Thank you for letting the World know how simple this issue can be. I've seen some crazy nuts on RU-vid talking all kinds of stuff. I just had this issue today with my wife's medium size SUV. I jacked it up and immediately put grease inside the boots while wearing gloves, however, I will repair it tomorrow. I will go to the dealership to ask how much it'll be the boot kit, I WILL CERTAINLY RUN OUT SCREAMING! I know also another trick but have not done it. Once It proves that work, it will be posted. YOU have done great with this video. Thank you so very much!
Don’t scare people, you can drive a LONG time with torn CV boots. Eventually it will start clicking when you turn the wheel, that’s fine to drive on still. After that point it will start to click when you’re going straight, then you really should bring it in for service when you have the time. These things are so robust it’s crazy. If you’re on the side of the road and look under your car and see a torn boot, don’t sweat it.
Well put. I thought the video was centered on a track day, or just simply put anything to keep you racing for the day, but Who the fuck is gonna patch a boot on the side of the road
Junk yota trucks holding a suspension together with a bunch of CV joints and boots, another way car stealer repair shops make $$$$$. Chevy only has 4 on their 4x4, rolling over 300k on mine. If the axle isn't worn out and just a torn boot , use micro zipties if at the edge of boot and roofing tar to patch that area or any other area of a tear on a boot. That's a permanent fix, as durable or better than new, alot less $$$. His idea of repacking the boot with grease is still a good idea before making a repair.
1) Hot knife / soldering iron (any metal object you can heat and hold safely ) - If the hole is not very large you can fix a boot with this method. This one is somewhat permanent if done well. 2) RTV also works, it just needs ample time to dry and requires that the boot does not flex very much on the repair area.
Just found out my boot was completely ripped in half installing my leveling kit. At 10pm with no garage before a snow storm, I'm glad I found this video.
I just spent all last week looking at that frame and suspension. Got a 2nd gen Tacoma just like this. Cleaned up rust, primed and painted the frame, replaced the whole suspension and both lower control arms and all four alignment cams. My CVs looked fine. :)
If the hole is very small some flexible sealing spray works really well as a temporary repair. I did that once & it held up for a few months before leaking again. Let it dry completely before driving it of course.
Buying time 😂 it works! But a worn out CV will and can exert more wear and tear to the gearbox. So best not to drive around with clunking, crackling or ticking noises coming from driveshafts. I experienced gearbox bearing wear. Had to change them all. It wasn't easy! Especially when I didn't have the tools necessary. Had to use my heat gun to remove most of the old bearings. A couple were preloaded bearings. They had to be shimmed using backlash measurements and engineers blue dye. Took me a few days.
I carry a can of Flex Seal and Flex Tape with me everywhere I go. It's in my emergency roadside bag. And YES that crap sticks even on greasy surfaces! If you don't carry it with you, you only need ask yourself, "why not!?"
You have taught me more than my dad ever has ab cars with this video bro told me it’s not his issue and that I’m a dumbass and my wheels gonna explode thank you for existing your saving my ass beyond belief my tundra just broke one I believe a few days ago and my dumbass kept driving with it
My guy! Plastic bags and zip ties!! 💯Just did mine up with gasket maker, but plan o going over that with some eternalbond tape tomorrow before I drive it.
If you have a boot with the fifty pence shape and only a normal round boot cut the ripped boot two inches below big side like a fifty pence so you have a round solid point all ready locked on CV put CV boot on the rubber and pull up with tiepulls or metal band clips the soft universal CV boots you cut to size best you can call them stretchy CV boots in UK Scotland
Had the small end of CV boot ripped off so got some rubber silicone gloves for the work shop cut down side so big area and put grease in to boot and rapped two pairs of gloves around and lots o small cable ties held in grease over a year when putting on new boot all the boot was dry and only under the first rubber glove side had grease on .
Good video Wyatt! I just had to do a lot of CV work last weekend, I used a inner CV cup to fix my driveshaft. Just make sure if you regrease the the CV make sure it's Moly grease.
i've glued my cv-joint-Boot with industrial rubber glue and it has held for years and still does.. unfortunately the zip tie that held the boot on the joint slipped off so dirt did eventually get in.
Need to replace boots. But don't want to take cv joint out. Going to cut the boot in half and put it on. Question is want can I use to seal it back together. Tryed super glue and flex glue and no bond.
Ive got a 2005 hyundai tucson, fwd. My inner cv joint, passenger side is torn where the metal clamp is. How urgent is replacement of an inner CV boot compared to an outer CV boot?
There's this stuff called TREX tape, degrease everything and wrap the shit out of it,put some zip ties on it to keep the tape from coming loose.Itll get you by until you can fix it right.
Just replace my outer and inner tie rods about a week ago and didnt realize how important the boot clamp was.. should i be alarmed? going to get them asap
Is it possible to add too much grease and cause overheating? I ask because on bicycles and dirtbikes I use the following rule: if a bearing doesn't spin continuously and fast, like the steering bearings, which never exceed half a revolution in normal use (unless I wreck it really bad :) ) I will fill the bearing with grease; if the bearinbg spins continuously and fast, like a wheel bearing, I will fill half of it and let it spread the grease as it spins, to prevent the aforementioned overheating from happening.
Ha ha ha, reminded me so much of my rallying days. We never started a rally without a roll of duct tape and a pack of cable ties. Lovin' the "get you home" fix. My rallying was all in rear drive cars, so I never had "gaiter trouble", but if my car did have I'd pack a couple of these in the service car (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MuEgTqUCBDI.html). You probably wouldn't do this on a daily but on our rally car we actually made little stone guards to fit on track rod ends and we doubled up the inner rack boot by finding a slightly larger one to go over the standard article. Love your presenting style too, so you've gained a sub!
Who the hell is going to mess about like this on the road side?? 🤣🤣 Best advice would be to keep driving steady it's not gonna break be good for 1000 miles just get it replaced at soonest convenience maybe at home if you can or local garrage
No the only way they would need grease packed is if there is a tear. Better to replace or patch the boot if you can. No need to take the boot off and re grease every so often. Might as well replace the cv axle if it starts going bad after 1 patch
there is no way a car would pass a mot with the type of bodge up you are suggesting if its a needle hole then yes you could do a permanent fix its best to keep all rubber boots supple by spraying them with a silicon solution to keep the rubber supple.
Who said anything about passing an MOT you weirdo? This is a temp fix until you replace the boot so you dont wreck your drive shaft. You are a simpleton mate.
