EMAX Nanohawk + GNB27 | Hands-On Review

The EMAX Nanohawk is a curious little drone. It looks like a whoop, but it actually has a carbon fiber frame and differently shaped guards. Also, it has the new GNB27 battery connector. Do those things make it better than a typical whoop? Yes and no. Here's my full hands-on review. Links and info below...

On the BT2.0 connector I made a black line on the minus side of the connector with a permanent marker.. So it's easier to plug it in.. And you can charge it with a PH2.0 charger too (thus they fall out easily)

In theory camera tilt is adjustable by moving the whole rubber holding it (is should have tabs on the backside where the "handle" Is). Also Eachine sells 250mAh batteries with ET2.0 connectors, which are compatible with GNB27. I bought an Eachine 65pro, which comes with a 6channel charger ph2.0 and et2.0 connectors on it.

Emax needs to change the hardness grade of the plastic on the ducts...they are too soft as is. If they make that change (or someone makes an after-market upgrade) then this will be a worthy Tinywhoop.

This was the first drone I ever got a review unit of and it was so underwhelming I just didn't want to bother. Flew it twice (once outside and once inside through a little track I set up) and put it back in the box and it's been sitting there for 2 months 😄 Pretty sure my battery had a loose connection too as on third charge it almost instantly went to land now and just had almost no power at all, I thought I forgot to charge it at the time. I agree ducts are completely useless, feels like you can't bump anything without them bending into your props and stopping them dead so might as well just cut them off to save weight. I've ordered a spare frame to try cutting this one but it never arrived from China... Flew pretty nice in acro though, but I haven't flown it enough to claim it's a lot better than Meter65/Mobula6 at that. So yeah I guess if you have other whoops and toothpicks but want something even smaller to acro with, this might be the one, otherwise... heck no 🙂 So yeah, good and honest review as expected 👍👍
@nikotttin
@nikotttin 3 года назад
Hi Mr. Shutterbug, This was a very thorough review. Many thanks for the hard work! I was wondering whether by cutting the cards off you wouldn't actually save your props? With the guards, the prop is slowed and twisted. Without you simply block the motor... I also want to cast my vote on top of the others, a 40mm nano toothpick could definitely be a fun project. I actually just bought the carbon frame for that exactly 😉
@MrShutterBug
@MrShutterBug 3 года назад
The guards don't protect the props as well as a typical whoop frame, but they do protect the props some. Thus, I would expect to have even more broken props if the guards were removed. But I would also expect it to fly better. So there are trade-offs. If I make a 40mm version, I will probably use 2-blade props like I did with the 75mm ultralight whoop. 2-blade props are more durable because they can rotate out of the way.

I've experienced the same loose connector issue with GNB27. Out of 16 batteries I've bought so far (4x 650mah and 12x 450mah), I've seen 2 connectors on the batteries that had that same problem. I also noticed that these two connectors felt more loose when connecting/disconnecting to the male connector on the drone/charger. My solution was to use tweezers to very, very slightly bend the male connector pins outwards, to make the connection tighter. I haven't had a problem since. Also, after each time connecting the batteries to the drone, I always wiggle the battery wires around to make sure it's secure and power doesn't cut out. Perhaps I shouldn't have to do all this but the connector is so good on voltage sag for my Babytooth.

It's great fun outside, pushing it really hard ive broken two carbon frames already. Both time where next to the motor it folded the arm. Its great but lacks durability, worth it for me as it flys like a lil 5inch in the front yard. Powerloops, matty flips its so capable.
@MrShutterBug
@MrShutterBug 3 года назад
Do you think the arm provides enough protection for the motor, or does the motor sometimes take the impact? They could break pretty easily too if they were hit directly. I'm considering making some tiny TPU extensions for the arms so that an impact on the tip flexes the TPU some before hitting the motor or the frame. Not a prop guard, but just kind of a springy buffer. Do you think it would help?
@slowentropy4531
@slowentropy4531 3 года назад
@@MrShutterBug arm provides no protection. But the thing that breaks is when the motor gets hit it has alot of leverage on that little arm. It breaks right at the end of arm at motor mount every time. Tbh It doesn't bother me as it has to be a big crash that would kill a mob6 or meteor frame or motor anyways. The frame is $5.50 and takes about 10mins to change and you don't have to solder or disconnect anything. All worth it to be able to do the world smallest power loops and matty flips in the front garden.

Kevin from Emuflight recently released Emu 0.3.3 for F3 boards. Can I use more/less the same PID-s settings and DAS configuration from attached dump file on F3 based 65mm BRUSHED whoop?
@MrShutterBug
@MrShutterBug 3 года назад
Cool. If you run Emu you can use the DAS feature, but you probably don't want to use my PIDs because a brushed whoop is pretty different. I mean, you're welcome to try, but you might get better results with the default Emu tune or a tune designed for brushed drones. Patrick Clarke from Project Mockingbird flies some brushed whoops. He probably has a good tune for them. Cheers!

@@MrShutterBug Can't really blame you there, Nate. Emax has some of the best manuals for their quads but they do make them really hard to find. Thank you! Very nice review. And me too I am curious to fly it without prop guards outside. What is the center to center distance between the motor mounting holes? @MrShutterBug
@MrShutterBug 3 года назад
Thanks! The wheelbase is 65mm just like a whoop. I don't have the equipment to test the XT30 vs GNB27 properly, but I would not expect any difference in performance on a drone like this. There just isn't that much current flowing. Now, on something like a 3" Babytooth, there might be more of a difference to justify the weight of an XT30.

@@cristianosaturni I took a more careful measurement. The Nanohawk motor screws are 6.5mm apart. Yes, you have to unlock the VTx. Some channels are not legal in many countries, so they have chosen to lock them out, to avoid legal problems (not that many other companies care about that). The unlocking procedure is clearly stated in the manual. It also clearly warns you about what will happen if you select a prohibited channel before unlocking it.

I was super disappointed with this one. As soon as you crash, it is basically over, swap the props and try again. Outside I got extrem jello. I taped the cam down which made it slightly better - but still no fun at all for me. The soft hoops makes it impossible for me to fly indoors, the props pop off all the time. I like that EMAX tried to do something different, but nah - this one is not for me at all. I like the FC/VTX combo though.
