By the way, the rebuilding of Casita took months. They didn't make it obvious, but you can see that halfway through that sequence that the father's bee stings have already healed, WITHOUT the healing food. It's during this time they likely did most of the actual talking and healing.
It couldn’t have been that long, Mariano’s nose was still bandaged, so unless he broke it again offscreen it couldn’t have been more than a couple weeks or so.
One of the things I love about this movie is how most of the powers correspond to family roles, e.g. the strong one, the one who changes shape in order to please others, the one who knows everyone's business, the one who speaks uncomfortable truths and gets scapegoated, and so on. It's really clever.
The other one whose beauty will seal an alliance with a prestigious family. And the kid's gift, that is worthless for now, until the grandma can exploit
@@Angelikared Isabella is also the one that looks the most like Alma and so she tries to live the perfect life through her own granddaughter. Mariano looks a lot like Pedro did, so he should be perfect for Isabella(only in Alma's ming though as Isabella hates him) to marry. Alma is so toxic until you learn that she is just stuck in the past and hasn't lived past seeing her husband be murdered in front of her.
This is the story of millions of Colombian people. We lost everthing. Disney thanks to show to the world our Colombian breaks, hurts and pains... also our love, music, color and amazing culture
@@carn9507 it can be both tho,, it’s clear by how much research went into encanto that at least the team behind it did want to create an authentic story. Disney might’ve been seeing it as money bags, but the people making it do spend a ton of time working on it, and it is a very personal story for a lot of them. It doesn’t have to be one or the other
@Carnivius While I understand what you mean about, I feel like I'm doing the absolute minimum. As an black American I would like to see an animated movie where the character that's supposed represents me actually stays human for the entire thing. But that being said, we also need technology to Disney is a business period, and it's a business run by old cisgender white men. Some money is going to be the way that we force them to actually put the representation out there. Because if we don't support the movie because we don't think it's enough. They'll turn that around and be like, "See, we gave you what you said you wanted; you didn't support it." And then using that to justify not giving us more. And I'm in no way saying that we shouldn't call out the fact that they are doing the bare minimum. We definitely need to. And that can be with supporting other companies that are giving us more period when they are doing the right thing. But we also need to acknowledge that it's there and it's available. This is a movie where all the cast is Hispanic and the majority is actually of Colombian descent. They also took cast and crew to Columbia to do more research to make sure that what was being put out was authentic. I'm just saying let's not throw out the baby with the bathwater. But let's still throw out the bathwater
@@carn9507 You're generalising Disney as a company. Yes Disney only cares about money (just like Nintendo), but the hundreds of people behind the *movies* simply want to tell stories. The animators, storyboard artists, musicians and everyone else had one goal in mind. To tell a compelling story and showing the world the Colombian Culture. So keep in mind there is always more than one side to things. They people inside the company always fight for more representation, here it was for Luisa being a big, muscled woman. One day the higher ups will be changed to new management and hopefully things will finally get better. Sexual assault happens everywhere in every industry. Disney should have a policy in place for such things. Like even on The Voice we hear about assault. It has to be handled better.
The ppl who worked on this actually went to a real Columbian town and community and they talked to all the citizens to get their expert advice from them the clothes food architect music and even places plants and animals and customs
The moment that shows the ENTIRE THEME is when Isabella gets startled, pops a bunch of flowers in her hair, and Abuela pulls out the single white one. Even when startled she has to be perfect, and she has to show herself in ways that OTHER people like.
I read that Disney thought kids would want Isabella dolls because she was beautiful and perfect. But there was more of a demand for Luisa dolls because she was super strong. They actually had to make more Luisa dolls.
I'm 50, and something I've noticed over the past generation (in America, at least) ... girls and young women fantasizing not about being the most popular or pursued ... but rather possessing INDEPENDENT STRENGTH. I have to imagine this has a lot to do with how women in America truly are independent now, but the public world remains a PHYSICAL threat to them in a way that men don't fully process. An alternate, related female fantasy is the "doting bodyguard" ... a male protector who is letting HER call the shots ... the merman in "Shape of Water", Danaerys' dragons, Wanda's Vision, even Bumblebee in the last Transformers movie.
