The Yellowstone Universe and The Batman are both popular media properties that also capture the essence of two different political movements in the U.S. today. If we look at our politics from a bird’s eye view, perhaps we can find some empathy and understanding of how different environments and situations can cause people to espouse different politics. Yellowstone paints the picture of a world that is in constant struggle with nature, one where man is nothing more than a part of nature, no matter what we do. It’s reminiscent of Republican politics in many ways, the idea that there is not enough to go around, and we all are fighting each other for resources, that government and modernity are corrupt and problematic by nature and that we are not good or deserving of things. That’s why it often seems like Republican government is working against the government at large, because they don’t see it as being useful. They crave an unfettered freedom, much like their ancestors did. On the other hand, in the world of Batman, the world around us is decaying, cities and communities are dying from corruption, and we will never beat it. People deserve to be saved, but it won’t happen by those in power. We have to save ourselves and as many as we can with community and build a world without corruption by being ever vigilant against it. The real tension is between security and freedom and the identities therein, and we're all trying to find the balance. But each side paints a portrait of constant and never-ending struggle, of war either between different groups of people or between the general populace and the elite. No matter how you slice it, both sides only offer us a world that is in constant struggle. Neither offer a path that is practical nor truly deals with our real problems. But ultimately these ideas are born of specific situations and realities, and if we look at both sides with an empathetic and non-biased vision, we can begin to understand how and why people think the way that they do. Rather than living in separate bubbles and worlds, we can look at one another with an understanding of what we all truly desire.
