Even among the huge amount of great songs he's done, this is true Elton's "Magnum Opus."

IMHO, the GREATEST intro to an album EVER!! Elton John, Bernie Taupin and the Elton John Band ... UNBELIEVABLE piece of music. Loved it back in the day, and still LOVE IT!!

I am a big metal fan but an older guy and I cry when I think of the great songs of the seventies. This one and recent Who song, Love Reign over me, I listened to countless times as a young man. Elton John is a genius. Few artists like him in the world. I remember buying Good Bye Yellow Brick Road. It is a kind of sad that many young people do not know this song. Thank you for bringing to life today. It was special.

I saw Elton John during the tour back in the early 70s and this was played during the concert. As a young college student, this gave me goosebumps hearing it the first time. I still get goosebumps when I hear the opening...

I saw Elton for the first time about 1982 in San Diego. Even then....this was my favorite Elton John song. So the concert started.....dark stage....and the famous grave yard chimes started and the wind sound effect stared.......sent chills down my spine and the crowd cheered like crazy as he came out and he began playing. Talk about an audio orgasm!!!!

This is one of those songs I'll always stop and listen to until it finishes.

1974 Nassau Coliseum a 16yr old me at his first Elton John concert and he opens with FFaF/LLB in a silver wizard outfit. At 18yrs old 6 hours on line at Sam Goody's record store in NYC to get his autograph, got it. Greatest album of all time GYBR, greatest artist of all time. 30+ times I have seen him live, even a solo show with Ray Cooper at the Palladium NYC. So sad that your ears have been deprived this beautiful noise for all this time. May it bring you the joy that it has and still does to me. E J forever. When I was in high school in the late 70’s a friend was in a car accident. About a month after he died a few of us went to visit his grave. We had not been listening to the radio. When we got back in the car this song started playing

A beautiful, awesome epic and majestic rock ballad by geniuses Sir Elton John and Bernie Taupin, and this amazing band. Every instrument contributes so perfectly, love the super powerful guitar playing. A classic first place rock ballad.

Picture yourself back in high school being awoken by this pumping out of you clock radio. I was scared at first but listened to the whole thing and I loved it. Slipped on my wide bell bottom pants and cropped t-shirt while still listening to it before heading out to deliver newspapers. Had to make money to buy albums and bell-bottoms which my Mom refused to buy. Fond memories to be sure. I'm sending Kel an instant Karma of healing vibes. 💓

I'm glad they played the original version of this song and not some recent live performance of it. Elton's early songs are best heard in the same time period they were released when Elton still had his original amazing voice. I was in my early teens when this album was released. What great memories this brings back!

My wife and I saw Elton John and Billy Joel in concert during their Piano Man Tour, at the old Tampa Stadium. I think it was about 1982, or so. We were so far back in the crowd that it was hard to see them clearly, but I'm glad we were there as we have always loved both of them. Actually, Billy Joel is one of my all time favorites, not just because of his singing, but also because of his incredible song writing, lyric writing and piano playing. They are both simply great musicians.

I think this is the true ultimate "epic" of Elton John, my favorite song by him along with Made In England

He's been my favorite singer since I was a kid last time I saw him was with Billy Joel he lives around 25 miles from my house in the Los Angeles area I will always be a huge fan of Elton so many good memories❤

First Happy Anniversary! Elton John is a treasure and this is a epic example of his greatness. It takes you on a fantastical journey and the musicianship of the band is phenomenal..

I saw Elton and his band in 1974 on the tour in support of this album. The band took the stage and the crowd was nuts in anticipation. Elton was dressed as outrageously as the photos suggest but his manner was very subdued and somber. They opened with this opus, slowly building through 11 minutes (as you note) to the rocking "Love Lies Bleeding." Ultra-tight band playing very well together. I was far too young (16) to consciously understand the juxtaposition of raw pain and jubilant rock as art imitating this brutal, beautiful life. Privileged to be introduced to live music of this quality.

Almost every song Elton sang/played, the lyrics were written by Bernie Taupin and Elton John wrote all the music. I really do appreciate you guys!!

I was listening to other things back in the day and I never paid attention to Elton John. Then my Husband surprised me by saying he loved the old Elton John ( when Elton first started with 1st several albums) so I listened with him. I don't remember this song. It's so good. When I received my degree in music, my friend and I played these songs at graduation. We put a band together after that and rode the wave. Great times.

"Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" is one of my five "desert island" albums. I'd recommend ANY song on it. However, one of the lesser known songs that I'd like to suggest is Have Mercy On The Criminal from "Don't Shoot Me I'm Only The Piano Player". The lyrics are a little dark, but the arrangement is fantastic.

Every time, I go back to the first time I heard this song. I paused it many times, to write down the cinematic ideas that were popping in my head! Imagine the film where this is the sound-track!

Bernie wrote the words, and Elton wrote the music around it. Elton is a master at that...

I saw Elton John on tour in San Antonio Tx -Summer of 73. -the my opened with this. -I was so blown away that I couldn’t speak -and I’m a piano player for about 60 years ....it was a life -altering moment for me and my friends with me. Incredible band members with Elton too. Still one of my favorite pieces of all time.

Something I didn't know until fairly recently is that Love Lies Bleeding is actually a droopy red plant. "During the Victorian era, specific flowers had different meanings. Love-lies-bleeding stood for hopeless love or hopelessness in the Victorian language of flowers." It was also popular in 18th century America and in England. When I learned that it kind of changed the meaning of the lyrics for me a bit.

I saw Elton play this at The Drury Lane theatre in London in April 1979. He must have been on stage alone entertaining us for over an hour before he started playing Funeral for a friend, then as it ramps up into Love Lies Bleeding the back of the stage opens up to reveal his drummer Ray Cooper. And then we got the second half of the concert, absolutely awesome professional ! He must have played every hit up to that point, a fair few album tracks, there was a cover of I heard it through the grapevine too. Just awesome. First concert I went to and just WOW!

I saw him in 1977 at London Wembley arena with 10cc as support act. He told the audience that he was going to end touring when this current tour was over, but we know that did not happened. It was an amazing show.

He was on fire and his band was right there with him! I got this album as a teenager and was fascinated, and this song(s?) was certainly a crown jewel of the whole thing. Amazing production. Everybody plays so expertly and plays to the song, and the songwriting does a great job of featuring all their talents. Tremendous accomplishment from some VERY talented (and, aside from EJ, largely unknown) musicians.

One of my first concerts. 1976 madison square garden. The show opened with the stage covered in fog. Elton came out dressed in a duck suit and opened with this song :)

I've watched a lot of reaction videos, and I want to tell you, yours is the best. I love watching Kel's reactions each time she hears a song for the first time. I think too many times we take these songs for granted. I'm glad she's being exposed to some great music. Better late than never, like they say.

Finally! I've been waiting for someone to react to this song. My all time favorite from the 70's, I saw him at Madison Square Garden during the Goodbye Yellow Brick Road tour. Another great pull Rich and Kel. This song is a monster anthem. The piano playing lit Kel's face up with joy backed by really strong guitar/bass lines. Last Valentine's day, 2019, twenty four other friends joined my wife and I in Minneapolis when Elton toured. He played this song and we shook as if we were outside in the cold. Man alive, the band played for close to three hours. I'd say the $247 ticket was well worth it!!

You are not worthy, Rich! ;-) Some of my best musical memories were from when I went to Art School in York PA, '73 to '77 and had a half hour commute each way with a close friend at the same school. His tiny green VW Bug had a great stereo, and we pushed it to the max each way, every day! We'd each bring a newly recorded Cassette and treat each other to our newest 'finds'. Best way to 'learn' music. My daughter is a blues singer in Nashville, and the leader of her own band. You can only imagine the 'bedtime music' I shared with her 'back in the day.' Winston Woof, First of His Name, Master of Stuffed Toys. Well played, indeed! ;-) My own Tink (wrongly named Tinkerbell, as he was the only short-haired male in a little of six, like his sister and mother), likes the name, but also likes 'Psychokiller', due to his absolute love of showing his worth in that regard. I have a drawer-full of squirrels' tails, and he's a full Ace with bats.....

In 1973 I got my first job at 15. My first paycheck, my first purchase, this album. When I got my first cd player once again the first album I bought was Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. My favorite cuts, Funeral for a Friend and Goodbye Norman Jean. :-) From a technical perspective it is musically a masterful piece of work. Changes in style, tempo, key and the dynamics, takes you on an incredible emotional journey.

Possibly his best song. Brilliant. Excellent classic album too.