Quick google search pulled up nothing so I can't verify that, but it sounds unusual. Little girls still very do much like pretty (in general. Let it Go dress transformation sold Elsa dolls like nothing else!). But there's nothing wrong with liking strong too.
@@carlotta4th Is Elsa a character that is "popular and pursued"? No, she has independent strength and retreats from a world that can't handle her power
Disney missed the point so much in the merch... Not only Luisa is great and of course people would want her dolls, but also if they wanted to sell Isabela dolls they should have made dolls with her new look and not the perfect one, because little kids can understand seeing the movie that Isabella was unhappy pretending to be perfect and that the look at the end is who she really is, and if a kid likes Isabela why would they want the doll from when she was unhappy???
This movie follows the typical south american style of "Magical Realism", famous for instance for the novels of Gabriel Garcia Marquez. It combines the realism of a small Colombian village with the magical impossibility of a grandma that admits to being wrong about something.
04:51 One way to look at Isa is to look at this moment. She's saying exactly what Alma says like 30 seconds later. Her words and opinions have been molded by her Grandma. Of course, this isn't bad, but it shows how much her grandmother has influenced her and groomed her into the perfect golden child who has to uphold the family and the family image.
The outfits are colour-coded. Abuela wears red Bruno wears green (Opposites) Pepa's side wears yellow (Though Dolores has a red skirt, showing her closeness to Abuela) Julietta's side wears blue. Well, almost all of Julietta's side. Isabella wears a pinkish-lavender. While Dolores at least has clear distinction between the red and yellow, Isabella is completely molded by Abuela. Until after her revelation, when her outfit becomes a deep blue colour.
(24:55) "She's only thinking about herself" hold on, that is actually a good thing. up til that moment, she was NOT thinking about herself. granted, we haven't really seen it that much in the movie, but she was never doing things for herself. she made flowers because it was needed. We never saw her actually being selfish. she had only two interactions with Maribel up to this point in the movie, the hair in the face, and the "I don't want a word out of you", both can be boiled down to "the family needs this to go flawlessly, so don't screw it up".
Bruno was 'Evil Green' in the 'We Don't Talk about Bruno' song because people were portraying him as a villain when really all he was doing was telling people prophecies they didn't want to hear. His prophecy stones are probably green for the same reason, not because they are evil but because they are unwelcome.
Also - Mirabel's glasses and the nursery (esp at the start of that song) also were green, perhaps indicating in a more subtle way her unspoken role as acting family scapegoat (and connection between her and Bruno). I love that Disney is playing with it's own tropes (green = evil/bad) as part of the visual storytelling.
Either that or because green is the color of the MCU's Time Stone. Camilo (the shapeshifter) portrays Bruno in that song as looking scary, but we should also realize that the last time he saw Bruno, he was probably pretty young - he seems to be just a couple of years older than Maribel, and she was 7 when Bruno disappeared. Bruno's reputation as being creepy/scary had probably been pretty well established by then, so that's how he remembers him. Also, Camilo's kind of a troll.
24:54 "She really only thinks about herself." Right after she mentioned the exact opposite circumstance by making the family happy at her personal expense and detriment. XD
The actress Stephanie Beatriz (who voices Mirabel) apparently recorded the song "Waiting On A Miracle" while she was IN LABOR. Holy moly, she's awesome!
In the song "dos oruguitas" or "two Caterpillar" the lyrics say "Hay que partir y construir su proprio futuro" Which means "needs to break and build your own future" So the house needs to break to creat a better future or like how the Caterpillar have to break out of the cocoon to became a butterfly "or a better versions of themselves"
What I enjoy so much about this movie is that the plot has rather low stakes - like the world is not gonna end or anything. It's mainly just this family and how their behaviours affect each other...
I mean, to be fair, the Encanto that the entire village lives in, IS their little world. There were bad people outside the mountains. And they've been isolated, having to deal with their own problems.
