ENGINE OIL CHANGE @3000 km ON THE ROYAL ENFIELD HIMALAYAN - A DETAILED YET PRECISE WALK THROUGH

So i get the bike washed and prepped for the supreme maintenance procedure of them all - THE OIL CHANGE . This is crucial if you belong to the RIDE HARD category that you change the oil&oil filters on time . i personally change @3000kms mark , period. my HIMALAYAN has done 25,000 kms on the MOTUL 5100 and i very strongly recommend it .
key points to consider -
#PARK motorcycle on a LEVEL SURFACE
#change oil after about 1-3 minutes of idling on a cold start.
#change oil after about 2-3 hours of rest after a long ride .
#remove oil from the drain plug first and then from the inspection screen area to avoid spillage
#inspect wire screen/mesh for metal debris . too much metal or gunk in there will indicate something wrong inside the transmission.
#try to rejuvenate the rubber O-Rings by pressing on then repeatedly for a better seal .
#tilt the bike towards you to extract as much old oil as possible
#remove the oil filter cap partially and let the oil pour out first . then remove the three bolts from bottom up.
#pour about 50 milli litres of new oil into the new oil filter before installing
#tighten bolts again in bottom up order.
#hand tighten all the bolts and then a 1/4 of a turn with the specific tool ought to do in most cases.
#pour in 1.5 litres into the transmission and let the engine idle for 1-2 minutes .
#check the oil level on inspection window and add accordingly .
#BEST TO FILL UP TO HIGHER LEVEL on the inspection window.
#1.6 - 1.8 ltrs is the range that you can fill up depending on how much old oil you have managed to extract.
#collect old oil and give it to your local mech for recycling.

Thorough and well paced, this is the best Himalayan oil change "how to" on YT. At first I wondered about you not changing the o-rings, gasket, and crush washer then you mentioned how availability is an issue. Going over how to evaluate and maintain them when you can't replace them is an important point that is usually not covered. Lastly, covering the amount of oil consumption is immensely helpful and, again, not usually covered. Thanks so much for this excellent tutorial.

Good job Ben. Here in the states quite a few of us run a full synthetic oil as we normally run a bit higher RPMs. There is also an additional drain plug near the front of the engine. Not everyone uses it as it’s placement is a pain in the a$$ to place a drain spout such as your cardboard. Again, a very good job Ben.
@ONTWOWHEELSBEN
@ONTWOWHEELSBEN 3 года назад
Hi Joe. yes that's because of the kind of roads you have there. our national highways have more traffic than your city roads . Its an adventure every single day here . also the third drain bolt lets out about 50 -100 mls which can be collected from the main drain bolt if you lift the front up ( bike resting on you side stand) . i do that regularly . didn't want to show that on video as enthusiastic novices ( too many out there ) here will find themselves in trouble if they get it wrong.

A trick to consider on your o-rings... on older automatic transmissions on cars, I have heard to put a little bit of brake fluid into the transmission fluid. As it circulates, it will get on to all the o-rings. The rubber in the o-rings will absorb it and swell slightly and reseal whatever they are meant to seal. It does not take much, a couple of capfuls into your fluid reservoir, and it will eventually dilute into the transmission fluid. For the purposes of this video, just take a couple of drops on your finger and wet the o-ring seals while you are draining the oil from the engine. Also, while you are running the engine to warm the oil prior to changing it, that is a good time to clean and lube your chain.

I am actually thinking about upgrading my BS6 and I see that you're very knowledgeable. Would you say that the £1000 pounds for powertronic, free flow filter and exhaust, chain and sprocket upgrade is worth it? Is there a big difference with cruising speed/acceleration/fuel consumption? Thank you so much for the videos, I've learned so much!
@ONTWOWHEELSBEN

yes together they account for faster acceleration, better throttle response and higher cruising speeds. and if you get the tuning right ( depending on how invested you are in the process) you are looking at an additional power gains of 3-5 bhp.

Hey!! Nice video as usual. I recently drained out about 500 ml extra engine oil from the bike (you saw it on the fb group). Coming to the query what about the crush washer, don't we need to change it every time. If reusing it must be smoothened and annealed to soften up again. Although you didn't do any such thing, neither did I!! Are we taking too much of a chance???. Well on a positive note nothing is leaking.

Thanks for another great video Ben 😁 I have a query which is half off topic of this, regarding engine flush. I am planning to flush my bike once it reaches 30K KMs. My concern is the sump is 2.3 liter and the drain amount is less so around 500 ml is still in there so the flush mixed oil will be there even after draining. How to deal with it ? Or to run cheap 15W50 for 10-15 mins drain it n put the oil we want ? One more request will you make a list of tools with sizes needed for Himalayan or you can make a seperate video for that as per your time.

I have used motul for more than 20 years now . Mineral , semi & fully synthetic. They are the BEST in my opinion for hi revving motorcycle engines . So if u ride hard go with it . If not all the other brands are options .

Hello, I have been following your videos they are very informative, being a Himalayan owner I appreciate the hard work you put in making these videos. Also, I need a suggestion/help from you, I'm about to start a 3500kms ride and I'm looking to change my oil by myself. what oil do you suggest for such long rides? I know this is a very debatable topic but out of your experience what do you recommend?

Bhai, alternatively you can also remove spark plug and crank the engine 3-4 seconds by pressing power button for 3-4 times. Don't over do it ... Surely some 50ml oil will come out .
@ONTWOWHEELSBEN
@ONTWOWHEELSBEN 3 года назад
sorry to disagree dear Shishupal , but one should never remove the spark plug and crank without first CLEANING THE ENTIRE AREA THOROUGHLY. The inward suction of air will pull in all the dirt in the plug well into the combustion chamber . this is not a recommended practice (especially in an offload used machine) .
@0xsergy
@0xsergy 3 года назад
Not worth doing bearing damage for 50ml. Just put fresh fluid, you'll never drain everything anyway. At most tip it on center stand as far as you can hold it.

Mr.Ben, where do you give your Himalayan for washing (I saw the railway museum board in your video). In future I can also give my ‘to be delivered Himalayan’ to the same mechanic for washing. 45 days delivery time from the date of booking my Himalayan is too long a waiting period huh...

Hi, I am considering to buy a motorcycle and Royal Enfield is my first, however I am little confused between classic 350 and Himalayan. I have to take such bikes which I can do in day today life, this is my first bike and can also go on tour. Whose maintenance cost is not too much and mileage is also good.

350 standard is best for city and highway (occasional ). 350 is a pure city motorcycle because of the seat design . and himalayan is just not a city friendly motorcycle.

totally depends on how you ride . if you are a gentle rider then you can have drain intervals 5000-8000 kms also . if you are aggressive on your throttle changing at 3000 is a good idea.
