Do you struggle with emotional spending or overconsumption? If so, what are you doing or plan to change? Also what's your phone 🔋on? I'm on 56%
@thecosmicbug

Definitely was something I struggled with. I would buy things to fill a void in myself but in reality i would regret buying and would be further sad and stressed about finances. It even caused marital issues. Talking to my husband and watching channels like yours have helped so much! (🔋 79%)

I recently had to buy a bunch of new clothing because I lost weight, and a lot of my stuff doesn't fit right. I spent like a half an hour longer than I would have had I didn't empty out my cart of everything I liked the vibe of. I also decided to split my closet by hot weather vs. cold weather to help manage what I buy, and why. It also didn't leave me feeling massively guilty.

I am glad to hear that you took action into getting yourself back on track. We all have a past and have done things we regret but what'd important is what you do after. You did not let it consume you. I'm proud of you and keep it going! YOU GOT THIS 💜

@@vvitch-mist20 You practiced balance and self control which is good! We do need to buy things in the world but you didn't overdo it. I don't even see an issue getting a few wants but sadly alot of people are mainly filling up their carts with wants and don't have the money. I do the same thing you do. Over 10 years ago, My economics teacher (in highschool) taught me a few things I still do till this day like reviewing my items 3 times before buying. MOST of the time i put things back but it helps! 💕

The trick for me was using self-compassion to navigate my desire for things. Instead of feeling shame for wanting things, I tell myself that every store, every website is designed to stoke your desire for things. It’s normal to go into Target and want everything. Then I can just sit with wanting things without impulsively buying them. When I was shaming myself for the wanting, I was MUCH more likely to buy the thing on credit because the wanting and the shame were too much to navigate. Of course we want all the things! That’s not the problem. Good luck everyone!

You said it perfectly!💕 It is VERY normal. Odd enough, It's hard for me to resist apple fritters and seafood. I am now allergic and it's been sooo hard and the fritters are expensive but I like them so much but me and bread/sugar have a HORRIBLE toxic relationship. @@candy2325literally same 😂. There’s so many days that I was stressed and would go put items in my cart on Amazon or other sites and there would be so many items I didn’t feel like making a decision on what to order. Within the next 2 days I go look at my cart and I’m like “I don’t really want or need any of this mess” 😂😂. So now even when I do want something I’ll leave it in the cart for at least a day and come back to see how I feel and make a more logical decision based off of budgeting and neutral emotions lol and the kicker is half of the time I end up not ordering whatever it is

I am also addicted to books. Amazon and my lack of self control easily fuels that addiction. I frequently put books on my Christmas list which helps. Part of the problem with a consumerist culture is that we think purchases gives us an identity. A gym membership doesn't mean I'm committed to my fitness goals. Being a reader means you actually read the books, merely purchasing them doesn't move the needle.

I am so glad you find this helpful. Just take it a day at a time and try to be mindful. YOU CAN DO IT! 💗 I know someone VERY close to me with a thing for perfume too. I couldn’t agree more! I have struggled with this too. I don’t think it’s anything to feel shame about because we all have our battles in life. The natural hair care products was my thing. I ended up getting so fed up I got locs so I wouldn’t feel like I needed all this stuff and to keep going to the store every time I needed to redo my hair. I think I’ll show how bad it was soon. But I know the feeling of “feeling” like you must get something when I never NEEDED all that stuff. I just liked trying new stuff cause I thought it may be better than the last but most of the time it wasn’t. I think being honest about things we go through can help more people than we know.

Until someone finds their "why" for being conscience with their finances, no amount of logic or "hacks" will make a difference. Like it was mentioned in one of the articles you highlighted, having control of what they spend money on may feel like the only control someone has in their life. I'm a little older (turn 46 this year) and I don't have any money saved for retirement and live paycheck to paycheck. This realization (late last year) gave me the motivation to start focusing on that. By the first quarter of next year I should be completely debt free, which is the first step from moving from a survival mode to a stability level. The rest of 2025 will be used to focus on building a sufficient emergency fund.