@@Bubble170 Well that depends on what the character deems is high stakes. It depends on their world view, and what they see as dangers. It's high stakes to them, because THEIR whole world is in danger. Lion King is Pride Rock Inside Out is just Riley Moana is her Island and the Ocean Frozen is the Kingdom Encanto is the Encanto Toy Story is just the small group of toys that stay together 101 Dalmations is just the household, with the puppies and all.
@@DAMIENDMILLS yeah but none of them are bigger than Encanto is my point. The comment implied that other Disney films have the entire world at stake when usually it’s the same level of stakes as Encanto in my opinion, from the perspective of the character the stakes are always huge.
The song has a lot of meaning, especially if you are Colombian. It talks about growing up, transforming yourself, adapting and growing, especially when violence has touched your life as it has happened to all of us in Colombia. Also, for us, butterflies, especially yellow ones, are a symbol. Our Nobel Prize winning writer, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, uses them as a symbol of the resilience of the people of my country, and how we transform pain and sadness into something better and more beautiful. How we have overcome violence and pain to grow as people, as a country, and to move forward in spite of everything.
I don't think Dolores can control her hearing. She's always talking in a whisper, and claps her hands really quietly and we see her cover her ears at times.
Which is why I don't understand why her room wasn't a soundproof sanctuary for her. But I guess when I think about it, everyone's room is there to train their abilities. Antonio's jungle allows him to be among all the animals and get to know them and how to best use them. Isa's room is a place for her to practice her skill growing things, though it seems like Abuela Alma molded her into someone who just grows pretty flowers, because it's obvious she can grow whole TREES. (Her gift would have been much more useful growing food that the village needs, but she is the first grandchild, the eldest, and like a lot of us first grandchildren she is more spoiled and doted on than the ones who come later.) Bruno's room was obviously a space to have visions, and I think the fact it was so hard to get _to_ that specific area where he has them keeps him from just using that gift all the time. Instead of just casually using that power, he has to _work_ to have a vision. Those are the only rooms where we see the inside, of course, so we can only speculate about the others. But if Delores' room wasn't a soundproof area for her to get away from all the noise, that's just mean.
@@Skye_Writer When asked, apparently the film makers said that her room is soundproof, but since she heard people sleeping, I guess she gets up at night sometimes.
What I love the most about this movie is that there is no villain. The Abuela may be an antagonist for a time, but in general, this movie is about a family with problems, trying to cope with them. No super complicated, no last minute villains, no plot twist that takes the movie to another direction, is all about the family.
The Bruno's green is Disney's "Go Away Green". Which is the color in the parks for things they don't want you to notice. AKA, we don't talk about Bruno.
what is it about Pepe & Félix's offspring that make them the perfect information gathering team - Dolores hears the secrets, Camilo can infiltrate anywhere, and the whole animal kingdom can be spies for Antonio.
@@b.f.2461 oh, I agree. Isabella and Luisa alone can fight off armies (I wonder if Antonio would risk his animal friends). I just thought it was funny that one side of the family seems designed to accrue informaition.
WHAT? Totally disagree when you guys said “She only think about her self” referring to Isabella. Isabella never allow herself to actually think for herself. She was so pressure to be this “GOLDEN CHILD” everyone wanted her to be. She even says it “I didn’t want to marry him, I was doing for the family”. Image even marrying a man you don’t love just because your family is expecting for you to do so, abuela basically chose Mariano for her. So she was in this huge bubble of perfection letting her desires, dreams and everything she truly wanted aside.
@@a.g.demada5263 Even at the family dinner, with the flowers popping into her hair and one being "wrong", you could tell she wasn't interested in marrying him - but it's so easy to play off, thanks to Dolores adding the comment about "he wants five babies", as being scared of having that many babies! This movie improves SO MUCH on rewatch when you can see all the foreshadowing they put in - and it's an amazing movie to begin with!
