't you come out to play Johnny, can't you come out to play in your empty garden Johnny, can't you come out to play in your empty garden Johnny, can't you come out to play in your empty garden
Such a beautiful song. Of course, it's about John Lennon. And, I always think......if he had stayed in England, I bet he would still be alive because they don't have such stupid gun "rights" like we have here. I have read that Elton rarely plays this live because he can barely make it through it, it tears him up.
A música é um tributo em homenagem à morte do Beatle John Lennon, assassinado no dia 8 de dezembro de 1980, por um fã obcecado por sua vida, na frente do edifício Dakota, prédio onde morava em Nova York.
The Heir of Slytherin || No, "...he must have been a gardener that cared a lot, weeded out the tares and grew a good crop, and now it all looks strange. Funny how one insect can damage so much grain." It harkens to the Tares & wheat parable. It's an allegory and the words are symbolic. One person (insect), the killer, can do so much damage. Bernie Taupin was clever with his lyrics like that. It's about everyone's pain, but mostly Elton's as he and Lennon were friends. YJGS
I've listened to that line quite a few times after reading your comment. Elton definitely says 'tears'. If he meant to say 'tares', he mispronounced it.
