Coco is set in Mexico, Luca is in Itcaly, and Encanto in Colombia. . . . Disney sure's been making a lot of movies set in foreign countries recently. So naturally Poland is gonna get overlooked, because that country's most film-worthy subject is World War II. Though I sure love to imagine Disney having the balls for once to make a serious animated movie set during a war. I reckon Don Bluth would be able to make one in his sleep.

I do like that Mirabel doesn’t want a gift, she just wants to be helpful to her family and feel like she still has a place in it, so many times they would have gone with the protagonist wanting what the others have and getting the power in the end

@@tessao6088 It's a bit of a spoiler but it is revealed that Mirabel is the next Matriarch. She's the next person that bestows gifts to others and will be in charge of guiding and protecting the family like her grandmother does. Her grandmother doesn't have a gift either. She blesses the miracle and Mirabel almost sounds like Miracle. So when you tie that in Mirabel just by not having a gift is actually the most important because of her possible role as Matriarch.
@jongon0848
@jongon0848 2 года назад
The one thing I found super refreshing about Mirabel's character was that she is flawed, she is an outcast, & she doesn't get a power in the end. But that's ok because it wasn't about her finding a power, it was about her finally feeling like she was enough for her family. Also I absolutely adored how Mirabel's parents constantly defend her from her grandma and u can tell they have this unapologetic love for her no matter what.

Now see I feel like she DID have a power the whole time. Cause like the Grandma also didn't have a power she had the candle, the house, the miracle. But the house not giving Mirabel a miracle it seemed to me to be saying she doesn't have a room she gets the house. Mirabel is inheriting her Grandma's place as the head of the family building it as a new foundation as her successor. She even seems to have a much closer connection to the house than anyone. At least that's the message I got her power is the family.

I think it should have just ended with none of them having a gift. It would have been more realistic to real life, that we have to rely on ourselves and each other as humans and not some magical power that will fix everything. It still had the typical Disney-Pixar ending of "you need to make a sacrifice, just kidding here's some magic wish-tears and everything's back to normal". I feel like the movie wanted to do that but it would have been a risk. But I would have liked to see the movie end with nobody having gifts, instead they just integrate themselves and their talents into society as regular human beings, and then maybe there could be a prequel series on back when they did have their gifts. Instead we got "the main character doesn't have a gift, but she is special in her own way even though everyone else still gets to have one".
@nullvoid7402
@nullvoid7402 2 года назад
@@datsweggybruh8775 abuela and mirabel by extension don’t have gifts, they are simply the catalyst that is forging the family together INTO a family. The gifts were for the community as a whole and it showed they could make it even without the gifts so technically speaking, there’s no harm in them receiving them back if they don’t NEED them. ‘The miracle isn’t the gift, the miracle is you.’

@@Linnzy I think the one you're forgetting is Mother Gothel. I think Tangled was the last movie where we knew Gothel was the villain since the beginning. There was no twist. Her villain song, Mother Knows Best, sounds a bit Broadway in its reprise, but Dr. Facilier's Friends on the Other Side sounds evil throughout. I know that they were going a different direction with Mothers Knows Best, because the tone sounds soft and nice but her words are actually manipulative and rude. So that's interesting. "Go on. _Apologiiize_ " "I..... *deep breath* AM......SSSSSORRY. That your life is SOOOOO great!" I SWEAR TO GOD it was like I was seeing myself and my own older sister through Mirabel and Isabela in that scene. It's one of my favorites in the entire film. My older sister being like Isabela. I DON'T know how Disney does it, but they get family dynamics down REALLY well. Even all the way back to Lilo and Stitch. Isabela and Mirabel's relationship is perfectly done to the point where I bet a lot of other audience members looked at that scene and went "this is too realistic.". And even Luisa and Mirabel's relationship was ALSO well done as the two younger siblings in a dynamic of three, are usually who get along better, because the eldest is too busy having to be seen as the perfect one and the role model. Leaving room for the younger siblings to be more themselves. I WILL say I think Coco did the inner family conflict a BIT better-simply because it had a timer and the writing felt tighter for having that timer. If Miguel didn't reconcile, and get back to the land of the living, he was gone forever along with Hector by sunrise. Not to mention, I like that Miguel and his Abuela didn't have this HEART TO HEART moment, where she apologized for literally crushing his dream. Sometimes you don't need to have this big speech that's kinda cliche you can just have a character UNDERTSAND where the other was coming from by letting the animation do the speaking, and when Miguel and Mama Coco sang _Remember Me,_ when Coco was finally allowed to share memories of her father, you could tell the rest of the family FINALLY understood Miguel. And that can be more powerful than some speech. But that's really my only nitpick for Encanto-it wanders a bit too much, and the big reveal for why the Grandmother was the way she was, and her speech. It just felt a tad "been there done that" for me. Other than that, LOVED it.
@kbatraful

