It's a really good movie and the soundtrack is great. "Treat Me Nice" and "You're So Square" were all great songs. They added in the background singers (chanting) for the movie clip. @Too Sushi This was a scene from one of Elvis' movies of the same title. Just a side note, Elvis hated doing all these movies from what others said. Col. Parker, his manager, kept signing him to multi movie contracts until around 1968, when Elvis told him no more movies. Elvis wanted get back on stage and do his music. This is when he introduced his 1968 come back tour on NBC and introduced his black leather suit. Pants and jacket. The show was live and recorded over several episodes because of the massive turn out of fans. Next to his live concertfrom Hawaii a few years later, which was televised live via satellite to 75 countrys around the world, Elvis' 68 comeback tour was the most watch program on TV for its time.

I don't know if it's true or not, but I had heard something years ago about how, yes, Elvis wanted to do his music most of all, but he didn't mind doing movies. His issue was that if he were going to do movies, he wanted to do serious movies, not the 'fluff' movies the Col. kept signing him on for. As much as he didn't want to do these, though, they were basically the first music videos, which is yet another way he had a huge influence in the music industry.

Elvis' character in the film 'Jailhouse Rock' was named Vince Everett. At the beginning of the movie, Vince kills a man in a fistfight and goes to prison for manslaughter. His cell block partner teaches him to play guitar. After release a chance meeting with a record industry girl sets him on the road to a singing career. The 'Jailhouse Rock' number is from a scene where Vince is doing a TV special and does a dance song comically connected to his jailbird years. This scene has effectively become known as the first true 'rock video' due to the fact it was totally based around a 'rock 'n' roll' song.

Elvis said there is no way I can or want to do that, so they asked Elvis to show them how he moved, a few hours later you have what you just saw. Love when you do the Elvis videos. Honey, Elvis started a lot of what has been done since. He was a product of the jazz/blues/country/rock singers singers that he listened to, growing up. He wore pink shirts, saw the Osmond's wearing jumpsuits, and Engelbert Humperdinck wearing pork chop sideburns, and he mimicked them, and people thought he created it, because Elvis OWNED it.

Jailhouse Rock was the title of Elvis' 3rd movie! In the movie, Elvis was sent to prison for involuntary manslaughter. This Jailhouse Rock dance and song number was a Televised talent show the prison put on. Elvis always said this was one of his favorite movie songs to sing because he had been given a lot of say so when it came to the choreography of it! In the movie, he is a singer trying to make it big, but accidently kills a man in a fist fight and his career is put on hold to serve his prison sentence. GREAT MOVIE! If you enjoy Elvis' music, you should watch his movies. Many of them are much like a broadway stage show. What i mean by that is this....they're telling a story, and Elvis can be doing anything...anyWHERE. He could be driving his car, flying a plaine, riding a horse....and he just breaks into song....Ndand damned if a band doesn't start playing....even if there is no band in the scene or movie. After the song, back to the story. Many of Elvis' movie songs were pretty short, and for that reason...they wanted to get back to the storyline quickly, but also wanted Elvis to be able get some songs in there. All that so Elvis could release a full record of soundtrack songs. Elvis didn't like simging in his movies, but his manager made him do so because it would sell records as well as movie tickets. Elvis was his cash cow....he used Elvis. There was ONE movie he did where he didn't sing at all anywhere in the storyline...only song was over the opening titles. If you like broadway and musicals, you'd enjoy his movies.

Hi Sushi. I commented on your video for "If I Can Dream" as well. In 1957, Elvis filmed and released his 3rd motion picture. It was titled "Jailhouse Rock". That movie is one of his most well known, and this is the scene from the film where he sings the title track. In the film, Elvis winds up in jail after accidentally killing a man in a fist fight. After being released from prison, he becomes a successful recording artist, and this scene was a television performance for his character named Vince Everett. Fun fact for you too...Elvis was very hands on with this scene, and worked closely with the choreographer to put his vision for the scene on the screen. Hope this helps! :)

It's from the movie Jailhouse Rock. This is a music video he made in the movie, so that people would see convicts and ex-convicts as human beings. It was a 'fun' song just to make it easy for other folks to swallow that bitter reality. In the movie, he beat up a guy who was abusing a woman at a bar, he got thrown in jail for 6 months, jail turned him into a cruel person (he was sweet when he first got to jail), and then a life-changing event makes him a good person again. He definitely didn't rock out during the part where he was actually in jail. He was mostly just crying. The part about "You're the cutest jailbird" just means the jail in the song was a co-ed jail.

"You're the cutest jailbird I ever did see" was just an inside joke by the song's writers, Leiber & Stoller. It had no bearing to the movie's story or to Elvis' character in the film. Leiber & Stoller, absolute legends as writers in rock 'n' roll, were straight, but they loved making this inside joke.

Yeah....if you listen to the song, there are a few lines that might be determined as homosexual, but in fact were not. They did that on purpose. You can tell Elvis enjoyed the jokes too. Look at his expression when he sings them. 😊

@@dallasdrew1164 The Purple Gang was an organized crime outfit that terrorized Detroit in the 1920s. 😐

@@Chaos1214 I know that but Lieber and Stoller who wrote the lyrics said it was a gay slang. I'm not gay & I don't care but that's what the song writer's said.... & I've heard abt the Detroit Purple Gang.

It is from a movie where he was serving time, and was released and went on to be a singer. Jailbird is someone who has served time or is serving time.

Thank you for remembering the most talented, the most versatile entertainer in the world that God graced us with. Sold over 1.5 Billion records and still counting, no one, not the Beatles, not Michael Jackson or anyone else comes even close no matter who might lie about it. The late great James Brown said Elvis took the abuse in the beginning and broke down the door for all others to go through. Muhammad Ali at his funeral said, there wasn't a mean bone in his body and he loved him. Love you, love Elvis.

I'm sure someone mentioned this already, but Elvis was so afraid he couldn't do this skit. He thought he was going to mess it up. But they said once the music started it was automatic for him. I think it's cute how some of the verbage you're not aware of that we who lived those days were normal things to say. Such as "Jailbird". If you watch old black and white movies you'll hear some of the terms. His voice got so good as he matured. His voice was so good in his teens and 20's but once he hit vegas he really smoothed out his vocals. He practiced quite a bit to get to that point. He could do it all. He was MJ before MJ was born. Lot's of cool stories about him meeting the Beatles. They were in awe of him.

The Video was from his movie, entitled 'Jailhouse Rock'. A jailbird is like in today's terms, a "Repeat Offender"

The idea of this video, if I'm not mistaken, was that Elvis's character in a movie, was in jail at the time. I believe the film was "Jailhouse Rock". It's been awhile since I've seen any of his old movies, so I can't say that I'm 100% accurate.
