I love that Grape flavor too! When I was a kid I used to buy a little box of grape candies that were like red hots only grape flavor. They were in a white rectangle box with a grape character wearing a spartan helmet and were called Alexander the Grape. They were 10 cents. If I had a quarter I would get those, 5 pieces of red licorice and a Big Hunk or AbaaZabaa bar. Good times when you could find empty pop bottles to return for the deposit!

Loved getting to see this little slice of common Japanese snack tastings, but what I loved best was the nostalgia it brought to your face. You looked like you were having a lot of fun here especially, and the snacks brought good memories back for you from your time in Japan. That's what's so great about food, and it's really cool that warm memories and good feelings are shared via culinary experiences on your channel, be they your own or extended across continents in packages others send to you. I sincerely hope you get to taste the world, Emmy!

Now that's a remarkable coincidence. I'm currently reading the visual novel 殻ノ少女: The Second Episode and very early in the novel - which partially is taking place in the 1930s shortly before the second Sino-Japanese War - some of the characters eat Konpeito at a local fair. So I've just learned something about them yesterday. x D

In my country, confeito is called "별사탕," literally means "star (shaped) candy" because of its appearance. They are also familiar in Korea, and eaten with hardtacks by soldiers.

I love Umaibo. The best is the buttered corn flavor. The Mochi Taro is delicious also. I could see myself living off Dagashi in Japan.

I've made them before! Takes a lot of trail and error also a huge sticky mess. Only worth it for vegan marshmallow, or to know what's in them. Otherwise just buying them is a thousand times easier!

+emmymadeinjapan I made strawberry marshmallows from scratch (with homemade strawberry syrup) a couple of weeks ago for Valentine's Day and they were a hit! Definitely much better and softer in texture than any store-bought marshmallows and not cloyingly sweet at all, I was quite surprised. If you're interested, I can provide the recipe so you can try it out, Emmy. :)
