I have a 1000cc Thermos bottle. Can carry plenty of hot beverage in it while going on a winter bicycle ride.

I have 2500cc in four 625 bottles for my bicycle rides (pretty hot where I live), that way you can also have option on more than one type of drink.

I’m glad I started on a ZX6R, the 600’s are fine starting out imo because as long as you keep it low to mid rpm’s you won’t get any crazy power and you can slowly start accelerating faster till you’re accustomed to it. My worry with people starting out on slower bikes is they will get too comfortable on them and when they get a 600 or 1k they will be overconfident. To each their own, do what you know you can handle

I’d tend to agree with you on that. I started on a Yammy R3 and a Honda CBR250. After moving over to a Kawasaki Z650 it took a while for me to relearn my throttle and clutch inputs because I was too used to being able to ham fist the smaller displacement bikes I’d ridden previously and had to undo that muscle memory. If I’d started out on the Z650 I would have already committed the finer throttle and clutch control required for a bigger displacement bike to muscle memory and probably be in good stead to ride a litre bike if I wanted to. If anything I think a four cylinder 600 would probably be easier to learn on than the two cylinder 650 class bikes as the 650s are very torquey down low and thus the low speed throttle control would be more difficult.

I am from Asia and due to the narrower, much crowded and very little maintained roads I believe a 150cc bike but with a decent acceleration like Yamaha R15 is ideal for starters. Mainly because you learn to use and maneuver the power at your disposal responsibly due to the forced constrictions and dangers of the road but after a year or two or extensive riding you can gradually progress with a very stable learning curve as you move towards higher displacement engines.

Asians are also much smaller + lighter and like you said your roads aren't as good. Here in America We have bad roads in certain areas though you've got like half a continent of area but we have smooth wide highways and much wider lanes than most countries.

@@WalrusWinking There are huge Express Ways in India now, so a Litre class is perfect for Beginners and intermediates. Indians are growing taller and bigger now, 5.9 to 6.2 from GenZ are a lot common, so the Ride Height aint an issue. Indians shrank a lot in the past 300 years, but recovery is lookin good

Not necessarily true - V-twins have obnoxious amounts of low-end power and pull like a train without revving to obnoxiously high RPMs. On some of the bigger Harleys you could probably dump clutch at idle and it'll start going. Hell an Iron 883 hits peak torque of 51 ft/lbs at 3.5k RPM while an F800GS (torquey ADV parallel twin) makes 54 ft/lbs at 5.8k RPM and a Ducati 848 (V-twin sport bike) hits peak torque of 62 ft/lbs at 9.5k RPM. Even an inline four cylinder GSXR R750 won't hit 50bhp till 6k RPM (though it tops out at 126ft/lbs @14k thanks to having twice as many cylinders).

Power is power, torque is torque. An engine can be tuned to either have a good pull on the lows or a higher top speed on the high revs. Torque for better acceleration, power for higher top speed. Bigger displacement, longer piston stroke, less cylinders, cylinders arranged closer to the boxer configuration, all of this is more geared towards better torque at lower revolutions.

Good video. This “cylinders-hard-to-understand” problem is also the reason, why people usually struggle to understand, why they cant get such a sweet sound from their Ninja 650 even with a new exhaust, while the 636 sounds like a God.

I have a Ninja 650 and I agree. It's a great beginner bike that looks awesome, and it's possible to have a bit of fun on it without being taken by surprise by the power.

My start wasn't ideal. I purchased a 636 as my starter. I know this is gonna trigger possible insults but my father told me that if you start out with a low power bike, you are shortly going to thirst for more power, get bored and want to sell the bike before riding season is over. Now bikes, displacement and power were different decades ago and he was more into Harley's. I high sided on my bike. I wasn't going very fast at all, the bike definitely has that top end even on low power mode. I was cut off by a car in a residential part (I wasn't going to main streets yet), I grabbed for too much front brake, didn't pull in the click and grazed the the throttle and the result was an endo with me eating sh!t. In hindsight, it's not the bike, it was me and I learned from that mistake. I always intended on MSF courses, they were't available just yet and I was taking it easy with a permit in residential areas only. I'm getting back on the saddle, pursuing the MSF licensing course and will learn my bike, taking the learning curve into perspective as the bike isn't going anyway. I reiterate, it's not the bike it's experience/skill lvl. Ride within your limits. If you don't feel confident, park the bike and think it over, watch videos, take classes and focus on what will make you a better rider.

