Backed by a large away support, Denmark claim a priceless 1-0 win at Wembley against England in September 1983 in a European Championship Qualifier. England create few opportunities during the evening and are punished by Allan Simonsen's first half penalty. Luther Blissett comes closest to rescuing England in the dying seconds. The win leaves the impressive Danes in the driving seat to qualify for the finals and they duly do so at England's expense. Commentary by Brian Moore and Brian Clough.

I was lucky to witness this match at Wembley in my first visit to the UK. I was on a fellowship in Sport Journalism there. Co-organizer of the program, British Olympic Association, arranged a trip for all 52 participant sports journalists from 35 countries to have first hand experience of a live international football match at Wembley where England was playing. In fact, fellow participating journalists were already familiar with the England national football team since we were staying at the Bisham Abbey sport centre at Maidenhead where the England team was having their training camp. Bryan Robson was, as so often, injured and England fielded a "dynamic" midfield three of Ray Wilkins, Sammy Lee and John Gregory. No wonder it was the last minute before they got a shot on target.

England had been undefeated in 82 World Cup and had failed to qualify for the 1970s World cups despite a huge supply of excellent players and good teams...post 82, the calibre of the team changed and went into transition...Denmark were superb talents emerging...

I remember the build-up to this game. Bobby Robson talked up the Danes so much, anyone would have thought that they were world champions. It was almost as if he were looking to make excuses BEFORE we even played them! I'm almost convinced that because of that, England went into the match fearing the Danes, when there were no need to.

Denmark went all the way to the semifinals in European championships in 1984 and bearly lost to Spain on penalty shootout, so I do believe that it did made sense to fear the Danes. Afterall Denmark was at this time, a better football team than England was

Denmark actually beat France a year before the opening match. Never heard that England had respect for Denmark. I know Denmark had lot of respect for England. Dont think they planned to win at Wimpley. They were going to make the best of it. If Bobby Robson had that kind of respect, well he saw the names on the National team. While Danes had no idea how good they were on the National team. Still to be seen. They had big names on the National team before, that did not lead anywhere. Although they did made some remarkable games. They beat the world champions Italy. Quite funny though. Dont blame Robson, it's the players, that did not took it seriously, after all little Denmark

Elkjaer twisted his ankle a day before the game in a training accident... Laudrup came in for him..Read the book Danish Dynamite, a classic football book.

Denmark winning at Wembley through a not too obvious penalty in the first half, the goal scored by a world-class player who had his best years behind him. 1983 and 2020. :)

The 92 team was not good at all and we only won because of Schmeichel and Brian Laudrup. It hurts to say that Germany deserved to win the final

That save in the end was probably the only save he ever made for the Danish national team. Ole Qvist was a class keeper at the time and played most of the matches. Qvist came on again after this and showed world class in the European Championship shortly after.
