Emerson, Lake & Palmer perform "Tank" live in Montreal in 1977. This footage is from the "Works: Orchestral Tour". Shot on August 26, 1977 at Montreal's famed Olympic Stadium.
Emerson, Lake & Palmer, also known as ELP, are a sporadically active English progressive rock supergroup. They found success in the 1970s and have sold over forty million albums and headlined large stadium concerts. The band consists of Keith Emerson (keyboards), Greg Lake (bass guitar, vocals, guitar) and Carl Palmer (drums, percussion). They are one of the most popular and commercially successful progressive rock bands.

One of the greatest rock drummers of all time, playing one of the greatest solos in rock history. Replete with technical prowess, improvisation, innovation, showmanship and nearly inhuman stamina, Carl’s solo on this Montreal night would set a standard that would redefine the normal boundaries for rock drumming. Interestingly Carl was and is an admirer of the great Buddy Rich whose style Carl clearly incorporates in his traditional style approach to the kit. Somehow Carl adapted that traditional approach to ELP’s progressive music and, well, the rest is history. Viva Carl and ELP!

You have to be more than great to not just play in Buddy's tribute band but have him call you up to chat & play with his full band shows just how great Carl is & along with the likes of Neil P & Bill Buford they were some lucky as hell musicians to have that honour. There is a 1986 clip which is audio of Carl's performance with Buddy's full band at Ronnie Scotts Club. Simply hot as hell !!!!

I was lucky enough to see them live at the High Voltage Festival in London's Victoria Park in 2010. Loads of great bands playing there over the weekend, but ELP were the headline act on the Saturday night. We waited hours for them to come on stage, securing our place right opposite Keith Emerson and his keyboards. We were right at the front on the barrier less than twenty feet from him. A great performance. My first and only time seeing my favourite trio live. Sadly Keith and Greg no longer with us. Keith grew up in Worthing in West Sussex on the South coast of England. He apparently asked my mate's Mum out on a date years ago but she didn't take him up on it!... Keith Emerson is buried in Lancing cemetery about 9 miles from my home where I am writing this. I pass the area every day on my way to and from work.

There are very few drummers with the stick and finger control that Carl Palmer demonstrates here. His rudimental skills are amazing. His idol was Buddy Rich, and invariably, Carl pays tribute to Buddy during his solo when he goes into his amazing single stroke (from forte to pianissimo), and then the machine gun fire of paradiddles and 2-stroke roll combinations. I write this today after the passing of Keith Emerson, also a genius. ELP was one of the very best of the very best.

True fact: During the Works tour, it took a huge caravan, besides the tractor trailer carrying the band's gear, to transport the orchestra and choir, until they had to ditch them for financial reasons, though not before recording their set in Montreal, resulting in what you see here.

Carl Palmer is one of the truly great and elite percussionists in music history, regardless of genre. Billy Cobham is the only other drummer who might have had a better combination of sheer hand speed and technical virtuosity. Palmer's solos are stunning exhibitions of creativity and mind-boggling physical talent. Now, at 70 years of age, he still plays brilliantly and powerfully. Carl Palmer took percussion in rock music from the background and to another level of artistic excellence.

ELP in 1977 was my first rock concert that I ever saw up in Duluth, MN. I don't recall the orchestra being there due to the venue being so small (Duluth Arena). But thankfully Carl had this very drum kit and Keith has his huge Moog synthesizer. It was the most marvelous show ever! We had to sit in the nosebleed section since we got there late but where we sat gave us a bird's eye view of Carl Palmer and we could see his every move. It was fucking great! I was a percussionist from 4th grade through 12th grade and to see him perform as my very first rock concert was certainly a blessing. ELP rocks on always!

Such a _performer!_ Phenomenal talent as a player. But beyond that he's putting on a show in _how_ he plays, in how he arranged the solo as a song in its own right. Unpopular opinion: Many modern drummers meet or exceed his technical skills and drum chops. (That's not an insult. Music isn't a competition.) But not many entertain the crowd during their performances like this! Cheers to one of the greatest.

@davetoms1
@davetoms1 5 месяцев назад
@@kratino Oh, I'm thoroughly aware of Carl Palmer's body of work. Perhaps you're not aware of the current drumming landscape. Modern drummers learned from Carl, and learned from the greats who learned from Carl. Kids today have access to every recording of every drummer to learn from. Drummers aren't just aspiring to Carl's greatness, they're building on top of what Carl did. As well, you need to understand we have better health, nutrition, and fitness nowadays, so many modern drummers have objectively tighter control, faster muscle response time, and more fluid limb independence. Sure, Carl is vegan and didn't smoke or drink, so he's likely incredibly healthy. But he did drugs. Many modern drummers grow up with their physiotherapists and chiropractors and nutritionists keeping them in peak physical form instead of their drug dealers and whatever food is supplied by catering. All of which speaks to physical ability, not creativity, which is why I clearly stated "technical skills and chops" as I opposed to creative greatness, which is largely subjective anyway. If you don't think many (not all, not most, but many) modern drummers have better technical skills than Carl Palmer, I recommend you start listening to more varied modern music. Modern jazz and progressive metal have incredibly impressive names, and even touring pop stars hire session players with technical proficiency beyond "the greats" of yesteryear like Carl.
@kratino
@kratino 5 месяцев назад
@@davetoms1 I doubt that, even at age 74, there is anything they are doing that Carl couldn't duplicate. And I believe there are things Carl did and has done that they could not duplicate. 65 years of professional practice, and he does still practice, will do that. I would have to hear Carl or someone of his caliber admit this to believe what you're saying.

I find it a shame that ELP's live repertoire had changed in 77. IMO Palmer was a better drummer at that point than he was in 74, but the music was more ambitious and challenging in 74, they never played Pictures or Tarkus the same two nights in a row. I wonder if he regretted their musical change of direction.

This is insanely amazing. Carl Palmer was, without question, the greatest, best drummer of the 70s, let's say through 1970-77 (this tour). I also like his drumming with Asia. But IMHO I have to say he's not more what he used to be. I saw ELP in the 90s, in their first ever tour to Argentina, and I liked him. But I don't like how he is playing now. I saw many videos of the Legacy Tour (the screens of the Royal Albert Hall show, which I saw many times), I saw him here with his band the last time he came (2017), but I don't get into it. Very sorry, I am trying to be honest. Undoubtedly he does deserve all the recognition and a place as one of the greatest drummers in history for things like this, but today I don't feel the same. I have many friends who are big ELP fans, even some play drums, and tell me the same. Sorry, folks if I dissappoint you. It's just my opinion. I prefer to see or listen to the Carl Palmer of the 70s or 80s with Asia, than what he is doing now. A matter of tastes, I suppose.