I guess it might be situational. First bike is a Vulcan 900 Custom. Don't get me wrong, it's a great bike... I bought it to be SUPER SAFE.... well... just a few months in and I am already wishing I had started on something bigger. Problem is.. i'm 6'2'' and 290 lbs. I had extremely limited options in the sub $8000 arena. Now I feel stuck, paying for a Bike that I DO love... but just like a bad relationship... I look at her and just wish she was someone else.

Battlescar Gigantica ROTFLMAO..... Dude, it isn’t the bike, or the engine size, it is the fact that YOU haven’t figured it out yet. We have all heard the saying, “no matter how hot the chick is, there is some guy somewhere that is tired of riding her.” The fact is, motorcycles are the same.... go hang out downtown where all the sport bike riders hang out on their bikes and don’t even go inside, occasionally leaving in small groups to go ride the circuit and then right back to the parking lot (most areas have one of these). Take a look at the guys on the expensive/fast bikes..... most of them are talking about their NEXT bike.... because their bikes are sexy as hell, but those dudes are already tired of riding them, just like the hot chicks whose boyfriends are checking out the tits on some other chick. You are in NEARLY the same boat, but the difference is that you are too broke to “divorce” the nag you have... There are guys out there that would give their left nut for the nag you have... enjoy the fact that you have a ride and get to mount her every day... and don’t let her know that you are fantasizing about some other mount when you climb on top of her.... Lol, thanks for the laugh...

long story short life wouldnt let me afford a bike for 15 years after I wrecked my old 750 vulcan in 2000. I got a ninja 300 a few years ago as an ease back into riding bike. my plan was to replace it in a couple years but she is so fiesty and fun I am just keeping her. she's light flicky and very forgiving. she tops out between 108 to 125 depending on weather wind and the seemingly random quality of gas that gets put into her tank. at the same time she can be at max speed by the time I get out of the parking lot and I have straight up smoked a lot of the bigger cruisers off the line. 600s and up leave me pretty quick though. its all good though love my lil 300 she is awesome.

I have both a CBR500R and 675R. People say they started on a 600 inline 4 and did fine, but I can tell you from experience that the lower displacement has insane handling at low speeds and I believe helps to make you a better rider even in the long run. You don’t really appreciate the power and speed of a faster bike or notice the huge agility difference of a smaller bike until you’ve practiced on both. I don’t even know how people ride liter bikes sometimes. I’ve taken the 675R to 154 mph and pushed it to my very limits on corners where I’m exiting so fast the front wheel is coming off the ground and you can feel the chassis bending then hit air cuz of a tiny bump in the road.

I agree with this. I own a Honda St1300. Today I test rode an Fz1. This Fz1 has the smaller displacement but was a lot faster than my ST1300. Great vid brother.

No idea why you would ever need anything faster than the cop bike, the ST1300, unless you are breaking the law. FABULOUS engine imo but it is a bit heavy.

I just bought a Harley Sportster 1200 cc. I did know that they don't have much power (and also mine is limited to 35 kW/47 hp due to European bike license reasons) but man, that torque. I clocked 0-100 km/h in 4.5 s and with the margin of error I dare to say that in reality it's under 5 s. The horsepower doesn't tell everything.

Dankovich i have a 650 aswell, si gle cylinder. Adv bike, has great pull 2nd and up. Looking at an fz07 next I dont really care for going fast 100+. Fz 07 has decent pull you can actually feel while the bike gets louder and louder. Thats what I love about my klr650, but i just want more torque, she screams going 15mph in 1st. At this point i am just so used to upright seating position that there is no going back. I was a bit confused years ago about this same topic but through reserach i figured it out. Has a co worker ask me the same thing talked in this vid, a total newb btw. Heck, i am still learning about the diffrent types of bikes. There is no better feeling tearing your bike apart to fix whatever is wrong with it and properly fixing it. Makes you more of an asset to others aswell I am into that sorta thing.

