Hi Emmy, this explains the passover food: When the Pharaoh freed the Israelites, it is said that they left in such a hurry that they could not wait for bread dough to rise (leaven). In commemoration, for the duration of Passover no leavened bread is eaten, Thus Matzo (flat unleavened bread) is eaten during Passover and it is a tradition of the holiday. This is why all of the pastry in passover is so flat, because it's made of subbstitues for flour, such as matzo flour, potato flour, and coconut flakes.

+Mike Rowsdower It's because you can't use normal pastry, so you need to find alternative sweets. The truly traditional sweet would be just plain fruits.
@ittay123
@ittay123 8 лет назад
well, it veries. since using flour is an issue (also in most stores here you wouldnt be able to buy regular flour on passover), a lot of the sweets use other things, like nuts, coconut and more eggs... since matza flour (crushed matza crumbs for baking) sucks

You should try making Matza Brei (google a recipe) with any leftover matza you have. It's like a pancake/omelette that a lot of Ashkenazi Jews have and it's absolutely delicious! I'd love to see you make a video, it would be quite a treat!

@ChaoticShelly

Mugduhlena Kuzluwskae you can eat it with sour cream on top, cottage cheese, or even sugar sprinkled over if you want it sweet. It's very common to have for dinner or breakfast since a lot of people are left with a lot of leftover matza during and after the holiday, usually with a small salad next to it but always with something topped on it. So yumm!

Interesting video, since I was raised in a Jewish household, but never had any of these foods. If you're interested in trying some more Passover foods, here's what I grew up with: Charoset - it's a thick spread made with fruits and nuts, goes great on matzah. Gefilte fish - ground up patties of carp, whitefish and pike. Served cold, also great on matzah with white horseradish. An acquired taste, but I love it. Recently became a fan, and love your channel! Keep up the great work!

Emmy, your reviews are always so nice! Something that is eaten at the Seder (ritual feast) on Passover is a matzah and romaine lettuce sandwich that commemorates the way the passover offering was eaten in ancient times (just something interesting to try). Like some earlier commenters said, you might want to eat the extra matzah by making a pizza on it, making matzah brei (basically french toast) or by simply spreading something like cream cheese on it.

You should make matzah brei. It's delicious and actually makes matzah more palatable. You take matzah, break it up into pieces and soak it in water. Once it is kind of mushy, you squeeze out the water and place it in a buttered pan and fry or mix it up with eggs and a bit of salt.

Moscato is different from muscat. True they're related, but the slight effervescence is common to one type of moscato wine, where muscat it often short for 'muscat liqueur' made with a different varietal . They're a diverse range of varietals, and worth looking into.

I loved Matza. Always ate it with applesauce.

Coconut is commonly used a flour substitute during passover. :)

Emmy, uploading videos in the evening and making me want to eat past 7pm is NOT HELPING ME! But at the same time I have two babies so it's the only time I get a little time to myself every now and then, so if watching videos of you makes me crave food, it's worth it, because your channel is wonderful!

L'chaim (to life) is what we say instead of cheers. I'd love to use a good kosher moscato during Passover instead of the concord grape Manischewitz. It's like drinking grape Nyquil. The cakes use a lot of eggs to make them puff up during Passover so it definitely makes them taste a little different. Between all the eggs and the cardboard matza, your bowels are set on a roller-coaster! Did you make matza ball soup with the rest of it? Chag Pesach Sameach!
