Hi, David! "Before Elvis, there was nothing." is a quote frequently attributed to John Lennon. As time has passed by, I've learnt how many other stars, in the business, payed respect to Elvis, both as an artist and a human being. I didn't know Sir Elton John was a hard core fan either...

I don't think Elvis really wanted to be remembered for his singing. I think he wanted to be remembered for his humanitarian contributions. That was what Elvis passion was and his singing was the means that gave him the opportunity to do this. Elvis was a great humanitarian. Helping people was in his soul. I think that is why he was given so much charisma, talent, looks, was because he helped with the money he made and bought things and gave things just to help people. This is why I am a fan. His generous nature. You hear everyone say, everyone needs to give, but the rich want you to give, they don't want to give their money away. But Elvis actually did give. Just my opinion. Thank you for sharing. R.I.P Elvis you are still so missed. ❤❤❤

I think Elvis Presley was ambitious. He wanted to be the best he could be as a singer a performer and an actor. He also wanted to make people happy by singing, performing and acting. Elvis Presley sacrified part of his artistic development, his physical health and his personal happiness on the altar of providing money to support all the people around him: manager, wife, daughter, family, friends, girlfriends and employees. Elvis Presley was too nice to stand up to Parker and others who were exploiting him for their own benefit and didn't give a damn about Elvis' artistic aspirations, his personal happiness and his physical well-being. I don't know if Elvis was not assertive enough or not confident enough to fight for his personal interests against all claimants, who wanted to profit from him. I read that Elvis avoided confrontations except when he got a bad temper. Were those outbursts caused by the fact that Elvis normally didn't manage to assert himself sufficiently towards certain persons? Elvis Presley liked money because he liked luxury and beautiful things (houses, cars, clothes, furniture, jewelry) and because it enabled him to financially help other people. Officially Tom Parker worked for Elvis but in reality it was the other way around. Elvis Presley worked for Tom Parker, who was nobody without Elvis but controlled Elvis' whole life. Vernon Presley never did anything to protect Elvis against the exploitative Parker. He should have. Gladys predicted that Elvis would dye at 40 when he would sign with Parker and she was right. Gladys deservedly didn't trust Parker.

It was said that Elvis was a searcher,,,, he was always searching throughout his life for where he fit in this life and what he was here for? Elvis's mum told him he was here on earth because he was special and God had plans for him,,, Elvis had a short life and never reached his full potential he had so much more to do and give,,, But boy did he pack a lot of himself and his talent into the life he had,,,he went from nothing to superstardom and touched the world with his music and love,, Elvis was the original superstar and a genuine man who loved and appreciated his fans and fellow human beings. Before Elvis there was nothing and since there has been nothing,,,,, Us Elvis fans will always love and cherish his memory and legacy,,,RIP ELVIS,,, from an Australian fan,,🇦🇺🌺💞🎵

Don't agree with the "nothing" part. There were great musicians before Elvis. Many were black, and Elvis was influenced big-time by their sound. I myself found a leather vest and shorts and had one for my sister (rest in peace) we wore them. He also influenced me. It is nice Elton John said those nice things about Elvis and other bands and solo artists. The Beatles when they came to America they said they were more popular than God. Read the book Destined to Die Young by Sally Hoedel, it really explains his life, family history and family medical history, his inherited illnesses, how ill he really was the last couple of years. He wasnt fat, he was puffy due to steriod medication. Any medical professional today can look at him last concert and see. I wish the fat jokes would stop and that he only a drug addict. He needed prescription drugs to survive daily. His poor eyes having glaucoma, that's why they watered so much, not tears or being high. I wish more people would read this book. It was greatly researched and not about sensationalism.

David reviewed that book when it came out and thought it was a joke. Just because Gladys' parents were first cousins means nothing. First cousins are no more likely to have children with genetic issues than the general population. Gladys Presley didn't even have an autopsy, her own doctor didn't know what actually killed her but Sally Hoedel claims she knows. The book is full of misinformation and wild guesses. Elvis died from the 14 drugs that were in his system along with a lifetime of bad habits.

@mebeme007 Месяц назад
As much as I truly love, admire and respect Elvis and agree with Elvis' medical history, I wouldn't be so naive as to deny he DID also have addictions to many things, legal AND illegal. And how much he DID overuse both. He first took the drugs because he wanted to. Then he took them because he needed to, simply because he had become a genuine addict. He needed uppers to get him up, motivated and moving throughout the day. Then needed downers to help himself relax after being so hyped up on stage and to also counteract the many uppers he took that would have otherwise kept him awake for days. And he DID have a love of food, especially food that is genuinely not very good to be eating all the time for so many years. Which legitimately added to his health problems. He grew up in the poor part of the South, where healthy eating was hardly an option. And when you've become accustomed to that kind of food, you're hardly going to start ignoring it and pick healthier options instead. Especially during a time when many people didn't know better about healthier food choices, and by the time those ideas came along, Elvis was already set in his ways and eating habits. He DID enjoy indulging himself, whether it be drugs or food. And everyone around him was simply too plain scared to say No to Elvis. They were only worried about themselves and losing their jobs, ultimately. That's the cold-hard truth of it all, as sad as it is. Though, I still admire and respect the heck out of him for all the good he did and for sharing his special talents with the world.