Your recommending 600ccs but id recommend a 400 or a 250 so you can actually get to know what a motorcycle can do

Nice video. I find that torque and clutch “weight” also makes a huge difference. I ride an 1100 Ducati and it’s got so much damn torque it’s unpredictable. Also some bikes (especially older) have very heavy dry clutches which can be a nightmare for new riders.

I started on a '14 636 and in all honesty, it was extremely difficult to learn on especially when I consider the fact that I earned my license on a 31hp 300cc bike. It took me many months to get used to the top end pull and at the end of the day, if that bike didn't have lower power mode, I might not be here right now. I agree wholeheartedly with HR2 and if I were to do this again, I'm not even sure I'd start on a 650, I'd probably consider a 390 duke as I wouldn't have had to fight the feeling of utter fear while getting acclimated to riding which I often did on the six tre..

In all honesty, my issue is I owned a few fast Honda's so the high strung nature of sportbikes seduced me into continually pushing the right wrist envelope. I shouldn't say it was difficult to ride bcuz it wasn't, the difficult part was controlling myself from not ringing out a 10 second vehicle every time I got on it. Since then I've participated in a few track riding courses and have owned a 750 and H2 so believe me.. I'm str8er than 6 o'clock bcuz the 6tre forced my to sharpen my skillset reaaalllll quick but its truly a double edged sword. Once again, if I had to do it over, I'd have started on a smaller bike but that's me..

The right of passage to the litre bikes is fast disappearing 😕. Okay the period of 2 strokes is over but there was something nostalgic about starting your journey on a small 2 stroke and working your way up. I'm 44 and my own personal climb to an R1 started on a RG80 followed by an RS125 and then a TZR125RR. Next came 2 x CBR400's an R6 and now an R1. I don't know maybe I'm showing my age but I'm kinda proud of my right of passage to the big bikes.

ickk rou I’ve had the r6 for almost a month. I miss the 300 already. I don’t ride with my ego. Here in Cali it’s legal to lane split and even cars in front of me give me way to lane split but I don’t choose to. I’m trying to be a safe/defensive rider. Btw, one highlight that I love about the r6 compared to the 300 riding in the freeway.

I got to ride an 06 Ninja 500R and honestly I really didn't like it, the parallel twin motor with carbs is kinda sad and the gearing felt too high to me, had to keep the RPMs crazy high for it to make much power.

To anyone looking at a beginner bike I say go small. Will you get bored of the power in a few months? Yeah probably but when that happens you can start learning how to turn hard and brake hard and push the limits of the bike and really learn how to ride well so when you do upgrade eventually you'll be better than all the guys who started on 600s or 1000s

ive gone from a 180bhp ZX10R (which was stolen) to a 70bhp SV650 and yeah the power delivery is very noticeable but with that being said the SV650 tears it up at the lights as it has tons of torque

Mine was a kR1S 250cc & it taught me a lot about holding good corner speed & that stood me in good stead for the 636 2004 a year later , & i still have said 636 & still use it & love it , its as reliable as the day i bought it new all those years ago ❤

I looked at the CC`S when I first started riding because I was a novice and as a learner I wanted the biggest CC I could LEGALLY RIDE LOL, I bought my bikes on physical size and type(race/offroad) only when I had been riding for a year or so, BUT! It was not until riding after a few years I discovered different engine designs and type. This discovery made me search for the best engine too power delivery and that my friend WAS THEE TRUE EYEOPENER!!:) The 2 stroker is light and powerful BUT the INLINE 4 is powerful and revvy,the V2, twin is torquey, the V4 is the best of both inline and v twin, FFS please choose wisely lol :) I now ride a HONDA VTR1000F FIRESTORM/HAWK and I love it:)

I started on a 600 about 3 years ago, and changed to a 1000 after a few months. Wish I had just bought the 1000 first. Apart from tyres only lasting 4000 miles, the running costs are about the same. Also the power on the 1000 is easier to control, because of the greater low down torque.

