The Moody Blues (in my opinion) have the BEST first 7 ALBUMS in the history of popular music(except maybe the Beatles could be argued, although their first couple were certainly a product of the times-but still great, and Led Zeppelin). Each Moody's album is a journey. The first 4 are without a doubt mind shaping and truly innovative pieces of work. Their producer/engineer Tony Clarke is to the Moody blues, what George Martin was to the Beatles. I've listened to the Moody Blues all my life. And I can honestly say no band touches me more. I love Steely Dan, The Doors, The Beatles, Pink Floyd... But the Moody Blues are from another place altogether.

A Question of Balance and On the Threshold of a Dream are major albums imo. They lost one of their members by the mid 70s so the song looked at here has a different sound. It's ridiculous that of their earlier songs Nights in White Satin is the only one well known.

@@mikereiss4216 I'm aware. Sometimes I feel its just easier to phrase it that way. Its pretty much a new band at that point anyway with Justin and John joining and others leaving. I also enjoy Denny Laine with Paul and Linda McCartney in Wings. But yes technically you are right, I should have called it "the classic 7". I just want everyone to enjoy The Moody Blues!!

The Moody Blues is my absolute favourite band, they are a personal choice for me because they reach me where i live. I know the albums intimately, they are a part of my DNA. For me its brilliant to hear of people coming to their music, hearing and appreciating it. I feel its a shame to hear people say i don't have time, i'm too busy. For me the old cliche is still apposite, it goes thus, What is time if full of care i have no time to stand and stare.

You’re correct, but the band had a different lineup and direction,,,, Denny Lane sang lead (and later joined Wings) and there was no Justin Hayward... The “classic” lineup continued through the next 7 albums, after which Mike Pinder (keyboards/Mellotron) departed and was replaced by Patrick Moraz from Yes...

For me the great thing about these songs is they were like the sound track to my life in the 60's 70's and 80's. They were so open ended in their lyrics that they fit into whatever situation you were in. The radio was always on back then: at home in the car everywhere and whatever you where doing the songs just blended into you life. And sometimes the music and the moment in your life would sync up and it was magic. And especially when you were with someone who shared that moment. It was a magical time. Wordsworth said it best: “Bliss it was in that dawn to be alive. But to be young was very heaven.”

Kip Lambert, Hi Kip, don’t know how old you are but I mean no disrespect towards you but I’m old enough to easily remember watching the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show. So much of music before the mid nineties lyrics just didn’t matter (often expect singer songwriters) more power to you. We just put a vinyl on, dropped the needle, sat on the floor and just let the music take us wherever. I don’t think we could have done that if we were listening to the lyrics and often times, bands didn’t put the lyrics in the album cover and of course, no computers during Pink Floyd, Moody Blue’s era. Singer Songwriter’s, you wanted to know the lyrics and could usually make them out with ease. Keep on appreciating music and lyrics ~Peace ✌️

I bought and listened to all the Moody Blues albums over and over. Zeppelin, The Who, The Stones. I have had the privilege of listening to all in concert, my surround home system, and always in my car. Still crank them all up. Listening today to newer artists in addition. Matchbox 20, John Mayer, One Republic, Nora Jones, etc. Like what you have been playing. So much more available out there that are pinnacles of rock, etc.

I understand exactly what your saying Kel about missing all the good music. But not only that, when you hear the music in the context of the age it was written and it becomes part of the fabric of your becoming of age, make this music even more special. Not that hearing it now doesn't make it still great music, because just the musicality of it is amazing.

Everyone has that little voice inside them that tells them to act, and we as individuals tend to shut that little voice up. Time to act upon that little voice is now, in the present. It does no one any good to look to the future with open arms without living in the present, and the lessons we so sadly learn from our past are unchangeable.....so remember that golden rule.....be kind to others, listen to that still small voice and live life with no regrets. That is what this song means to me.

I am a 60's child and grew up on a lot of this music. Later on in life I was fortunate to see The Moody Blues in concert 3 times with my sister. Unfortunately she passed away 15 years ago. It is sometimes hard for me to listen to them without getting emotional. If I am not mistaken back in the 80's they ended their concerts with RIDE MY SEE SAW and I'M JUST A SINGER (in a rock n roll band) If she hasn't heard those two, do them.

This song, written by singer/guitarist Justin Hayward happened when The Moody Blues experienced another transition in their long career. It seems appropriate to me that The voice epitomises this new chapter with its “gusto” both lyrically and musically. Probably the most evident change is with the keyboard, injecting a new driving force to this and subsequent songs through the 1980s. May l suggest you listen to at least one song from 1967 , through to the late 1970s?...Have fun!

The group made 7 classic albums from 1967 to 1972 then did solo projects for a few years, reuniting for 1978's "Octave" album but they weren't the same. They lost that mystical aspect, the searching for answers. Increasingly they became more of a pop band writing love songs. I did get to see them in the '90s, they played all their classic hits with a couple of the newer ones.

The Moodys reinvention came when Decca asked them to produce an album with an orchestra to be used to promote their new stereo music system. They actually wrote the album 'Days of future past' which included Knights in white satin. They didn't use an orchestra they played all instruments themselves and made use of a meletron which simulated orchestral sounds. The album and the single from it 'nights in white satin' were big successes and launched the Moody's who went from strength to strength. A number of their following albums all had their own theme, A Question of Balance, For our Childrens, Childrens Children, In search of the lost chord and on the threshold of a dream. The Moody's were of my time and I have all of these albums on vinyl bought at the time. Still play them today together with all they have produced since including Night at Red Rock, live concert. I recommend you check some out, many available on RU-vid.

I have been a huge Moody Blues fan for countless years. Been to about 16 of their concerts over the years. The Voice is my favorite. I for one, will sit there and break a song down in my head and listen to the arrangement in the background. Almost be able to listen to it without words. Weird, I know. This is by far one of the most beautifully arranged songs that I think has ever been done!

I believe it is about fresh starts ... understand the voice within and feel the change, a right beginning..mm

I saw them for the first time about 5 years ago. They are still such a tight band and their voices are incredible.❤️

HAHAHA, Kel you are so funny. At first you didn't really like what you were seeing and hearing. It wasn't until you followed the music that you started to follow the lyrics. Then you took off and drop your barriers and heard the music for itself and the lyrics for the poetry that it is. Then you got it and enjoyed what you heard. :-) I just love it. I am so sorry that you don't have those rock n roll memories. But now you can catch up to the rest of us. Rock On Girl!!! :-)
