Some of his less known songs are just as good, if not better than the hits, just because of his amazing vocal ability. His 1970 live version of “Bridge over Troubled Water” is fabulous! My dad loved Elvis. My parents saw Jailhouse Rock at the theater on their first date. 15 to 20 years later, my dad called a radio station to answer an Elvis trivia question while home sick from work one day. Because he got the answer right, they wanted him to come down to the radio station with 2 other finalists for a live Elvis trivia quiz show. My dad won and he and my mom won a trip to Memphis and got to tour Graceland. We live in Kansas and had no money for travel, so this was the first and only time my dad got to go. My dad passes away on my birthday a couple years ago from covid. We fot a puppy about a year later and decided to name him Elvis in honor of my dad. My son and i realized later that Elvis has a little white lightening bolt on his forehead. I had to explain TCB to my son, but it just seemed to be meant to be. Elvis' '68 Comeback Special, to be broadcast on NBC, was the first time Elvis was in front of a live audience in seven years. Colonel Tom Parker, Elvis's manager, had told the NBC team that he would handle ticket distribution. He assured them that he would recruit ("bus in") fans from across the country to fill the studio. However, by the day of the show, Parker had not distributed the tickets, and only a few people were in line to see the taping. So, producer-director Steve Binder and his team asked people from a nearby Bob's Big Boy restaurant to attend, and also advertised on local radio. For the informal jam session, Elvis, clad in black leather and surrounded by a few hundred, non-paying fans, played with a small group of musicians including guitarist Scotty Moore and percussionist DJ Fontana, who had been members of his 1950s backing band "The Blue Moon Boys."

I have read about Tom Parker not giving the tickets out. I don’t know if it was an act of sabotage because he didn’t agree with something or he couldn’t be bothered. Luckily, Steve Binder made sure there was an audience for filming.

After his world-conquering fame in the 1950s and early 1960s, it's fair to say that Elvis's star was on the wane. His manager, "Colonel" Tom Parker, kept Elvis away from live performance for 7 years, and rather than going into the studio to record great albums, Elvis was churning out bad movie soundtracks for even more bad movies. So, it's fair to say that Elvis wasn't all too happy with where he was. He wanted a change, and in 1968, he got it. The clip you watched comes from the legendary 1968 Elvis Comeback TV Special. Btw, unbelievably, "Colonel" Tom Parker originally wanted Elvis to perform without any dialogue, wearing a cardigan sweater like that worn by Perry Como, in front of a fireplace and a Christmas tree, and sing 20 Christmas songs. Thank God this idea was squashed....

Elvis originally got big in the 50’s. He went in the army and the ‘68 comeback special was his return to his career. It was a TV special in a studio and it was a mixture of new material and his hits from his early career. He grew up in the south and although he definitely knew country music he was fond of the blues and boogie-woogie music that were popular in black nightclubs, and he was friends with a lot of people in that scene. So he was kind of regarded as a very black white guy, which made him popular with the younger folks in the 50’s and not so popular with some of their parents. And yes, he was a sex symbol. Those moves were pretty risqué in the 50’s, girls were getting overheated and passing out watching him work those hips. But Elvis also loved Gospel music and in the later part of his career, he and his band always warmed up by singing gospel songs. Elvis was a good dude who lived a kind of tragic life in a way. And your Michael Jackson comparison isn’t really out of bounds. The King of Rock and the King of Pop? The comparison is an old one. Did you know Michael Jackson married Elvis’s daughter in 1994?

He was the hand picked "white savior" of RnR to sell to middle America white families with teen kids, because people were fearful that their white kids liked the black music too much. So they needed a white savior to put on Ed Sullivan etc. Even though Chuck Berry was already 10 times better by 1956.

If you want to hear a song that showcases Elvis’ voice range and his control, listen to ITS NOW OR NEVER.

I saw him the first time - in Louisville Kentucky in 1956 - when I was 10 years old. I bought a new dress and pop beads for the show LOL

ELVIS & HIS NERVES: Steve Binder, the producer-director of the special related a little story which took place in the dressing room right before Elvis was due to go on: Elvis was extremely nervous and he told Binder that he didn't know any of the songs, he forgot all the words, & wasn't going out there, & Binder said "I don't care if you walk out, just say hello & then walk off, but you ARE going out." And out he came. You're referring to the song "If I Can Dream" which closed the '68 special & was due to the assassinations of both King & Robert Kennedy -- Kennedy was assassinated as the special was being worked on & close to wrapping up when Binder & Elvis saw the TV news when it happened.

He was very nervous doing that portion of the show. I love the JAM SESSION part of that live performance. He had finished the commitment for the films or almost maybe 1 left or something like that. I also love the version in the movie that he choreographed himself.

@@ladysky2883 Elvis was just nervous, period. Even in '70 you could feel his nerves & see it on his face when he walked out on that Vegas stage. He himself said he was always nervous because "each time it's a different crowd." Regards choreography for the film -- Alex Romero was the choreographer but Elvis wanted to do certain things his way. Any film that's going to have dancing will always have a choreographer on set, unless of course it's someone like the great Gene Kelly. The problem is that Romero was never given credit due to some internal strife & most people aren't even aware of him. Later on an article was written up in Variety mag., an apology of sorts, but too little, too late. Romero went on to work w-Elvis on “Double Trouble” & “Clambake” in 1967 & “Speedway” in 1968.

Your opening theme song is by Thin Lizzy fronted by Phil Lynott. He was a big Elvis fan and recorded a great tribute called 'King's Call' when Elvis died. Nothing beats Elvis, and this whole 1968 TV show is awesome ❤

@78 been to oodles of concerts of all generes. Saw Elvis twice as a young man and older after weight gain. NO ONE has or had his charisma. It was palpable.
