Have you tried playing X4 the star wars mod. You can create your own faction, build or steal ships, biuld stations to claim territory, become Allies or enemies with other known factions.

24:00 you lose every defensive ground battle no matter what because you don't even care, you just auto resolve battles you could have easily won
