Empire Total War: Naval Tactics (HD)(ep. 1) 

After 5 minutes, all my naval engagements look like a gigantic clusterfuck.

The best way to do all your Naval battles is to have one Admiral flagship V rate and send him in to disable the sails of the whole Fleet by doing flanking maneuver at max range, you keep the enemy at max range until his sails are disabled and work your way down this whole Fleet and then come up from behind and attack each ship making them surrender. This way you can sell off all of his combat ships in repair all of his trade ships and use those to make money and more than one way

In Empire total war Navies are extremely useful for transport, blockading trade routes which gives your foe less income and thus a smaller army, and they are needed to protect trade convoys that are going to places like the Ivory coast.

British/French or Prussian campaigns would be unreal, love your vids man can't wait to see the campaign, no matter what it turns out to be!

Nice video man, I've been too used to hand to hand land battles form the older total war series and couldn't quite get naval battles but this really helped!

Actually, If you disable "Fire at will" then you can still move but you cant return fire since your crew is putting out the fire aboard.

I live for ship combat in these games. I should've been Admiral Nelsons first mate lol Using the wind is very important also. The heavy first rate ships are so fucking powerful. Love watching them fire volleys and then watch them hit the enemy ship. Just ripping chunks of wood out and splintering pieces off left and right. That rocket ship is very nice. If you had 2 in this battle it would've been over 50% faster I bet. Since the AI is just ridiculous lol and got tangled up. Anybody ever use the carronades? Small ships with huge guns and short range? Hit and run attacks with it maybe? A good early ship maybe?

@ Junkiddo: you need to select them all to move them as a group. Handy to short-key them (ctrl+ number). Makes selecting them all a bit easier, especially in the heat of battle.

A tactic I tried when my (AI) opponent was using the standard line astern/column formation was to form my fleet (about 3 3rd or 4th rates and several brigs) into a crescent (envelop) and I sailed them right at the enemy. At the last minute I got them to break formation and do a 90 degree turn all at once, allowing them all to fire broadsides at once, devestating the lead ship in the enemy formation.

@TheEpicBrit But not during the Netherlands' Golden Age ;) Britain's rise to power was basically slightly after the starting date of Empire - Total War, when the Dutch naval supremacy was slowly taken over by the Brits in a series of wars and political events.

one question... i've tried this famed tactic known as "crossing the T" made famous by Nelson... but when i try it it works for a while but then one of my ships rams an enemy ship and then the formation goes all to hell... i found a tactic where if you put ur armada into two lines and have them run parallel to each other with the enemy line in the middle works effectively in surrounding and annihilating the enemy... your thoughts?

line of stern is a sound tactic but an experienced player can easily smash up a line of stern. the best thing to do wen an enemy deploys in a line is to intersect his line perpendicularly at more than one point. your ships will be firing both their broadsides along the length of the enemy's ships (a raking shot). if u have the wind guage this tactic works every single time.

Naval battle depends who fight it will go during battle ,i see that things can change fast depending on the situation,the best way its be simple tatics,and who plays this kind of games like medieval totar war,can use some tatics here!

Just a question, have you played Napoleon Total War? It was on sale a while ago and got it, but the range of my ships is nowhere near this huge. Was it patched in both games or is this some historical thing?

yea ramming is common... thats where your micromanagement kicks in. and that's exactly what Lord Neslon did at Trafalgar anyway, he crossed the Franco-Spanish fleet with 2 lines. but one thing everyone should keep in mind is that crossing the T is useless when your fleet is sailing downwind (i.e against the wind).

I used is, but I think after flanking round behind them I had my line break off in to 2 then go back round, had 2 lines on either side and perform a double broadside

I guess in some ways. It's not supposed to be all Assassins creed 3 with unrealistic reload times and the magical ability to sail against the wind. Some things suck like how the ships have magical turning brakes and suck but other things I liked a lot.

What formations/tactics do you recomend with a full fleet of ships? I mean 14 ships seems like alot to put into one line. I have already tried spliting them into three lines and was thinking if 2 lines would be better at all?

i would have positioned slightly differently, i like 2 columns one far right one far left, if they had their fleet as they were i could have gotten them in the middle. then just fire from both sides destroying them. the rocket ship was a very good idea though very useful as long as they are out of range of the enemy. also i was wondering what computer do you have? ive been allowed to buy one computer by my parents and i want to make sure ETW wil work on it. how much it costs and wher i can buy.

In real life the navy is a vital part of any war, WW2 for example. My main issue with total war is that the navy doesn't do all it can do and as a result people neglect it. You will find most you tubers neglecting a navy but if they did this irl they would lose the war.

I would ask to see a Russian campaign since really I've seen only a select few Russian players here and there, but never the Russian campaign (heard it was exceptionally tough). Anyhow, hope to see more soon ^_^

@cubosensaj no the Dutch flag was actually first orange white blue until the Napoleonic period, it was changes by napoleon to red white blue (holland was a part of france the bastards) it was stupid of creativity that they made it red white blue

It's all about more guns! More guns mean more damage! As Britain get a lot of forth rates and engage the enemy in pairs of 2 during battle ( one boards and one pounds the other side) you win easily the way he does it means lot of money wasted ( in game) with poor results

Once i had a bunch of admerals and third rate, third v. third and second, and my 4 admerals v. their last admeral. I boxed him in, and i swear he (the admeral) saluted me and was then epicly pwned with 1 chain, one ball, and two grape. But it ruined the moment, the balls that missed kinda blasted each other and i nearly lost an admeral

Wind was fine for AI at 2:50 AI is just bad. When you were on a beam reach initially (wind at a 90 deg angle) it would have been beneficial to 'try' to put the enemy on your port (downwind) side. Being upwind of your opponents gives you a maneuverability advantage.

how do u move ur ships so seamlessly? wen i play they always slow down if there is a ship in front of them. Do i have to move them all individually?

i vote brittish, or if not the netherlands or spain. just cuse of spains big fleet. thanks im not very good at sea battles, but i love em. get 2 massive ships (admrials 1st and heavy first) vrs as many little sloops n brigs as the enemy can get, thats fun.

Man, I have watched these over and over again and I still feel like a complete incompetent in Naval battles. Does not make any sense to me. Keep watching them and hopefully someday these will click. Plus Auto on VH/VH is hugely costly to me, which is the reason I keep watching these.

i find it funny how the ship rockets are alot more usefull than land rockets. the land rockets are almost completely useless.

guys, questions u are asking are noob questions, just try out the us navy and se how good they are, and try boarding ships as well, it depends on how much u want it :P i vote for sweden as well