@@kbatraful Yeah Abuela Alma (Encanto) apologized, Abuela Helena (Coco) didn't, it would have been a nice touch, making the reconnection better, it also would have been nice to see that other members of the Rivera family felt preasured by Abuela Helena to follow the family business and not enjoying music, that is also something that I feel Encanto did better, showing that it wasn't just Mirabel that was affected by Abuela Alma's pressure.

I don't think Coco did the familial conflict as well because most every character outside of Miguel, Miguel's Abuela, Imelda, and Hector didn't get much characterization. Here, aside from Dolores and Camillo, everyone has pretty understandable personalities and relationships with each other, and that makes their representation of familial neglect amd generational abuse simultaneously more understandable and more aggravating(which it's supposed to be aggravating).

@takkycat
@takkycat 2 года назад
I 100% agree, and despite what some reviewers/reactors say, I like that the family got their powers back. Their powers weren't the problem, it was letting those powers be their sole definition of themselves to the point they were hurting themselves and others. The healthiest thing is finding a balance between being useful and personal fulfillment, not getting rid of the gifts all together. It also doesn't lift Maribel up to cut the rest of the family down. Their lack of powers don't make her more special nor does giving Maribel powers (another common complaint I hear) make her "just as good".

As a Colombian, I loved this movie. Right now is the biggest opening I've seen for a movie. Pretty much every cinema is only playing this film. And I loved it for the same reasons that you did. There's no evil villain who wants to destroy the town, or the house, or the family, the situation itself is the villain and it works really well. I think I like the third act more than you because I can relate to what happened there. Sadly violence like that is still happening in my country, and there are still people losing their homes and families because of it, and the movie shows that in a respectful manner. It made me cry, Disney not only show respect to Colombia regarding just their culture or music, but also their story, and I applaud the movie for that.

Plus, I loved his part in "We Don't Talk About Bruno" and scenes where we see him interacting with his family (and the community). The relationship between Mariano and Isabela in the beginning... I know she doesn't want to get married to him, and I'm glad they didn't try to push it any further. I honestly loved it. I found myself crying at parts because Mirabel's character is so relatable. Yet, whilst she feels not a part of the family she convinces herself that she does have a place. It definitely feels a lot of the time like they include her in places because they HAVE to, not because they want to. The distraught look on her face when the door fades when she's a child is heartwrenching. That is pure trauma right there. Especially when her Abuela promised everything and she didn't want to disappoint her. She hadn't done anything and it happened anyway. Her nan was disappointed in her. I feel like the ending of the film could be interpreted in two ways. One is that she herself was already gifted when her ceremony came and that it just came out in an unusual but necessary way that the house realised. Or that she didn't need a gift after all and the house realised this from then. I loved that even though it wasnt the same as her family she still got her moment with the doorknob. Damn made me tear up.
@christianb572
@christianb572 2 года назад
I took it as being that she does indeed have a gift, and that it’s the gift of the hearth. She’s basically like the Greek goddess Hestia, who used to maintain the hearth fire of both Mount Olympus and the homes of the Greeks, which was important because it was used for cooking and for keeping the home warm. She also helped to keep the peace within the family and she even taught people how to build their homes. That’s basically Maribel in a nutshell.

This movie really hit me in a way that I wasn't expecting. I'm the youngest of three sisters, so imagine my surprise when I realize that the main character is the youngest of three sisters and feels inferior to them because they seem so much better and more accepted than her. So I'm already perfectly invested in Mirabel's struggle. But I also love how it dissects the other characters' struggles too--that having amazing powers can be a blessing and a curse, like how being talented in something can tie you down just as much as it helps you. So I loved the inner conflict of the movie. And I'm a big music buff who found myself bouncing my feet at the songs. So win-win.

