Our Boi Ferdinand (Head Priest) be flexing. Imma say flexing on the WHOLE Knight order (as we already know at this point) Honestly my favorite scene in the whole series.
"I'm a high-ranking nobleman, I can do anything I want!" "Yeah, rank does hold power here. If only we had someone of even higher rank around to slap the stupid out of you-- _OH WAIT, THAT WOULD BE ME!!"_
Schicicoza: "I'm a high-ranking nobleman, I can do anything I want!" Head Priest: "And **I** am a **HIGHER** ranking noble and can **ORDER YOU** to do anything **I** want!"

Yea basically, only this wasn’t just directed that as A**hole. But also Damuel. “I gave you the order to protect her. And my status is WAY higher than that DipSh*t, you should had just kick his dumb ass, and punch his face in. Since you would be in the right, and be ‘following your order by the highest ranking officer’ but you miss your only chance.”
Hopefully we still keep getting new seasons of this show, because later on in the LN, Myne (under Ferdinand's tutelage) pulls a similar ploy on another jerk high on himself.
Literally. The enemy was a fucking tree. All they had to do was *nothing*. They could have literally just whipped out a deck of cards and shirked guard duty entirely and still have completed their mission as commanded. The only way to fail was to do the *opposite* of what they were ordered to do and harm the person they were ordered to protect.
Considering how much mana Main has, they might not have been able to beat it even if they weren't already exhausted from the last one. Bro almost created the uber tree
When I first seen this episode.. I fucking died laughing after practically crying over myne damn near dying and calling out to Lutz. First case of sad and happy tears at the same time ever in recorded history folks.
@@SheetMan It isn't terrible. The only performance that was troublesome was karstedt and myne. I think myne is voiced by lilypichu and it takes me out. Karstedt voice actor sounds like he has a bit of lazy mouth.

I know a lot of people don't like Myne's dub voice but I gotta say I quite like it, sounds like it actually belongs to a 7 year old girl and not like most child characters voiced by adults where they obviously have voices way too deep for their age. It does sound off from time to time but overall this is one of the few times I prefer dub to sub.
That’s something I wish people would take into account. The character is a young child and unless you have an actual child actor the options for voicing them are either using a little kid voice (like here) or just saying “f it” and not doing anything to sound young.
Yeah I personally love her voice she sounds like a kid without that overly annoying high pitched voice so many shows do. Her VA does a good job and I can feel her excitement about books when it goes well and her disappointment and frustration when it doesn't.
There is something deeply upsetting about this sort of society. Even when the justice is aimed in the right direction, its not for the right reasons. This man is only being punished for violating orders and for insulting those higher ranked than him by assaulting and mocking those they have chosen for various reasons. Not for assaulting a little girl and general a*sholishness. For those of us who have grown up in a society where, nominally at least, the law applies to everyone equally, being in a society where the law is basically higher ranked = right, would be maddening in the extreme.
Even more upsetting is when you grow up to realize that's EXACTLY the society we live in today - one justice system for the rich & powerful and a completely different one for everyone else.
@@muninrob That's only partially true. I'll admit that the justice system is very often pay to win, but its still a vast improvement over how things were even a couple centuries ago, let alone during the feudal era.

@@goodhore yeah, basically, what shikikoza said was still true, the higher rank still hold power wheter it was truth or not. This is also the reason Ferdinand is always wary of his enemies, cause a little slip would cause him a problem.
Shikikooza was in fact executed, due to "Disobeying the orders of archnobles as a mere mednoble and speaking out against the archduke in such a blatant fashion are all severe crimes." his family was at risk to. But they disowned him before the ceremony of death.
His Family have disowned him but a mother having to place here child in church for having low mana. Then given the opportunity to have him back because of the lack of mana in the kingdom. Then have him be executed because of a commoner with mana. Nothing more dangerous than a woman scorned.
@@SMmania123 There was another key detail you missed, in that he was executed for failing to live up to his ordered duties. In order to prevent him from harming anyone else that he would be "protecting", he was executed.