I had a chance to meet her in England and she took me to see the Elton's house (from the gate only). He gave her a signed picture for my Mom too which we had on our wall growing up. People blame Elvis for not writing some of his own songs. But his talent in singing, arranging the songs the way he wanted to sing them, his presence and showmanship was brilliant. Not everyone can write and do what he did too. Col. Parker did a lot for Elvis, but hurt him too in not accepting songs that people wrote for him. The Col. would get greedy in wanting half of publishing rights. I get sick of people throwing off on him . He had faults like everybody else, but was very good hearted and loved his fans. He put his charm on every song he sang for his fans and probably made the one who wrote it richer. When he started, black music was not being played to white audiences. He loved the blacks and kicked the door open for black music to be played to white audiences. Blacks put him down pretty much and he wanted to be their friends, but it was the white audience that fell in love with him and made him their king of rock. And the white audience were the ones that made the blacks famous when they started playing to white audiences. That generation was the ones that bought the records and went to the shows. Like it or not.

Well said, both of you. If it weren't for Elvis, it would have taken perhaps a lot longer for people to finally get to hear black peoples music and get to appreciate it also. It's sad that the respect and appreciation for Elvis can't go the same way. Though, it's mostly the younger generations that slag him off. The ones who truly never lived through things like the civil rights movement and so on. When it was people like MLK and Jesse Jackson Snr that actually liked and respected Elvis very much, and Elvis also contributed plenty of money to several civil rights movement projects. Elvis also cried and went into depression for a while when MLK was murdered. He couldn't understand the hate that was directed towards black people and so on. And yet, there are plenty of ignorant younger ones who are highly disrespectful towards Elvis, simply because they think it's somehow cool to accuse Elvis of all sorts of false, negative and nasty crap.

Thank-you David, this is my first time visiting you. I will say I so much enjoy your Narration and your point of view on kindness. ( goes without saying of course that I also have a great admiration for Elvis as a performer and a man who carried a heavy cross in life as many of us do with much grace ) I am slightly saddened when these little tales that include words such as jealousy, bias etc. come up when another is not on this earth no longer to defend themselves, it really serves no purpose for such people to bring a memory up that could have been completely misinterpreted to begin with. Some as we know seem to be making a living off such moments or tales. Having Elton John an extremely gifted musician, composer and singer share his deep regards for Elvis was heartfelt. Thank-you again.

Elton has or had one of the largest record collections on EARTH. He’s an expert on American Soul music all the way back into the fifties, forties and 1930’s. He grew up listening to Little Richard and Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee Lewis as well as Mississippi Delta Blues Artists. He has always been in love with American music.

I saw him In 76. It was my third time and my girlfriend who wasn’t a big fan. I told her how electric he was, and when he came on stage I was shocked by his appearance. We were third row center and he was white as a sheet, and so overweight. He was sweating profusely and the sweet inspirations carried his high notes. Sometimes he would look at them and smile. We left because I just couldn’t stand to watch him like that. I told my girlfriend that something is bad wrong with him, and i wouldn’t be surprised if he died. I remember the day he died the following year I was driving to work when the DJ broke into a song and with a trembling voice said “ ladies and gentlemen bad new from Memphis, Tennessee this morning. Elvis Aaron Presley , the king of rock and roll died this morning at his home in Memphis”. I remember those words like it was yesterday because I pulled off the road and just sat in stunned silence for I don’t know how long. They played Elvis singing “Memories”, and I could barely hold my emotions in check.

@@ElvisistheMan_ yeah she wasn’t impressed but I said baby that’s not the man I saw in Dayton and in Vegas in 73-74. I was sad she’d never get to experience the electricity in the air and how women started screaming as the lights went down, and the theme from 2001 a space odyssey started building. I remember a critic saying the only artist in the world who could use that music and not appear arrogant was Elvis Presley. If you go back to the news coverage of his death it was literally the only thing that was discussed on the news till after his funeral. It was like the president died. He was loved that much. I’ll tell you what I saw in Dayton, Ohio. He was in great shape wearing a red jumpsuit. Women would always be in the front row and it was amazing the power he had over them. Anyway he’d sweat and he’d wipe the sweat with these silk scarves he wore around his neck. He’d toss them out and women would kill each other to get them. There’s a mom with a little girl about seven on her shoulders and he puts one around her neck and some woman grabs it and rips it from the child’s hand. Of course the little girl is sobbing and so is her mother. Suddenly Elvis stops the show and tells security to bring the child to him. He sits her on his knee and wipes her tears and asks her name. I don’t remember, but he sings “I can’t help falling in love with you” to her. When he’s done he removed a $25,000 necklace that was 18kt gold encrusted with diamonds around her neck. He told security to make sure no one touched her and to escort her and her mom to their car after the concert. Then he kissed the girls mom and put a scarf around her neck then he just continued the concert. If made all the major papers across the country and that’s when I thought this guy is the real deal. I remember thinking of that sitting in my car as I listened to “memories”. I wonder if that now woman still has that because it’s a part of music history and god knows what a collector would pay for it.

This is the best Elvis channel of its kind. Well crafted David with the inclusion of the Stones at the end. From a career standpoint I believe the greatest tragedy is that we only got a glimpse of Elvis' prime. Even some of his 1971 shows are erratic. We missed Elvis on stage in the 60's. If it hadn't been for Elvis, I don't know where popular music would be. He was the one that started it all off, and he was definitely the start of it for me." Sums it up really. Thanks again, Dave. By 1976, Elvis Presley was gravely to ill from his medical conditions and exhausted from non-stop touring. Every artist has times where creativity slows for any reason, and Elvis Presley had his around the time Elton John met him. Elvis Presley was going to take a year to eighteen months off to combat his physical, mental, creativity problems to arise like a phoenix again with new sounds, songs and images which he was to showcase with a first leg of a world tour in Europe. Elvis Presley never got the chance to overcome his problems while the sheer volume of unparalleled of his musical genius will echo for Eternity. Elton John was correct to state Elvis Presley possessed the greatest influence in rock and roll history. Yet, Elton John could have also acknowledge that his influence will never wane. Rest in peace, Elvis Aaron Presley for your legacy is secure as long as people listen to music.
