I'm a 310 owner. If anyone here buys a 310, the FIRST thing you should do is have a competent shop inspect and RIG the gear as per the maitenance manual, including the motor. Simply 'swinging the gear' is unacceptable. It's a well engineered system, but must be rigged.
@therealjimmysworld

100% agree
@wakkogn9351
@wakkogn9351 Месяц назад
What does that mean?
@Avi8tor857
@Avi8tor857 Месяц назад
@@wakkogn9351 The gear system is a complicated set of leavers, arms etc. They all have adjustments. If any of the adjustments are out of whack then it puts additional strain on the motors/joints. By "rigging it" you are getting all parts in adjustment so that they work with minimum strain and wear. It often has enough power to push through bad adjustments and hides it by simply doing a swing test.
@wakkogn9351

Airline pilot with more than 15.000 flight hours and been in few emergencies I can say you did the right decision. As soon the fire hazard was eliminated by pulling out fuse…., then there was no time critical emergency. As you perfectly explained you had time to think and review landing gear issues. Despite your limited experience you make the right choose and didn’t stress out or panicked that’s means your professional skills are good and I congratulate you. If someone tells you otherwise just answer back : I will love to see you in that circumstance. You can be proud of yourself. Take care Jimmy and all the best.

A ballsy honest video Jimmy. Respect Sir. 1. You could’ve put it on jacks and carried out mechanical and electrical rigging checks, 10 swings for confidence after an eight month lay up and if all is normal off jacks and go flying. The motor may or may not have failed during the swings. 2. You flew the first leg with no issues. 3. If the maintenance manual doesn’t call for brush wear checks, you won’t know until it fails. 4. The electrical connection to the brush may have caused the brush itself to break down or the brush breaking down may have caused the electrical connection to fail, either way it was goosed. The thing is you worked the problem methodically, got the gear down, got the plane down and stepped out of it. Others may do it differently but you were in the hot seat. Well done

Hoover did a debrief of a video "FlyWithKay" did where he basically congratulated her on making smart decisions. I think the same would go here. Aviation is all about conservative decision making. Mike Patey turned me onto the three strike rule with his Turbulence engine explosion video and I now apply it to all my decision making as far as when to fly or not. When you're in the air it's the same story, except at that point you just need to take care of yourself. I hope to have the same calm as Jimmy did if (God forbid) I ever have an in-flight emergency...

Jimmy. that was truly a FINE example of how to handle in-flight emergencies. You first evaluated the situation (most importantly, did not panic), considered options, chose the best one, briefed on emergency procedures thoroughly, and the outcome was as successful as one could ever hope for. This video would be a great training tool for someone learning to fly. I think that Hoover on Debrief would completely agree with me. Also, it was nice to see you serious for a change - you've had me worried at times over the last two years, but I see that you have very sound judgement.

So glad for everyone involved - the crew AND family - that everything turned out OK in the end - 'just' a burned-up landing gear motor. pulling the breaker was the correct response. Just about anyone can fly a plane when things are going well. It is when the 'schtuff-hitting-the-oscillating-ventilateur' that pilot training is for. i.e.: knowing the systems and what to do when any one-, two- or three of them conspire against our wishes. As you said in the beginning of this video - it is up to the old gray matter between the ears to minimize the risks - yes risks - of flying, and to do it in the safest manner possible. That is why good pilots will do a complete pre-flight check - following a checklist - so nothing is overlooked before EVERY flight. A lot can happen in three hours of flight with vibration. Nuts/pins/screws come loose - check those aileron hinge cotter pins. Wires and cables can rub and chafe - almost fifty years ago one of my instructors told me to 'shake your tail-feathers' (elevators/rudder) to check for excessive play. Water can get into the fuel at a fueling stop - sump it!. If the weather changes enroute, be prepared to postpone the flight. Don't fall victim to 'get-there-itis'! Risk assessment!!!

Years ago I had a very similar problem with my Debonair. Worn brushes hung up on their wires, combined with a slightly out of round commutator, resulted in a dead motor. Had I turned the crank slightly they probably would have made contact and got the gear down electrically, but I didn’t know that at the time. I hand cranked the gear down successfully. Hand cranking is much more difficult in flight than it is when sitting on jacks. The air load on the nose gear makes a big difference. Your decisions were sound, and I am glad that you had a good outcome.

Check out Dan Gryder's or Juan Browne's sites to see and hear the results of bad decisions flying into weather, night landings, pilot stress, lack of knowledge on hot day flying, etc.! You took the time to run thru all the permutations that resulted in you being able to make the right decisions and come out of this as a well prepared, fortunate and (Lucky) pilot. Go to the maintenance manual rigging procedure and start at step one and go all the way to the end. All of your landing gear issues will be solved. If you jump into the middle or stop early you will likely experience a collapsed gear during a landing. 24:49
