Learn how to chainstitch - one of the fancier outline stitches. There's a companion blog post here that shows lots of examples that use chain stitch, as well as links to a different video showing how to do an extra fancy version of this stitch. www.shinyhappy...

@iheartphoto Just starting out I'd recommend a solid-color woven cotton. Nothing stretchy or with any kind of texture to it. After you've gotten the hang of things, the sky's the limit! You can embroider on stretchy T-shirts, fancy velvets - just about anything!

I was on Pinterest and I saw a pin on chain stitching in order to create words on your work. And I thought that was cool that way your work gets to look really fancy. Although the site (after clicking on the link) does show step-by-step instructions with pictures I couldn't understand it. And it mentioned, "Fasten your yarn on the wrong side of the knitted piece." I know your video doesn't demonstrate that or maybe I missed it. But nonetheless I wanted to see how to chain stitch and I came upon your video which was great. Thank you for explaining so well and demonstrating a couple of times. And thank you for choosing a nice bright color. Sometimes when someone demonstrates using gray or black yarn I can't see were exactly the person is putting their tool in. So thank you.

@abbyvanessa I recommend using either backstitch or couching for lettering. Both of them do well on tight curves (you just need to do smaller stitches with backstitching) and they're smooth and easy to read. I have videos for both of them - look in the embroidery playlist. Good luck! It sounds lovely!

they are The end result looks like a tambour stitch but they are worked differently. As far as I know, tambour stitch uses a crochet hook, while this is a straight embroidery technique.

I just taught myself to embroider yesterday using a couple of photo tutorials. I couldn't make much sense of the instructions for the chain stitch, so I came here. I'm glad I did! Thank you so much for making it clear for me. (I have to admit that I put the needle back very close to the original hole, not in the original hole, for each stitch because otherwise, my last chain stitch would come loose. My one photo tutorial said that's okay. Is that fine?)

Wendi, your videos have been really helpful, thank you! I do have somewhat of a related question that I simply cannot find the answer to anywhere, it seems. I'm planning on embroidering a simple, small design onto a baby's onesie and I'm wondering if I need to cover the reverse side of the clothing to protect the stitching/knots or the baby's skin? Any help anybody can offer would be appreciated! Thank you!

@BennettAshleigh You'll need to use a stabilizer on the back of the onesie since it's stretchy. There's a video for that at wendigratz(dot)blogspot(dot)com/2010/12/how-to-embroider-stretchy-fabrics(dot)html . After I'm done stitching I cut away most of the excess stabilizer and then toss it in the wash. I find that the brand I use (Sulky) softens up nicely and isn't at all itchy to wear. No need to add anything to the inside. :-)

Please I need your help. I saw a video on Facebook where they were showing how to fix holes and stuff on pants using Chinese embroidery as well as patches. In two parts they make this wierd chain stitch and then pull it through the fabric and it sews layers together. The next one has a hole in some jeans and they lay the Jean oatch over top and make the wierd chain stitch around it then pull it all back through and the patch is sewed to the pants. I can NOT find this particular stuck after days and days of searching RU-vid. Please help! (I can link the Facebook video too if need be)