Great video, I started riding last your around the start of spring. First bike was basically a freebie since just got a salary bonus, $800 for an 85’ Suzuki GS550L- after adding a couple thousand miles ended up buying a 05’ Ninja 636; well I brought the bike out after the winter is over, TOTALLY FORGOT HOW POWERFUL SHE IS ❤️

It always depends on the rider. Some people can get into trouble on a 250 rebel and others shouldn't even be on a bike. Testosterone and arrogance, you mix these two together in just the right way and it's a great recipe for making road crayons.

I started in a 2016 636 as my first bike, now I’ve been riding it for the past month and I honestly feel like I’ve been riding for years. I took it very slow at first only riding around my neighborhood then hoped on a 50mph highway get the feel of accelerating and breaking at higher speeds and just kept going from there. At the end of the day YOU are in control of the bike it’s your choice how fast you wanna take it. Ohh and the 636 makes no power until 9,000 RPM so you can do what I did and shift early for the first few weeks and I can guarantee that you will not feel like it has to much HP to control. Another thing to watch out for is torque. I know a lot of folks starting out grab onto the throttle when they make a mistake, going into a turn, feel a bump in the road, etc as a natural reflex. Having a big harley, which not having much power up in the higher RPM's, they produce quite a bit of torque when taking off.

I was always taught that the replacement for displacement was a way of thinking about tuning engines and how when you get to a certain horsepower a bigger engine is going to be better. Sure you could tune a 600 to 180bhp but it’s better to have a bigger engine handling that power easier and having less stresses therefore more reliability that then 600.

A lot of people do not seem to realize that technology has improved and the age/type of the bike makes a difference! My 1987 BMW K100 is a 1 liter inline 4 sport tourer cranking out 90HP, which is a lot less than even a modern 600/4 sport bike can do. My buddy is nuts for thinking my vintage beamer is anywhere near as fast as hit 06 Z750S lol

@@phatrides222000 The best reason we have over here in the UK for them not coming along, they do a test on a 125, then need to do another test on a middleweight before they're allowed on anything over a certain horsepower which by that time they're either dead or learnt how to ride properly, no new rider should be allowed on what is a race bike, they're accidents waiting to happen because the nature of people is to test how fast their bike will go and then they fk up.

In my country , to get a license, you got to do a riding course on a 150cc bike, and if you pass,you only get to ride or buy 200cc and below. A year later you get to retake the course with a 400cc, and you can ride or buy bikes up to 400cc. Then lastly another year later you retake it with an 800cc bike and now you can buy and ride any engine sized bikes. Starting on a 200/300 is the best thing to do.

I started on a 300 and moved on to a 600 after about 5k miles of riding (which is a little quick). You can definitely start on a zx6r or similar but if you're someone that likes pushing your bike, it's just safer to start on a 300. Personally I'm not someone that's going to be super light on the throttle with these bikes; if I was I would've gotten more of a cruiser. I had a number of close calls navigating tight turns that definitely would've resulted in an accident had I been riding a 600. Like everyone says, there's no right or wrong answer, just know yourself.

My inventory is as followed. 2017 Hawk 250 with 1 cylinder engine 219cc and 14hp. 2007 Hyosung with V2 engine 649cc and about 70hp. 2005 Triumph St 1050 with 3 cylinder engine 1049cc and about 125hp. 1980 Yamaha XS1100 with 4 cylinder engine 1102cc and about 90hp.

That is not a great argument for debunking "no replacement for displacement." The ninja 650 and 636 are apples and oranges. One is a commuter motor and one is a track motor. The saying means that the ZX10r is superior in power than the 636 which both have similar engine configuration and purpose. You mentioned a 1300cc Harley struggles to make 70 horespower, but it makes around 80 ft-lbs compared to a 636 making 46 ft-lbs at over double the rpm. Manufactures could have their bikes produce more power but it isn't appropriate for the target market. You did a good job talking about the factors (cam profile, etc.) that change those figures. My two cents here is just that the bigger motor is always more powerful (or capable of more power due to tuning) if both it and a smaller motor are developed for the same task.

