We're back in Trailmakers making a supersonic vehicle that doesn't move. Can I engineer a supersonic catapult capable of flinging loads at over 750mph??

This is currently being developed as a potential method of launching vehicles into space. You should try to make a space launch vehicle in the survival game… since it is the goal of the game after all.
@SilverMKI
@SilverMKI Год назад
It is also a horrifically flawed method of launching stuff into space unfortunately.
@LegallyTrash
@LegallyTrash Год назад
@@SilverMKI I can see the beauty in the theory, but there’s obviously zero possibility of it being used for any manned missions. As of April, NASA had decided to continue to invest in the concept to see if it could be used to deliver a payload into space more efficiently than rockets alone, but I guess we’ll see if it’s possible for the company to build a vacuum chamber the size of a football field that can accelerate a payload to 5000 mph reliably.
@LegallyTrash
@LegallyTrash Год назад
@RCE you could also try this on KSP; or even better, make a geostationary centrifugal space launch platform for deep space Kerbal missions … assuming it’s possible to get the vehicle to spin about its axis and the kraken doesn’t kill Jedediah first …
@gsquared8730
@gsquared8730 Год назад
@@LegallyTrash stratzenblitz already did that
@SilverMKI
@SilverMKI Год назад
@retsaM innavoiG because you are putting significant amounts of energy into something that requires extremely precise timing and rapid movement of launch parts (ie the cover over the vacuum chamber, the release mechanism, etc) to function correctly. Any failure or misalignment means you are throwing the payload through the side walls of your launch chamber or ripping your launch mechanism apart. You're rapidly repressurising the launch chamber which doesn't do hardware or electronics any good. Much better to pick a mountain somewhere and build a maglev launch rail and tunnel up the side of it, since you can use that for much larger payloads as well as crewed modules.

You should use the angle sensor instead of the altitude. The way it's set, if you're headed down from the top when you hit the speed setpoint, it'll detach anyway. The angle sensor would let you be sure you detach at the optimum point. Maybe add just a bit of weight to give you a stabilization fin for the flight? Also, check the cockpit weight. You might be able to balance the load with the engines in the axial direction - engines on one side, cockpit in the other, with just the cockpit and it's streamlining detaching. Use a flat connector to hold it to the side, with the detachable block behind the cockpit attached to it. I'm a mech eng myself.

Potentially too he's going to get better range out of about 35 degrees over 45. But it depends on the physics modelling in Trailmaker taking into account drag properly.

We engineers like complex solutions too much and this video perfectly demonstrates that. The first design was okay but it quickly got complex and as a result it took a long time to make it work... it is so recognizable (unfortunately most architects know of this weakness too and they often use it to make fun of engineers 😜)
@AgentWest
@AgentWest Год назад
You took a 10-minute topic and stretched it out to over 20! Now THAT is skill! :D On a serious note, servo stacking _is_ a thing in TM, but it only works if you power them. If they are free-spinning it does nothing. Also TM tends to get unhappy if there are large side loads (like a long support pillar) on hinges and such since those are not all that rigid at high loads. You can even see servos sagging when they were stacked to support the catapult at one time. Point is, making this catapult's base into a U shape instead of two separate pillars would have been way more stable. And lastly, why not use angle sensors instead of altitude? Would have been way easier to program the release angle.
