Thanks for 700 subs! Here's the episode you and I have been waiting for. The IVs are by far my favorite SEPTA trains of all time. So in this video I'll talk about the history of the icon of Regional rail. Enjoy. The Holiday extra video will be coming up real soon.

The IV really is the workhorse of SEPTA nowadays. Just a sturdy, reliable train that's coming on 50 years old. Will be a little bit of a bummer to see them go someday, but they still clearly have plenty of life left in them!

I remember when I visited Philadelphia, I saw 17 Septa trains at 30th Street station. And only 3 Silverliner V we’re there!

I quite like the sound of these units' horns. They sound extremely similar to those fitted to the DFT and DC class diesel locomotives we have in New Zealand. I've noticed that the M7's on the Long Island Railroad also have a similar horn to these Septa units.

Interesting. Every Inbound Trenton Line Train I rode was a V, and they all were on weekend. Also those RS2Ms only sound good when there not broken and squeling ;)

Usually the West Trenton has mainly IVs but they do switch cars around on occasion. and yes I've heard some foul S2Ms before, The reason some squeal is because of a leak in the horn diaphragm causing the air to force through that leak and creates that high pitched screech.

I see. By Trenton Line I meant TTC (NEC). Its also weird because the Trenton and CHE line trainnsets run exclusively on those routes for most of the day on the weekends, and yet all the outbound TTC trains are IV's ;).

There's a railfan known as Retired Railfan Horn Guy that hates the Silverliner IV and prefers the V's! I don't know why. But I prefer the IV.

I have yet to ride a septa train but I am gained a lot of interest in riding the septa r5 because of the rail fan window up front. I wish the New Jersey Transit orders something like septa r5 to replace their arrow units but they already confirmed the order of identical bombardier bi level power units which looks weird and makes the entire fleet appear bland. Great video

I think they will keep the "Subway" door Style. (As in the trains don't have a vestibule like the IV has). Probably keep it simple

Yes because those are easier for wheelchairs or people with bikes to board the train. That's a big advantage in the subway like door style the Vs have.

They'll probably keep that subway like look the Vs have with the center doors and no vestibule in between cars. It was thought they'd look identical to the Vs but since SEPTA most likely wont want anything from Hundai Rotem anymore (Because of the delayed delivery and defects the Vs had) That looks out the window but right now we have no idea. The IVs still have plenty of life in them though even though a few IVs are being repeat offenders with failing dynamics and smokey brakes.

Unfortunately they won't. The FRA has tightened crashworthiness standards and has mandated vestibules out of MUs and no door on the engineer's side of a cab car. So they'll look more like the SL-Vs or LIRR/MN M3s on up.

Them or Alstom Siemens. If built SEPTA might piggyback on NJ Transit multi-level three cars to which there is a power car but you can put between unpowered ones. For septa it would be putting a Bomberdier MLV III power car in a double decker train which is Chinese made even though final assembly is Springfield Massachusetts.

Well I only took it from the audio of an "At the Railyard" video. I just tried to mute the narration out (I cut out that part due to me not needing it and the vocal removal didn't go too great) I looked just about everywhere but found no clean bit of that song which was pissing me off.

They did. They also are showing their age now too. Some cars have had their dynamics burn up which causes lots of smoke by the brake shoes when braking, Let me tell you I had one car at Jenkintown smoke right in front of me and it smelled like burned eggnog! 459 and 460 are usually repeat offenders with that issue so I call them "Smokey"

No they have Arrows which are similar to the IVs only they are younger, and have many physical differences in terms of pantographs and dynamic brakes. They also have WABCO AA-2 horns rather than the Silverliner IVs which have Leslie S2Ms. this video explains their differences too

In a way sort of. SEPTA uses all electric trains (except the diesels used on the wire train or to rescue or haul certain equipment) while NJT has a mix of diesel and electric trains on revenue service

Thanks. and Yes it was announced when they laid out the "Catching Up" plan in 2013. but as I said no timeline of retirement has been given and no one knows what they'll look like or who will build them. So I'd expect we won't hear anything until at least the 2023

Only thing I know from the public hearings is that the SL6 will be a single level EMU. Me and some associates definitely asked if the double deck cars would be SL6 and they explicitly said no lol.

Kawasaki didn't help with building the Vs in anyway but Hundai Rotem definitely wont be considered since the issues the Vs had. No one really knows what they'll look like nor who's going to build them so for now we gotta wait.

SEPTA could have salvaged the doors from the Almond Joys (my favorite cars) and refitted them to the SL-IVs.

Your not alone. Some crews and passengers prefer the Vs and some prefer the IVs. I like the IVs due to the nostalgia, horns, and ride but the Vs have automatic announcements, nice horns, and don't usually have smelly burning dynamics like some IVs

They are located just above the axles and coupling if I remember correctly although you can't see the horn itself unless you were up close to the front of the car and looked hard in the lower part of the front.

The only reason why the Vs had a manufacturing defect was because SEPTA took the lowest entered bid for the V contract. Bombardier submitted a more expensive bid, but SEPTA turned them down for the cheaper option (Hyundai Rotem). If SEPTA wasn’t cheap they wouldn’t have gotten a defective product. SEPTA also went with Hyundai Rotem to manufacture the double level passenger cars for the push-pull engines. I don’t think SEPTA learned their lesson.

I know you grew up with SEPTA and its your fav commuter line and I mean no offense. But personally don’t like SEPTA because I think that the coloring of the cars are lazy. Like 95% of the cars are unpainted. I didn’t mean to offend any SEPTA fan out there it’s just my opinion and if that had offended a few people I’m sorry.

Well not exactly. Some Vs and Comet cars get advertisements plastered onto the sides and I don't think they're mostly unpainted with the exception of the IVs because of their rough retro build you'd see on train cars from the 60s and 70s.

They don't paint the steel because that makes them easier to clean and maintain by having less to paint or clean up. And trust me, they look better in plain steel than painted.

Thunderbolt 1000 Siren Productions though I’ve only ridden the Wilmington-Newark I very much agree with you, however the V’s on this line are very smooth but, as I said before, the IV’s are very bumpy. But that’s just my opinion. Feel free to correct if you think I’m wrong.
