Engineers TEST Electrical Tapes!

We tested 13 different electrical tapes to see which tape was the BEST. We tested their tensile strength and their adhesion strength when exposed to the heat and the cold. We tested their claims of flame retardancy and resistance to common chemicals found in the engine bay of a car, such as engine degreaser, power steering fluid and motor oil. In addition, we provide our recommendation as to what tape is best under different scenarios.

This channel has potential. Just don't take sponsors unless you tell sponsors you're going to test their products fairly. Too many product test channels take sponsors and it becomes unreliable because of course you're going to shill your highest paid sponsors.

I think taking products for review with a disclaimer you paid 0 cost for it is fine, especially if there are multiple vendors involved. This really depends on the creator though as PR departments naturally want their product put in the best light. If you put your foot down and say "I will look at it" with no contractual obligations then they should be fine.

@Grayson Lackey you have a good point. Thank you for your input. Those situations could occur, but your guy's trust is so much more important than any sponsorship. Either way, thanks for sharing, every like, comment and subscribe helps us tremendously!

Nothing wrong with channels taking sponsors, that have not put any products up for testing during the sponsored video. So for example, say you are testing oil filters, and a company offers a sponsorship for advertising lawn care products. No conflict since the sponsorship and products being tested are separate of each other. If the products or service that is being presented is a good deal, and the sponsorship doesn't put undue stress or ask the content creators to violate their personal philosophies, it's a win win.

don't skimp out on electrical tape, if you're working under the hood, go with super 88 or 33. it's just much easier to work with. I love that you included tesa tape, good stuff

I used to buy Scosche for harness tape but in early 2020 I couldn't get a hold of any and tried this Tesa stuff and I've been buying it since. Super 88, Kapton & Tesa are now all I use for "electrical" tape.

@@redatlas8484 Like OP said, it is aesthetically pleasing. It's very common in the bass audiophile universe as it isn't really affected at all by heat, is easy to remove, and has a sound deadening profile. Since it is more of a fabric material, wires don't make sounds when vibrating against a surface. I vividly remember covering every inch of an old sound build truck's wiring inside the cab with tessa tape nearly a decade ago, could immediately tell a difference and the tape still looks like it did the day I installed it.

I'm surprised the Harbor Freight tape wasn't included here. I'd expect it to fair about as well as the other budget tapes but it'd be nice to know if it could be on par with some of the middle of the pack tapes. Rather than electrical testing I think it would have been more informative (if a bit subjective) to have a test on wrapping some actual power cords and spanning from the inner conductors to the jacket of the cord. That change in diameter when you're doing half overlapping wraps tends to cause cheap tapes to form a crease on the narrower side whereas the better tapes will conform to the changing shape a bit better. The reason why I think that would be a better test than just breakdown voltage is because most of these tapes are just a plain vinyl substrate of approximately the same thickness and they've almost all been UL tested so you'd expect them to all perform very similarly but in real world applications you're much more likely to see moisture forming a conductive path through a crease on the tape or where the adhesive has started to peel away after a year of thermal cycling. I really liked the recommendation of wrapping the tape with some tesa tape, that's a great way to protect the electrical tape and not have to rely so much on adhesive strength in more challenging environments.
@BrandRanks
@BrandRanks Год назад
@Andrew Merts we would've liked to test the harbor freight, but 13 tapes was already a lot. We'll be sure to include harbor freight products in the future. I like your idea about testing the flexibility in terms of conforming to changing diameter, it would be very subjective like you mentioned but usefull. We tried to keep it as scientific as we could so we tested their "bounce back" or how much did the tape recuperate after being stretch. Generally the tapes that did the best in this test, would be the ones that conform the best to nay shape given they shrink more and provide a tighter seal. Thank you so much for your feedback, it is much appreciated.🙂

Just found this in my RU-vid suggestions, and as Project Farm would say... VERY IMPRESSIVE. Can't believe you only have 22K subs... added mine to those numbers, I wouldn't be surprised if that number hasn't doubled by this time next year, as word gets out about your channel. Awesome video for such a small channel! Really high quality-looking video editing, and excellent camera presence from the host. I hope you don't mind me giving some tough love with some constructive criticism that I think will take your videos to the next level. First of all, I would suggest that you explain why the properties your're testing are important, so that the more layman-type or newbie viewers aren't completely left in the dark. I noticed you didn't talk much about the significance of these properties. Interjecting more real-life examples and allegories would not only make it easier for the audience to understand why these properties matter, but also make the video more engaging and thus more entertaining. There's quite a bit of reverberation in your audio, I would suggest making sure your lapel mic is pointed directly at your mouth and fiddling with the gain. If you have the budget, maybe consider doing some basic sound proofing measures wherever you are recording. Stock music in the background could also go a long way; there are plenty of royalty free music libraries, including RU-vid's own in-house one. Last and frankly the most minor/subjective criticism, is that I think the editing can support the comedic moments a little better. Of course, there is a wide spectrum of what people prefer in terms of comedy, but to me personally the editing feels like it is half-heartedly suggesting a comedic moment, but not committing to the bit. When you are approaching how to make something funny through or support by editing, I would suggest to overexaggerate it first, and then tastefully dial it back. It's better for a committed joke to not land and move on than to just hedge and half-send.

