If you really want too know, this older module has incredible sounds yeah its old,but this here little bad ass was used in a ton of productions. And it can still be added to your arsenal. For all the younger people it may suck because it doesnt sound as clear and crisp as your plug ins, but it has a warm sound to it that cant be easily replaced.... Thats why they are still used though on a limited basis..With a little programming or editing of the attacks and decays and a good FX BOX and you have a really nice sounding orchestra. I wish E-MU still made hardware....

I just ordered a Proteus 2. Now I’m seeing there’s a Proteus 2 ORCHESTRAL version. Should I of gotten that one? Mine doesn’t say orchestral on the front.
@LittleRichard1988
@LittleRichard1988 7 месяцев назад
@@50CJAZZ The Proteus/2 that says Orchestral has an updated firmware. Other than that it's exactly the same as the original Proteus/2. The main reason for Emu putting the word "Orchestral" on later Proteus/2's was so that it was easier to differentiate it from the other Proteus moduels, the same thing for later Proteus/1's that have the word "Pop/Rock".

@GH_EmotionalGuy

@@LittleRichard1988 Jim Lang also used Proteus 3 World (most notably the Waterphone patch) to perform the film score (along with John Carpenter) to In The Mouth Of Madness. Heck, even James Newton Howard used that module [Proteus 3 World] for his score to Falling Down, mostly with the Waterphone patch and the Spirit Catch patch.

Not surprised. Believe it or not literally COUNTLESS productions have actually used this. From children's productions to cheesy karaoke instrumental remakes to video games. MANY people have heard the sounds from the proteus 2 but just don't know the module itself
@LittleRichard1988
@LittleRichard1988 Год назад
@@exoticcar5482 I bought one last year and cheesy karaoke remakes/public domain music arrangements is exactly the sort of thing I use these sound modules for. But just before I came across this video I thought these orchestral instruments were Roland samples from the SRJV Orchestral expansion board for the Roland JV/XP/XV keyboards and modules.
@LittleRichard1988
@LittleRichard1988 8 месяцев назад
This video was how I discovered the Emu Proteus/2 sound module and found out this sound module was what was used on so many TV adverts and TV programs through the 90s and even the early 2000s. Although a few years before I came across this video I already worked out these sounds were synthesized on some sort of sound module but back in the day these sounds were realistic enough to fool most people into thinking the music on all these adverts was played with real instruments but now with today's high end Kontakt libraries it's nearly impossible to tell weather it's midi synthesized or if the composer had a budget to hire an actual orchestra. But the bottom line everyone who was around in the 90s and early 2000s will have heard the Emu Proteus/2 without even realizing it! Today everyone hears high end Kontakt libraries such as Albion one and Ark one and even East West Quantum Leap without even realizing it but with this sound module like all other sound modules once you hear it and recognize it you can't unhear it!

I have all 3 of the original emu Proteus Modules (1-pop-rock, 2-orchestral, 3-world) Bought them brand new as they were released in the late 1980's. Although dated by todays standards, they were amazing back in their day. The Proteus 2-Orchestral module CAN sound really good actually but you have to put some time and effort into what you are recording with it. I recorded the Theme to "The Last Starfighter: with it just to see what it could do, did that way back in 1998, it came out great except for the trumpet sounds, the trumpets are good until you play higher notes, then the synthyness of them becomes very apparent. (see - Emu Proteus 2xr Orchestral - The Last StarFIghter Theme ) for my Emu Proteus 2 version of the Last Starfighter Theme. I also did several tunes with the Proteus 1 module as well. Search RU-vid for "Mystic Frequencies" or go to my channel if you would like to see what these old modules can really do with a little bit of time and effort. Yes, I Love Logic Pro and my Korg Triton, but Im truly an old school MIDI guy otherwise, I even still own my Roland JX8p, Kawai SX240, etc… lol Interesting thing is that my Proteus 1 Module is so old that it does not have any factory ROM demo song, but the second Proteus 1 I got years later, does have it, not sure why though. The proteus 3-World module also have a demo in it. Thanks for posting this factory demo, I had forgotten all about it!

I worked at Guitar Center in '92 and we had a display with all of the Proteus modules along with the ProCussion. What I thought was cool about them is that the Sub Outs will also work as audio merge inputs, so we were able to daisy chain all the module's outputs from one into the next until the last one went into the monitor speakers.
@MysticFrequencies

zibbybone Oh wow! I never knew that, and here i am using 6 channels on my mixer for the 3 modules when I could use just 2 lol! Amazing how I'm always learning something new about something old!
@zibbybone
@zibbybone 10 лет назад
DMC12guy I think the sub outs work like an insert with send and receive. If you plug a regular unbalanced cable about 80% of the way right before the cable "locks" into the jack, it will "return" external sound into the main mix. Check out Page 10 of the original Proteus manual. If you don't have the manual, just Google "Emu Proteus PDF" and the first result will be the manual.

Dude, no amount of reverb/chorus/phaser, whatever you wanna throw at it, will make this thing sound good, it will always sound like plastic :) I'm not kidding man, the SB AWE64 which is from the same time as this, sounded just as "good". Back then I didn't know this module, so I never believed Creative when they said it was just as good, because in my mind the professional stuff coul dnever sound that bad, but i guess i was wrong, it could. Even for back then this sounds awful

I bought this module in 2022 and don't regret buying it. This was realistic sounding by the standards of the 90s but by toay's standards it's on par with VST instruments like DSK Virtuoso ( which actually sourced some of it's samples from this module ) and Sonatina which sounds a bit more higher resolution. This sound module is still usable for hobbyists and still usable for producing backing tracks for Christmas carols. And Kontakt only sounds really good if you can afford to buy high end orchestral libraries for it like Ark 1, Spitfire, Metropollis and those pro level libraries are intended for professional use rather than hobbyists. The Kontakt Factory orchestral library isn't much better than this sound module to be honest.