Very true. My starter bike is a suzuki gs500f. Probably the best possible starter bike i couldve gotten. Even at 500cc it is comparable to 300cc bikes in power and performance. So yea its underpowered but perfect for a beginner. After riding it im glad i went with this over a cbr600. Riding a cbr 600 for a first bike would make learning take longer and also less enjoyable because youre fighting your survival instincts that can easily kill you onna fast 600 or 650

Well it's just, there are some key displacement groups that are common to seek out performance over reliability and fuel economy. These displacement groups are often determined by the similar racing categories, which is why they are often so specific. The performance seeking cc categories are mainly like this: For inline 4 engines: - 400cc (for older bikes) - 600cc - 750cc - 1000cc For inline 3 engines: - 675cc - 800cc For V2 engines: - 800cc/900cc - 1100cc/1200cc For V4 engines: - 1000cc - 1100+ cc There are few performance parallel twin engines since they mainly offer low end torque and are not really good with high revs. These are mainly the ones used for touring/sports touring, beginner bikes, etc like most of the 650 class which is 80% parallel twin / inline twin engines. Almost all the 300cc bikes use this engine configuration too.

I really like the features of the zx6r, but the 650 seems to be a safer choice. I have ridden dirt bikes and four wheelers in the past and while I'm well aware that sport bikes are a whole different beast I'm still on the fence about which to choose as a first bike. I know it is a toss up between these two bikes at least.

My 1980 kz750 4 banger spanks my 1978 kz1000a 4. The 1000 turns 9000 rpm and weighs more. The 750 turned 12000 rpm and hit 90 in second gear. The thousand doesn't hit 90 til 4th. Though the 750 handled smoother, it would pick up the front tire if you over revved without bellying up to the bar.

I find interesting how Americans need to categorize everything and often get stuck in such small easy little things like if they are the most complex mysteries of the universe. Just from visual, you clearly see the 636 is a race bike and the 650 is a cheap one... And, is it that difficult to look for a technical sheet? 2016 cbr 650.. Literally pulls away from the beginning till 70ish to 💯 mph from any 1k bike or 600cc bike. PERIOD.. Now living in California, I see a lot of veteran riders, that don't bother with the initial engage in what 'we' can do, on initial engage in roll on acceleration.

Meh, put a skilled rider on a 650 and your r6 will be nothing. Straight line racing isnt racing for me btw.

In the UK I did all my training on a 90hp Honda 650. That's the sort of bike you learn on, and have to pass your motorcycle test on. It's the best way to prepare you for riding on your own. Passing a test on a small displacement bike, and then being able to ride anything is crazy. Training and a test on a larger hp bike is the best way to go.

I'm in the US and what you described is exactly what I did lol. I got a ninja 400 last May, passed my test on it, put about 8,000 miles on it, and just bought an 05 636 2 weeks ago. The fact that I am legally able to go out and purchase a brand new s1000rr just because I was able to pass the test on a ninja 400 is absolutely insane. Only solution I can think of is to require motorcyclists to take a track course every time they get a new bike or something. I think it's just a monetary issue because motorcycling is such a niche hobby.

Well I drive a 650cc single. 48hp. Loads of torque. There are 250s out there making more power. It's really not about cc alone

Stark Never Said it had to be a modern engine or a 4stroke. But my point is still standing. Compare a torquey 650cc single with a 600cc supersport engine and you have the same concept. More then double the HP out of less volume

Exactly, because no modern 4-stroke 250cc bike will come close to beating a 600/650cc. Only the old 250cc's (inline four) come close.

I got a ZX6R 636 for my first bike (still own it) and nearly wrecked it on my first lap around the neighborhood. Definitely should've watched your videos before getting into bikes but I'm glad I own a great motorcycle.

Cost for cost it's usually cheaper to just buy a bigger engine than a smaller one with more complications. I believe this statement came from industrial operations in areas such as mining, processing, etc. Vehicles are different because they have emissions to deal with and the demand for an engine to use less room.
