The team visited Mayera M/A JHS, and what we encountered left us deeply moved. We had the privilege of educating over 200 girls and about 90 parents and teachers about Menstrual Hygiene Management, but the most heart-wrenching part was hearing the personal stories of these young girls.
As we distributed 50 reusable pads to those who met our selection criteria, we focused on the girls who face the harsh reality of having to buy their own pads because their parents or guardians cannot afford them. Even more distressing were the stories of girls forced to use rags or pieces of old cloth as makeshift pads. It was shocking to discover that the majority fell into this latter category.
Listening to their stories was both heartbreaking and eye-opening. These young girls, full of potential and dreams, have been carrying the burden of managing their periods in conditions that no one should have to endure. Their resilience in the face of such adversity is nothing short of inspiring.
But today, we saw a glimmer of hope. As we handed out the reusable pads, we witnessed the joy and relief on their faces. The excitement in their eyes as they realized they no longer had to suffer in silence was palpable. They were eager to rewrite their period stories, to embrace this new chapter with dignity and confidence.
This visit was a poignant reminder of why we do what we do. It’s not just about providing pads; it’s about restoring dignity, hope, and a sense of normalcy to these girls’ lives. We left Mayera M/A JHS with heavy hearts but also with renewed determination to continue our mission. Together, we can ensure that no girl has to choose between her health and her education, between dignity and despair.
