The Energica Italian electric sportbikes, the same brand behind the MotoE racing series, have landed on our shores, and Donovan and Rob took the Ego and the Eva to the Cradle Road to find out what the big deal is.
No engine breaking? Dude all electric motorcycles have got regenerative braking... which you dialed down/switched off when you were doing the “oh this experienced rider doesn’t need all the electronic nannies activated.” One of the biggest deals of electric vehicles (bikes and cars) is the regenerative braking effect. I’m really shocked that after your test rides, neither of you picked up on that.
Yeah I was thinking the same. Engine braking is configurable right? So it's quite a substantial miss to keep going on about how weird that is without noticing and mentioning at all that this can be adjusted. Otherwise I liked the review.
There are four settings of regen which, I seem to recall from what I read elsewhere, from lowest to highest level approximate to: two-stroke, four cylinder four-stroke, twin-cylinder four stroke and big single four-stroke.
The fan under the seat is to cool the AC power charger (which is behind the fan). It is not for the ECU which is located on top of the inverter underneath the fake fuel tank hump.
Unfortunately several inaccuracies in this review. The quoted battery and range was for 2021 models, and these two are 2020. I know, as I have a 2020 Eva107 and the battery is 13.7kwh not 21.5kwh plus the colours are different. So they are quoting the newest range, and not the range of these two bikes. Regen is also HUGE when set to 4 (im never over 2, unless racing), so they simply didn't engage it. Fan cools the charge controller, not the VCU. They are the best available, and amazing to ride. Give it a year or so more and the price will reduce as more see all the advantages to going electric, both environmental and performance.
It's the sort of review that gives motoring journalists a bad name. Two incompetent chaps that can't be bothered to research what they are reviewing and verify their statements before publishing it for the world to see. They are giving opinions without actually using the product correctly and systematically exploring its strengths and weaknesses.
I've tried the Zero SF/R a couple of times and another good thing is that one is always in the right gear. Pulls like a train! Everytime and always. :-)
The real challenge with software is not in the development, but in the testing. Testing is really expensive, and it is the first place companies cut costs; a million lines of code is a lot, and that requires a lot of quality assurance; very difficult for a small company to do well.
"That's a lot of forwardness" lol Engine braking? Do they not have energy recovery (KERS) that can be adjusted to simulate engine brake and harvested for more 'forwardness'?
"Electric vehicles are slow" The Model S P100D with Ludicrous mode is the third fastest accelerating production car ever produced, with a 0-60 mph time of 2.5 seconds.
Nice misinformation you propagate. Here is reality : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ItCGU7BTBv8.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-l2ojCqhqGZ8.html Rimac C Two Rimac Concept Lotus Evija Porsche 918 Spyder Porsche 992 Turbo S Porsche Taycan Turbo Nio Ep9 are all quicker. And we see that the 2.5 sec is overstated. more like 2.7 or 2.8 which is still very good for an overweight bad cornering Tesla car. And you also need to learn the difference between quick (acceleration) and fast (topspeed) in cars. Have a nice day
Over R600K? That is insanely stupid! I bet my house that it will not sell. God damn you can have a S1000RR and F850GS plus a lot of change. I'm sorry the brilliance is over shadowed by the price tag.
The advances in performance (including range and charge times) have been impressive, but the improvements in pricing are lagging way too far behind for e-bikes to be considered a real alternative for a significant number of riders. It'll be a while yet.
is that cable ties on the handlebars @ 2.43 ? if so, that's a real shame for a bike with that cost. they could have easily deigned those cables to run in the handlebars.
You guys did a good job reviewing but missed on the regenerative braking part, which I thought is a common knowledge by now..but apparently not. It not only can match engine braking of a combustion engine, but you can change the degree of the braking level, right up to the range, where you don't need to apply the physical brake too often. So, yeah , that part of this review about freewheeling and no engine braking has unintentionally become misleading for those who need to know the information most.
Hey guys, having more consistent upload frequency works well for youtube channels. Having weekly releases for a bike show is very difficult, how about adding some bike build content for the youtube channel?
Very good and fun review, but yeah apparently you can have engine braking. Tough with one day on the bike but still... Also, please stop talking over Rob all the time, sheesh 😂
The Primary Issue that I have had with The Bike Show over the years has been their Walking Upon One Another's Words !!! Kudos to you for citing this (as "Talking Over"). The Secondary Issue has been what I call Helmet Speak. Not Professional (no matter how many viewers The Missenden Flyer's channel has). Many, many RU-vid Presenters can learn from the Rocket Man channel [Brit living in Portugal]. He shoots video Without all the Vroom-Vroom [looking at You, Motorcycle.Com] or Helmet Speak. And, he Writes A Script then records that Script, adding in those carefully-edited words Without the "ums" and "uhs" of Robot of Vespa San Diego (and others). Rocket Man channel is THE Example of an amateur being Professional.
I would love to get an electric motorcycle only the cost and Ks getting outta it just not viable yet, example, If I could comfortably ride from Sydney to Phillip Island for the MotoGP which on the highway is over 1000ks away knowing I could top up and charge the bike at any service station I wouldn't fear it. Hopefully, in the near future, the infrastructure will be in place plus the range on the bikes will improve to negate the range anxiety, plus the cost would be justified as well.
Who are these people who think electric cars and motorcycles are slow. They seem to get brought up everytime. More like cost let's talk about that. The perception is they don't have the sort of vehicles they want in electric versions. the cost is much higher and there not sure how easy it will be to find the chargers when they need them.
basically its a scooter with a different look. Thing about clutch and gears and quickshifters and "sweet spot" rev range is FUN. You ride a super sport for fun. When you take all that away its just a daily commuter. Even a bicycle can do it.
200 mile range, fast charge from 10% to 80 or 90% in ten minutes or less....full touring gear.....now we have a contender....until then....it’s not for me