Having just seen Encanto, I really agree, the movie was phenomenal, energetic, has tons of memorable characters, and has that feel like you're watching a Broadway stage show. It especially helps that Lin-Manuel Miranda had that kind of background, his songs really helped give off that kind of mood here. By the by, I was definitely blown away by the house itself. Not just for how colorful it was, but also because of how alive it felt, all without a single facial expression. It actually reminded me a lot of the Magic Carpet from Aladdin, I felt equally as spellbound by that same energy and personality with Casita.

I love that these first impressions of fall and winter Disney releases are part of Disneycember. They're like previews for an inevitable longer review. Encanto didn't immerse me the way Moana and Coco did, but I still really enjoyed it. Its formula is completely different from any previous Disney animated musical. It's basically a bottle episode. Disney never does those in film. It focuses entirely on the characters rather than on a big quest. I thought it was a bold move. And I think it paid off. Also, "We Don't Talk About Bruno" has been playing in a loop in my head for the past week.

Also, Bruno is an awesome character and definitely my favorite in the movie. Love how misunderstood he is up to where he’s finally introduced. It goes from creepy guy everyone’s afraid of to weirdo who’s misunderstood and completely harmless. This might be my favourite Disney movie ever, I only now got around to watching it. It's one of the rare instances where a story doesn't reveal all its secrets but it doesn't take away from the story or seem pretentious, but instead just adds to its myth. This is an entirely fresh and original idea, as it isn't about good versus evil or someone having to find themselves against the pressure of society. It's about the struggle of taking care for the things we value the most without losing any of them. This is a very abstract concept, but it is portrayed beautifully in this movie and almost all of it is show, don't tell. Everything that needs to be told is inner monologue in the form of amazing songs, so even those scenes are engaging and more importantly, emotionally fulfilling.

In that regard it really does feel like it would've made an even better stage musical than a film.

This film is very meta for Disney. Each of the gifts for each girl represents the tropes from recent Disney remakes and this film is becoming self aware of these cliche character traits. The lead represents that you dont need any of these gifts to be someone, you just need to love whoever you are. The films message represents that and gives the Disney Remakes a subtle slap in the face.

SPOILERS! On my second viewer I think Abuela being the problem with the family is subtly hinted at throughout the movie. Take the morning after Antonio gets his power. Literally over the breakfast table, she says “Now we have to decided how best to use Antonio’s gift for the family.” She literally wastes no in trying to figure out Antonio’s life for him. As in it’s not Antonio’s job to grow into his power and learn how to use it. No, it’s the family’s job (i.e. her job) to figure that out for him. And it hints that she did the same for everyone else after they got their powers like Luisa sings about later that morning about feeling too much pressure to do her job and Julieta later in her song about the pressures of being expected to be perfect all the time and marry someone she doesn’t love “for the good of the family” There are other ones too but just thought I’d point that out. I loved the fact that Abuela's story is glimpsed at the start and then only brought back during Dos Oruguitas. The animation and music do so much work here to convey Alma's difficult life, her forced immigration and having to bring up children - raise the whole community, really - on her own. Additional scenes laying this out might have been too much for an otherwise light film; and it's good that we discover the tragic story at the same time that Mirabel realises Abuela isn't a cranky old lady for no reason - she's lost everything once in her life and doesn't want to go through that again.

Being Colombian I have to say this is by far one of if not the best representation Hollywood has done of Colombia, and Hollywood has done a horrible job portraying us so far. No, I don't mean that's it's good just because it showed the good stuff, in fact the grandma's backstory represents one of the darkest aspects of it (let's just say that millions of people in rural Colombia have had to go through what she went through, all of that without a miracle to save them). But aside from that, there's always a million details in the background and foreground that just show they did an incredible amount of research to be respectful and accurate while still being able to sell the movie to foreign audiences. You don't need to be knowledgeable of Colombian culture, history, or magical realism to love the movie, but knowing all about that enhances the experience.

I do appreciate the fact that this movie is okay with telling a small story and focuses on character relationships and the conflict within those.!The past few Disney films like Frozen 2 or Raya and the Last Dragon try SO hard to have such complicated journeys and complex worlds that they don’t have much time to make the characters worth caring about. Encanto is the opposite of that and is much more emotionally satisfying and interesting because of it.