@jackieAZ Wow... THANK YOU so much for taking the time to give us this incredible feedback. This is extremely helpful and we will always be open to feedback like this. We are just two people learning the ropes as we go and it has been a steep learning curve to say the least, camera, audio, testing, editing, scripting and your feedback is ABSOLUTELY invaluable. All we want is to make great content people enjoy and I agree and will work to try to explain more the reasoning behind our tests. Our goal is to incorporate animations in order to aid the explanations, but only being able to do this on the weekend makes this very daunting, but worth it thanks to comments like yours. As for the sound, I agree, we just upgraded to a shotgun mic and are working on treating the room to avoid that reverb. ( Adobe de-reverb, not that great). Thanks for the feedback on the comedic aspect, as a small channel, we have such a small sample size and we are still trying to gauge what our audience likes and doesn't enjoy in terms of jokes, so we are taking it slow, but again, your feedback helps us get there faster. Thank you for your support, your kindness and your willingness to share these amazing tips!🙂

Scotch 23 is a self-fusing, waterproof up to 69kV tape, just FYI. This, just like picking out a cam shaft, or hell, buying a car, is very much a "there's going to be something out there for you, you just need to properly define your parameters". 3M has a pretty good selection matrix PDF on their site (search "3M heat shrink tubing -product selection guide"), including UL 224 and SAE compliance delineation. Alternatively, if you needed something like self-fusing properties, but also marine-rated salt-water insulation, you could stretch-wrap Scotch 23 and then heat shrink Ancor on top of it. (I realize this is a very contrived example because the adhesive in Ancor is more than sufficient to obviate the Scotch 23, but just play along. Also not affiliated with 3M or Ancor)

That being said, thank you for sticking to industry standards. Project Farm is....ok, but that dude clearly doesn't invest much time in reading application notes or industry papers before performing reviews. That would be okay if he had extensive experience with the tooling in the field or something.. but, for example, when you see him take a chainsaw rip, you kinda get the vibe the dudes never bucked a redwood. (I've never logged either, but I've got enough 2-stroke experience to tell the guy is out of his element.) Oh, the Torque Test Channel has proper experimental design too-- he mentioned consulting for Astro on THOR v2 so I'm guessing he must have some experience in light industrial tool design. The fact that you're running type-k thermocouples, understand what a positive displacement pump is, have properly placed gauges to see pressure drop, and are one of the few people who understands cP and cTs (AvE notwithstanding) gives me confidence that you're going in the right direction. Setup a Patreon and keep making high quality videos that answer consumer questions that are obscured by marketing and you'll be making a living off this in no time.

So as an electrical technician 3M make a fiber glass electrical tape which is better to be used on electrical connection that are exposed to extremely high temperatures like your engine bay, which is still cool in comparison to the actual environments where it is meant to be used and for additional protection you tape it over after with the scotch rubber splicing tape. this ensures the best protection for the connection. The only downside may be the residue form the glue when you remove the tape in the future but WD 40 cleans up those with ease.

I recently did some engine wiring harness work on a 2008 Ford Fusion. The OEM electrical tape used in the Ford harness was very different than any black vinyl tape (like the ones in this video) I've ever seen. It is black, but its was thinner, measured 2.5 mils thick, not sure if it's vinyl (like regular electrical tape) or if it's some other type of plastic, does NOT have any adhesive - I guess it was more of wrap. They wrapped it around wires and even around the outside of the corrugated wire loom. They used it to hold together the branching. They did not use normal vinyl electrical tape (with adhesive). Anyone know what this is, and where i can buy it? If I can only get it from Ford, what's the PN, or what is it called?

It's a lot more expensive than we first thought and a lot of work especially when balancing full time jobs, but comments like yours makes it worth it, so thank you again!!!

@@BrandRanks Super glad to hear that. We need as many independent sources as possible to help keep the industry honest and consumers informed. I recommend staying independent a la Project Farm as much as possible, though I see no issue with affiliate links as long as you aren't associated with the company. People eventually convinced Todd to start using affiliate links because they wanted him to make the money. Part of why I didn't get into comparisons was definitely the cost, as well as just how time consuming proper testing can be. So big props!

I’m a water well driller pump installer for over 20 years and electrical tape will hold up under water and be hard to remove after 30 years. We have a green electrical tape that is expensive and only use when necessary but it’s so strong you literally can’t pull it apart if you wanted to unless you twist it up etc but a straight pull by hand it’s not happening 😂

For automotive use Tesa is the absolute best. It's super strong and it doesn't unwrap itself over time from long term heat exposure.

The tapes ability to adhere to the surface it is attached to as well as its self in extreme temperatures is also what helps keep the underlying materials insulated and dry. So I must say that the temp testing that looks poorly in option on tapes that did just this is not accurately prescribed in performance.

I'm not a fan 3M's Super 33+. We use it exclusively at my work, so I've spent a lot of time with it over the last 10 years. I'm an industrial automation/controls electrician. That tape leaves behind a nasty black residue in every installation of it at my work. This appears to only happen with the Super 33+ black. We keep 8 colors on hand and none of the other colors have this problem. This behavior doesn't seem to change regardless of whether it's in a sealed control cabinet or out in one of the varied production environments. I've almost completely stopped using it in favor of a colored 3m tape.