@@kristinw2600 yes, I think she was afraid because of rhe five babies but when Camilo turns into Mariano she didn't like it. I also noticed during the first song, she didn't pay attention to Mariano when he appears
When they said that she only thinks about herself I was like "Wow... what a way to completely miss the whole point", because the point was the Isabela hadn't been thinking about herself until that moment, she had been too worried about always being perfect for the family and after creating the cactus is the first time she starts doing things just for herself even if they aren't perfect. I would have understand they thinking she only thinks about herself before, but saying it in THAT scene was baffling.
@@ladyorapma I give them a pass on this one because they said it right at the *start* of the in-universe reveal, where Isa spells out how she was always driven by pressure too, and Mirabel is all “oh yeah, I get it now”. There were hints earlier, like the white flower and the “five babies” comment, but (probably by design) those hints were easy to misinterpret as something else up until that point.
I remember watching this and finding one of the most expressive characters in the movie was the Casita and thinking the Casita was the spirit of Pedro. It looks after the family and protects them when the house falls apart like how Pedro protected the family before he died. It would also explain why Maribel didn’t get a room as Maribels gift is taking care of the family, like Pedro, so her ’room’ is the entire house.
Dos Orguitas is the Oscar song. And even though Bruno is the number one hit in the land, this one hits SO HARD. Two caterpillars in love, but they have to separate in order to chrysalis. Think the legend of the Butterfly Lovers in China.
It's my favourite song from this movie. It makes me emotional the way I expect from a Disney movie and it has so much meaning. It ties together all the strings on why Abuela became the way she is now and yet shows the other side of hers, in a time where she was just as full of wonder and hope as her grandkids are now.
I've got "We don't talk about Bruno" fever 😭 ooh and also many might know this but the part where they all song their lines together in the end is called "Madrigal"
So, I've heard this go around about Bruno's green, that is his main colour is the Disney's "Go Away Green", a colour they supposedly designed to keep visible things hidden or hard to focus on. They would use this at Disney parks to hide structures, staff doors and other parts that would be considered displeasing to the eye. Bruno is not the run away family member, but the hidden one. Disney used a colour that is distinctly him but also makes him hard to find. If you look carefully in promotional posters, you may even spot him with his hood up and looking away... well it's either Bruno or Hernando, I'm not sure.
One of the things that I’ve noticed (that no one else has commented on) is that right before Waiting For A Miracle, when her family goes to take a photo, she doesn’t move. She doesn’t even try to get into the photo, and if you look carefully at the other family photos, she’s not in any of them. Meaning, someone, likely Abuela, asked her to step aside before. Her missing out on family photos was purposeful and not accidental like it seems.
Everyone loves the we don't talk about Bruno song, but I think Surface Pressure is so much better. Also this was the first animated movie to cover ALL textures and styles of hair because they have the animation technology now.
I really like that the town helps rebuild the house as repayment cause I excepted it to be really cliche and as soon as they made up the house would rebuild itself or something
My theory about this is that Mirabel was / is intended by the Magic to take over after her grandmother as the caretaker of the house / candle. Remember the grandmother herself has no special powers except that her love for her husband ignited the candle. That's why Mirabel's "door" is the Front Door of the house. (Ah. Posted b efore I watched your reaction :) )
@@beardedgeek973 idk, to me to just seemed very obvious that she took her place as the head of the family at the end. Guess I haven't really looked into other peoples opinions too much. Just everyone I know that has seen the movie thinks the same thing.
At first, Mirabel was so happy for Antonio, her cousin (9:10), and his gift of talking to animals (8:39) (all thanks to the love she feels for him), but when the rest of her family takes the family photo without her (9:24), her smile...disappears (9:22)
I think Luisa's emotional breakdowns were meant to be less comedic than they kept portraying it. I mean, me as an audience can decide how to react to wjat a character does. But it seems like all her moments where she showed weakness, it's played out like a funny scene meant to be laughed at. Not every moment, but most of them.
I absolutely love this movie, The family Madrigal and We don't talk about Bruno our the only 2 songs I didn't cry... The message of this movie is incredible!
I love how they hit on 3 different cultural weak spots of looking out for the family: 1. The expectation to just be strong and whiteknuckle it. 2. The expectation to be perfect and do what makes the family happy. 3. Disowning the disappointment and keep them out of sight to preserve tha family's honor.
