Emergency Landing RAF Typhoon takes Arrestor cable

In the event of an emergency, the RAF Typhoon would typically attempt to land at the nearest suitable airfield. The pilot would follow established emergency procedures, which might include notifying air traffic control of the situation, declaring an emergency, and requesting priority landing.
If necessary, the Typhoon's fuel dump capability may be utilized to reduce weight for landing. The pilot would also follow specific emergency landing procedures outlined in the aircraft's manuals and training.
However, it is important to note that specific emergency landing procedures and actions can vary depending on the nature of the emergency and the judgment of the pilot.

When Gerry Anderson's 'Thunderbirds' was on TV when I was a kid, I was always more excited to see the teeny-weeny emergency vehicles zooming about with their lights and sirens going than in watching what the main International Rescue puppet muppets were getting up to. I knew that every fire engine and ambulance had a driver and a crew with a family and friends, but we never got to learn anything about their lives. Unsung heroes indeed... Whatever. It's the neeh nah, neeh nah, neeh nah that counts.😁 Nice catch, by the way!

The American RHAG System is different plus the F-15 is a lot heavier. I was in Saudi working on Tornado for BAe Systems when one of the US Aircraft Carriers had an Emergency one evening and due to it being Dark and serious they decided to land all airborne aircraft on Dharan's airbase we had the luxury of 3 runways so they were landing on both the Military and Civil runways during the recovery an F14 declared a hydraulic emergency and wanted to take the RHAG so the Saudi Airforce Air Traffic controller decided to land it on the Civil runway which had a French Air Force mobile RHAG system rigged for Mirages on it well when the F14 landed it ripped the whole system out of the desert and towed it down the runway causing a lot of damage to the surface and lights and totalling the French RHAG completely it was designed for an aircraft half weight of the F14 Whooops!!!!

So how did the Typhoon capture the arrester wire? Do they have an arrester hook? If so, then surely the Naval Fleet Air Arm should have them too instead of this new fangled but very very expensive American aeroplane called the F-35!! (Which evidently costs a fortune to maintain.)
@coningsbylive
@coningsbylive 10 месяцев назад
Hi, all Jets have arrester hooks, F15s, Typhoons, Tornados etc, all for Emergency landings. For the Typhoon to be able to operate from an Aircraft carrier, the landing gear and hook would need strengthen, which would mean more weight etc, plus our carriers would need massive changes. Sadly we are completely stuck with the F35B

sorry to go on, but: that pilot landed on a possibly faulty undercarriage with presumably a full belly drop tank of fuel.... presumably the typhoons need these to get them into useful orbits... that was brave ...!!! the US would have jettisoned that, right..? hitting a few camper vans...

It really makes me wander why they don’t fly the Typhoon off the carriers, seams to be able to stop short enough and take off fast enough for the carriers deck don’t you think??
@johnhudghton3535
@johnhudghton3535 10 месяцев назад
@phillipbanes5484 i knew the Senior Civil Servant responsible for the air ops side of the Carriers. He wanted the Catabar system so the carriers could chuck Typhoons and almost anything else required off the flight deck. Sadly, Cameron, the Eton Mess phony Tory penny pinched the project and cut the budget to "keep costs down." So we end up with carriers that can only fly less capable VSTOL aircraft... My friend resigned over that matter. You cut costs on one component and then have to pay the price by buying more expensive and less effective aircraft.

@@johnhudghton3535 Sigh. Yes. I read 'arrestor cable' and thought what might have been. While being the last person to defend the typical bungling you mentioned, I was under the impression that one reason they went for the current design was because the EMALS system wasn't ready in time, and a conventional steam catapult wouldn't have been suitable for the powerplant chosen. I also thought that one reason the French pulled out of the Eurofighter project was because it wasn't being made suitable for carriers in the first place. Not pretending I have much expertise in this area, but I do know that you can't just stick an arrestor hook on an aircraft, the airframe needs to be designed to take the stress from scratch ideally. Post hoc modification was deemed too costly and troublesome. I've heard that our carriers can be converted to some degree, they do have a big beam to length ratio, so an angled deck modification at the bow looks possible. Not heard it confirmed whether this is true, nor if it's not possible at all.

@@coningsbylive At least the nose leg was down. Early in the production program a rare two seater landed without the nose leg and the only way to get it into a high drag configuration was to extend the air-to-air refueling probe. The air intake feed runway into the engines and produce some very pretty pictures.
