England beat Scotland 3-1 at Wembley in May 1971 to win the Home International Championship. All the goals come in the first half, with Martin Peters and Martin Chivers (2) on target for England and Hugh Curran netting Scotland's effort. Chivers has his hat-trick goal ruled out after the break.

Aa a 16 year old I was working at the Greyhound pub, by Wembley Triangle. A Scot gave me a ticket at ten to three. I ran up to the stadium getting in just in time for Peters goal, although I did not see it. Two Scots finally made room for me on their cases of beer and I graciously accepted beers without opening my mouth, but as a Spurs supporter I could not contain myself when Chivers, hit the net. I expected to get the crap beaten out of me, instead they congratulated me and gave me another beer. Hooray for the Scots

There was nothing like the old Wembley stadium, it just looked iconic and held so much history. I guess it would have been too expensive to just refurbish it. You’d have thought that the architects could have designed something better for the replacement.

When they thought about rebuilding the new stadium why didn't they ensure the changing rooms were kept at the end of the stadium in order for the players to walk the length of the pitch? This was all part of the iconic Wembley and is sorely missed and obviously it was designed by a non football supporter who knew nothing of why the old Wembley was so iconic!

The previous season England were very fortunate to escape with a scoreless draw at Hampden Park but this time around at Wembley England confirmed their superiority over Scotland with an emphatic 3-1 victory at Wembley in this 1971 Home Championship match. The visitors had hoped to repeat their sensational 3-2 victory over the then world champions four years back at the same venue but their hopes were dashed with Martin Chivers scoring a brace and Martin Peters the other.

@@pr0methian No one can tell fom the TV footage. The referee gave itso it was a goal. The linesman cannot be seen but seems to have had an uniterrupted of the goal line. There was no cosultation so it would seem that both officials were satisfied it was a goal. I any case, the only thing to stop the ball hitting the backof the net was John Greig's hand. Whether the ball was in or out, the referee's decision was hardly a miscarrige of justice.

I was born on May 12th 1971 and this game was live on tv shortly after my birth. My mother said she would name me after the first England player to score but after Martin Peters scored she said she didn't like that name and so she would name me after the next England player to score, when Martin Chivers scored she still wasn't sure, until he scored again to seal the deal, it was therefore ordained and I was to be called Martin. This is the first time I have ever watched this game and I am thankful that Franny Lee never scored😂

From a Scotland point of view , there seemed to be an over reliance on Anglo-Scots during this period - the assumption from the Scottish manager ( Bobby Brown ) being that if the Scottish player played in England therefore should be better than the Scot playing in his own league , which was nonsense . Tony Green and Hugh Curran were decent enough players , but no better that the likes of Rangers' Colin Stein and Celtic's Kenny Dalglish.

Lots of talented English players missed out in the 1970s for various reasons. Off the top of my head, Tony Currie, Peter Osgood, Alan Hudson, Dave Thomas. Unimaginative managers was a fairly big factor.

An example of Ramsay's schizophrenic selection policy. Allan Clarke scored on his debut in the 1970 World Cup finals and Ramsay kept him in the team for the 70/71 season he scored 3 more goals, and then wasn't picked for another 2 years. He wasn't one of the maverick generation like Marsh/Bowles/Worthington, so what was going on. Perhaps he just didn't rate him.