Speaking of talking animal comics, there's a classic Far Side comic where an inventor was able to invent a dog translator but all they say was "Hey! Hey! Hey!"
One of Robin Williams last roles was as the voice of a dog Simon Pegg wished could talk. He didn't wish for it to be smarter though so he just constantly asks for treats and recommends that he hump his girlfriend.
In the song we don't talk about Bruno, did you notice Bruno was on the balcony in Delores's room while she was singing her part at the beginning of the song
@@corvacks8924 nope its Bruno, Camilo shape shifts he has no reason to sit up there and dance as bruno the whole time waiting for his part. Camilo doesn't even stay as Bruno during his part if the song he switches back each time he stops talking
I think Mirabels powers is the house itself is her power. It doesn't start cracking until Mirabel feels left out and jealous. It repairs when she gets concerned and runs off to find help. Later, it starts again during the dinner. Once again, because she's feeling a negative emotion. We never see the rest of the family talk to the house, or have it answer them. It does help them and guide them. But that's seemingly it. Finally, Mirabel lets her emotions out and the house breaks. But Mirabel is the only one the house helps. It also protects her as it's dying. She revives the magic with the new house they built together in the end.
I've watched this movie so many times and I stupidly never connected the fact that _the grandmother doesn't have a gift, either._ Y'all saying Meribel is leading the family in the new front door made me realize that she probably didn't receive a gift from the miracle because she's eventually supposed to take over for the grandmother. Huh.
her door was the whole house, that's why she didn't get one inside the house, also did you notice the umbrellas were the color of the columbian flag. i love this movie, my daughter who just turned 7 yesterday loves this movie, she watched it before me with her class, and one night in bed i decided to watch it myself and i loved it. we don't talk about Bruno is my 1st favorite song, and then my 2nd is Surface Pressure. Dolores the one who can hear things i like her part in the song we don't talk about Bruno, and then i love Camilo's part where he has the power to change into other people, i like his part the best, he's one of my favorite characters. one of the best modern Disney movies today, and that's coming from someone who grew up with classic Disney movies back in the 90' which are STILL the best ones.
Ah yes, having to migrate for a sociopolitical conflict while losing a family member to end up living in a house crumbling down and filled with rats with a family in wich all members have anxiety. TRULY THE LATINAMERICAN EXPERIENCE! Yours truly, another latino who loved this film.
Simone is only half right about Green being a Villain Colour, half right because Purple always accompanies Green. Bruno doesn’t wear any Purple, but Abuela does! Both Abuela and Bruno are made out to be seemingly antagonistic, but neither wear both colours, so in the end they’re both fairly neutral.
The fact so many people who watch this movie talk about absolutely crying non stop at Luisas surface pressure song makes me so happy that it wasn't only me who felt that way, yet it also makes me feel so heartwrenched that's how so many people felt, that they couldn't stop crying because they related so much, and one of my absolutely favorite stories is of a mother who was watching this with her daughter and while she was in tears she turned to her daughter to see how she related to it and she saw she was just enjoying the song, in that moment she realized her daughter didn't have the same burdens and trauma she did, she said the cycle ended with her, and that was heartwrenching and heartwarming
I liked that you said “they” about little human under the bed. As a Bigender human I get put into the female thing a lot and it hurts. I found it most respectful of you to say “they” until you know how they feel about such things
It's Columbia, they got a lot of coffee. I don't know if all the small children there are hyper-caffeinated though. I kinda want to see La Familia Madrigal as a super-hero team. Mirabel's power is the ability to stop or slow time, plus reality control / illusions, and mind control to force others into a full musical number to explain their feelings, *plus* altering their memory so they think they just had a conversation with her afterwards, all at the same time. It's pretty impressive. I also am a big fan of Dolores' little "chirp" noises. "She just thinks about herself." In that moment, Isabela was realizing that her powers were vastly more flexible than she'd ever thought, her entire life. She doesn't just make things pretty, she might be able revolutionize all agriculture. That's kind of a big deal, she's having a huge personal revelation here. Meanwhile, her annoying little sister wanted to hug her right then for some reason.