Its honestly so true, the only people impressed by your lavish things are people who can't afford it. People who can afford it, won't care about it. Emotional spending is understandable, but its important to find an alternative (altho there's no alternative to the dopamine shopping gives). Now, I'd rather spend on experiences...after all, how many cooking classes can I do in 1 hour? Making things, I love drawing, painting (bad at it but I enjoy it), sports like swimming, tennis. Finding something active that you enjoy can really help with the shopping. It'll give you REAL dopamine and you can always do it without spending a coin.

I can't tell you how often I have been made the butt of the joke or called cheap because I tell someone that a $63k car loan on a $80k income isn't an investment or how I would rather put the $100 of grubhub into my savings for a future expense. And yet, those same people would ask me with envy how I can afford a 2 week vacation overseas in cash or how I managed to take on no debt getting married while they're living paycheck-to-paycheck. I must be making more than them (I'm most certainly not) or someone must be footing the bill (sadly no). They seemingly forget all the times where I try to explain how their emotional spending and living in excess is the problem. It's amazing the things you can do when you focus on mindful living and stop chasing the high of instant gratification and peer approval.

This quote from that tiktok you included "If you do not have the money to purchase something you cannot afford it", while true is not the specific issue I had. I HAD the money which is what made me go "well, I mean I HAVE it so why not?" even when that mean "barely" having it and not saving a single damn dime. I'd be able to pay for necessities, have left over and just spend that leftover. It's a similar vein and a similar vicious cycle. The other comment talking about having "self-compassion" in navigating my desire for things is just so real. I would buy things, feel guilty, and yet to do it all over again. It took a whole lot of self reflection to acknowledge the truth in how much I was spending for reasons that should NOT have come before other things. So many things I didn't need, would wonder "...now why did I buy that. did I need that? Was it worth it? Did it even make me feel good?" Like you said, emotional literacy is SO important. It is not just about the financial literacy!! Edit: also, what you said about saving for the golden years so true!! I'm about to turn 30, I'm thinking hard about keeping a comfortable life for my mom and for future me. I'm planning on sticking around and I am planning to have her enjoying life as long as possible. Treats in life are wonderful, overcompensation is not that. Edit again: omg, I should really just wait til the end of the video to post my comments but you always have such good things to say I can't help myself LOL People in your circle cheering you on is also so real! I'm not exaggerating when I say your videos are changing my mindset, and possibly my LIFE. I grew up in poverty, and now that I have a little money I find myself buying stuff, overspending. The entire time I shop, I'm remembering when we used to go to stores growing up and I couldn't even buy one little set of plastic earrings or a cute top. But after buying too many books (I've gotten off BookTok!), and after watching your videos, I have a new perspective. I've already challenged myself to use what I have and not buy anything. Except to spend money to fix my cavities, because THAT is real self care and not all these eyeshadow palettes I regret buying! So, THANK YOU!

The first clip is so relatable. Like I might as well buy things I “deserve” right? Be broke and happy? But it’s not sustainable. I’ve deleted all shopping, social media, and food apps from my phone and I no longer carry my credit cards with me. It’s not much but it’s a start! Great video so far :)

Wonderful, well-rounded take on this much needed topic. Over the past few years I’ve learned to curb my spending- I had no choice, really. Now, when I think about getting a bunch of packages or bringing a bunch of bags in the house - I stop and think : How much management will those things require? Will I even use them? How will feel about them in 1-3 years? Will I even know where they are?! (I also struggle w/ organization) Now - I buy more impactful things I know I’ll use. While I’m not debt free yet, I plan to be soon and pray I never return to overconsumption and sabotaging my wealth and peace of mind, again. Phone is on 97% and your locs are gorgeous ☺️🥰

I’m a massive hoarder and I hate wasting money. I watch videos online about people doing Hauls and I get my enjoyment from that lol. Especially being a female, shopping and beauty can seem like a must have and it’s just too expensive. Years ago I was a spender and I used to buy a lot of makeup and clothes. Now I exercise, I have a $2 jump rope and I look amazing and feel more confident because of exercise which is almost free. Rather than wasting money on beauty products which don’t even make you look good.

I do the budgeting in our home & have my husband look at it when it’s done to make sure he’s on board. It took years to get him to this point bc money is a touchy place for him & sticking his head in the sand is what he prefers. Watching this video & seeing the woman with 100k in debt behind her husband’s back is wild to me. I look at not only my credit on a regular basis but look at my husband’s & daughters as well. I do it for security reasons but this right here is something I never even considered. Mind blown!

I am currently struggling to get out of debt and compulsive internet shopping, I try to handle it by practising self compassion, but also gratitude for all I already have. I have been hoarding stuff for years and my house is full of nice things that I forget I have, if I instead of buying new stuff go through my wardrobe and my collections of various things I can appreciate what I already have instead of constantly having to renew myself. I think a lot of people have stuff they never use or never wear, and facing all the things you already have can perhaps remind you also that whatever you buy now might just end up as more clutter, collecting dust in a corner..

In my favorite online shopping app (like most apps I guess?), there is a basket where I can put all the things that catch my attention and make me impulsive in the moment. There are like 250 items there. And every now and then I visit that basket to remove the things I no longer feel emotion with. Lol Some of the things in there annoy me. Im like"why are you herr? I dont need you" We dont always need what we think we want. Its ok to want things. Put it in your basket, give it 1 week or 2 and comeback to assess how you feel about it. Most of the time you dont actually need or want that things.

Everyone needs to allocate funds in their budget for guilt free spending, even if it's a super small amount. Be selective about your social circle. The weekly brunch and night club crowd will leave you bankrupt. Savings and investments goals should be prioritized before wants and even debt. Start super small. Social Security is expected to be insolvent by 2033. The safety nets for the working and middle classes are not being prioritized by Congress.

If you think you can't afford to save, you need to accept that you should be saving BEFORE spending on your wants as a non-negotiable. And if you realize you can't afford most of your wants after saving, hopefully you realize that buying your wants doesn't actually improve your life that much. OR if you're still unhappy, maybe that'll be the reality check to motivate you to find ways to make more money!

I think that some of the biggest emotional spending is fueled by boredom, and a lot of people have made shopping their hobby because of it. With much of online entertainment today being about shopping, it kind of cues people to buy things out of habit. My biggest piece of advice in this situation is to get a hobby, and one that isn't overly expensive. Also, to just be careful not to use this new hobby as an excuse to overbuy supplies or materials, prove to yourself that you're dedicated before investing too much money into it. But that's it, really, I think people just need something else to dedicate their energy to and a healthier topic to consume videos about online.

I save money on the side so when I do go on a shopping spree I can put it on my credit card and pay that card off the second I get the bill and help improve my credit score. I love shopping and I love clothes and sometimes I do make little dumb mistake purchases, but that’s what they are. Dumb purchases. it never goes into the realm of actually getting into such bad debt. Even with my view on shopping I can’t understand why people put themselves in these situations were they’re stressed about debt.

I’ve had a few rough days, including being denied for an apartment I really wanted bc one of the girls doesn’t have a credit score in America. I spent like, a few hundred dollars on random shit, desperately grasping for some control. I’m sick of it. I don’t have any debt other than student loans, I don’t spend *technically* past My means but I have all of 1.5k in savings. But I spend more than I need to on shit I don’t need. I have zero interest in becoming wealthy. I don’t want to be rich at all. Frankly I despise capitalism to my core. I just want to be able to afford my bills and exist comfortably and independently. Reminding myself that big corporations are the only ones that benefit from my bad choices is something I need to keep in mind.