5:52 I'mm getting RPG flashbacks...I once played in a superhero game, where i was the only one without any powers...but evenually it turned out that mine were...unobrusive, hard to notice, passive/unconscious powers, that I had no control over, but that turned out to be mighty in the course of time. I wonder if that's what's going on with this lady.
24:15 Congrats... you just figured it out. there is so much confusion about this but its so obvious. Abuela wont' live forever and Mirabella is the new matriarch. The Casitia is crumbling due to the fighting of the two matriarchs and the casita's split loyalty.
yas, such a good film! :) and so many tiny little details you catch rewatching, like when isabella makes flowers in her hair at the thought of 5 children her Abuela removes the white one because it doesnt match perfectly. Or the way Antonio is forcing the problems out in the open for Mirabel dragging her into the light repeatedly (hence why animals put the thing together) or how during "we dont talk about bruno" during the part isabella tells mirabel she doesnt want a word out of mirabel dolores is actually singing how she hears bruno in the walls. And I could talk at length about how Mirabels purpose is to tear the foundation of the family up as the miracle was based on grief and fear and it isn't until she finds out about all the issues from the pressure given to the family from abuela that she can break it down and rebuild based on a foundation of love and caring.
9:30 I mean, technically, she was asked when they said for "Everyone to come," but because of her own issues, she mentally excluded herself then, and no one seems to have cared enough to notice. After all, no one else was named to come for the photo either, they just didn't have ingrained in their minds that they aren't a part of "everyone."
I think Mirabel's gift was to see what others couldn't: Luisa stressed out, needing a hug; Isabela's obssession with perfection and helping her pass that, she was what they needed to open their eyes, accept themselves and each other, help and grow together... she was the new magic of the family
People keep saying it's terrible that the family left her out of that picture, but it's way more sad then that. It's easy to get lost in a crowd, any one of them could have thought she was on the other side of the group. She is quite small after all, but she's not so small that anyone need to be in charge of her. Those that MIGHT have noticed her missing wasn't going to stop the next step in this "perfect night" that they had been pressured into for weeks! Grandma called out, "We need a picture. Everyone come!" She CHOSE not to go, other people even passed her to get closer. SHE decided not to join her family for that photo. I don't think she felt worthy enough to be in that picture, or be a part of that family anymore. That's why she wasn't there.
If that one youtuber who makes “if ___ villains got charged for their crimes” made a video with the villain of this movie, I don’t think they would be charged with anything because they don’t do actual physical harm, just insults and blaming the house breaking on mirabel.
I know what that feels like I’m the oldest on my dad side of the family so whenever I would go round I was automatically babysitter to my younger cousins
If Mirabel, hypothetically, knew the Disney princesses, I like to think that when she said "I'm a princess too", she would do that pose at minute 18:56
couldnt find it anywhere in my city so i had to make it myself; was a disaster on first 2 tries. succeeded on third try, and ate 5 standing at the sink.
My single gripe with the movie was it felt too short.. like the house falling apart fully should of been at least the half way point/climax, not in the last little bit.. I wish it was bit longer so the fallout was felt more instead of "oh house fell, sorry for being too hard, time to rebuild"
Movie suggestions: "Demolition Man" (stars Sly Stallone, but is also the breakout role for newbie Sandra Bullock) "About A Boy" (stars Hugh Grant, Toni Collete, and child actor Nicholas Hoult) "Warm Bodies" (stars a young Nicholas Hoult as the romantic lead; great music) "True Lies" (Arnold Schwarzenegger & Jamie Lee Curtis") "Scent of A Woman" (Al Pacino got an Oscar for this) "The Last Wave" (1977, stars Richard Chamberlain) "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest" (Jack Nicholson, and a whole lot of people unknown then but have become famous since) "Ready Player One" (see how many cultural references you can recognize)
Loved the video! Are you guys gonna continue with the jurassic park/world series on the channel? I would love to see y'all's reaction to the rest of them!