I agree.. not even moments earlier from practically crying that she called out to Lutz to the palate cleansing of this entire scene just makes this anime such a goodie
I loved this series so much I started reading the light novel. Then I read the WN with Google translate to finish it. By far one of the most enjoyable stories I've read in a long time.
@@reazulzannah738 the light novel translations are of very high quality and are very easy to read. The best quality web novel translations that I can find are almost unreadable.
@@reazulzannah738 I find the Ln did a bit better job building the relationship of myne and Ferdinand. He dream sequence was a bit different and I think it carried more impact in the LN because it was called back to later. Though I think the anime is still close enough to the Ln that it's not like you are getting a different story. Just a few extra details here and there.
It kind of surprises me that Ferdinand didn't crush him accidentally. I mean he was extremely mad at Shikza for hurting Myne and placing her in mortal danger. Ferdinand did already lose his cool once in the Light Novels and crushed Wilfried (didn't happen in the Anime yet for obvious reasons) so my question is why didn't the first crushing from Ferdinand not happen right here? He had a good reason to and even behaved in the right way to lose control of his mana.
@@sharkhaha9770 Wilfried is the first son of Sylvester the Archduke. Actually we will meet Sylvester in the new 3rd season/3rd part of the anime. Wilfried is very similar to his father. He has the same facial features and the same hair style. His behavior is also similar to his father's past behavior. He can't sit still, is hyperactive and doesn't really care what is said to him. Due to his messed up upbringing Wilfried hat a lot of issues and bad habits that cost him the guaranteed succession to the title of Aub Ehrenfest. It was actually so bad that Ferdinand requested that he was taken off the line of succession because of his incompetence which automatically made Rozemyne aka Myne the next in line to become Aub because unlike in our world where its almost always the oldest male child that succeeds his parents, in their world ones Mana capacity decides that. That's actually the reason why Sylvester as incompetent, lazy and unpredictable as he his became Aub instead of his older sister Georgine who was married off as a third wife to the Greater Duchy Ahrensbach. Anway Wilfried throughout most of the series stays a oblivious fool and an idiot when compared to Rozemyne, who in the eyes of many, is a saint, a beauty and a genius.
Nah, Ferdinand is a master of self-control. If he was wild enough to let a little pissant like Shikza/Shikikoza get him mad enough to start accidentally crushing people, he’d have never survived Veronica’s abuse back in the day.
@@Xenobears taking abuse from your stepmother who has higher standing in both society and family is completely different from insubordination of a subordinate Knight who hurt someone dear to you. The actual reason why Ferdinand didn't crush him stems from the Anime falsely portraiting the behavior of the characters. Karstedt was far more vocal in the novel than in the anime while Ferdinand while still enraged didn't cuss out Shikza like he did in the anime. He may have been more controlled but he was still mad as hell. Shikza getting crushed would've shown how much Ferdinand cares for Myne.
@@EUM_NEMESIS the abuse is why he had to master self-control. If he had allowed his emotions to run rampant and accidentally ended up crushing Veronica, she’d have used it as an excuse to have him killed or imprisoned and turned into a mana battery. Ferdinand is, at this point, the type of character to put rationality and the greater good ahead of emotion-it’s part of the reason why he goes out of his way to help Main (and he felt responsible for allowing the head priest/archbishop Bezewanst to antagonize her so much before trying to step in, so even though he’d deny it, he was a little emotion-driven). He doesn’t really start getting attached until after he uses the artifact to enter Main’s mind and see her memories of Japan. Up to that point, he’d been steeling himself to kill her if necessary for the good of the duchy if she had been an enemy agent. Main’s strong emotions really affected Ferdinand and he had never felt so horrible. After that, he’s still a strict mentor, but he does start softening a bit-going out of his way to create better tasting potions, proactively protecting Main, and really getting hacked off at his own second-favorite subordinate for playing games that put Main in danger during the abduction incident (he had the man killed-we learn this when he tells Karstadt that the subordinate climbed the golden staircase).
Makes sick how the nobles treat the poor/lower class like trash because they believe themselves better than them. Threatening and hurting someone like that just because they're poor is inhumane.
Well... That's how class system works. This is a mostly medieval type of world with rules in line with medieval times. The country Myne is in is a kingdom and the citizenry don't really elect their administration...
Its more than just because they’re poor, its because they dont have mana so their seen as just a resource. Its a super harsh society even to the nobles
As commoners generally don’t posess any significant amount of mana, most nobles don’t see them as anything more than stray dogs. In their eyes, it’s not inhumane, as they barely even consider them people to begin with. Not even noble children are considered people by society until their baptism, and some laynoble children are left for dead or reduced to servants if they lack too much mana and the family can’t afford to send them to the temple.
When I first saw this. I half expected Ferdinand to send forth a turbulent wind causing Shikza to flounder about while having an overly-dramatic mental breakdown by the sheer force of Ferdinand's accusation.
Shikikoza: She's a plebeian. Me: Flexing your muscles on a child, are you? Damn, how fucking brave you are... Even worse, it's a child with enough mana to crush an entire batallion of trash like you with one spell and only didn't do it because she's not trained and too scared. So by all means flex you muscles while you can. Oh wait, you cannot. Because you forgot that Ferdinand is also here.
Seriously. A grown-ass man bullying, insulting, and physically attacking a preteen girl, with whose safety he was charged by his superior officer. What a shining example of noble dignity and knightly honor. Piece of shit.
If you switch the concept "Magic Powers = Privilege" into "Money = Privilege", boom there you go. Our society ain't so much different than theirs really.
But they have a difference: you can make some money even if you have none at the moment. But you can't get more mana if you wasn't born with any. That's why it's almost impossible for commoner to become a noble.
Wait what... they changed what Damuel said quite drastically. In the original he gave in to Shikikoza and said that when he was ordered to go away he did and thus did not see what happened. But here he outright confirms what Myne said thus Shikikoza's smug look and Myne's fear make no sense in context... I don't have an issue with the rest of the scene, but that one line for Damuel was a mistake in my opinion.
@@abyssaljoey7695 In a way I guess... but that still does not alleviate the issue of Shikikoza's reaction. In the book Damuel spilled the beans to Karstedt while Myne was still being cut out of the trombe, with neither Shikikoza nor Ferdinand hearing their conversation. Once they are kneeling in front of Ferdinand, Damuel keeps his quiet, thus it makes sense in the book for Shikikoza to be so confident and smug. But as I said here his mannerisms really contradict what he just heard from Damuel. To move Damuel's comment over to this scene would have required more than merely changing his line I think.
@@Norbert_Sattler It genunely depends on how good a person's hearing is, what direction they're facing (ear toward the sound, for example, vs at a right angle), and how much they are concentrating on their task. @@timthewarlord2304 yup, Ferdinand here is the half brother of the archduke, and disloyalty to the ruling family is punishable by death. The other knight assigned to guard her was supposed to be executed as well, but myne asking for mercy saved his life. Now he is her most loyal guard
Fun fact: in the Japanese dub, the green-haired noble used “are” when referring to Myne, so a closer translation would be “that” or “it” as opposed to “she”. No fault to the localization team, though. They got the point across, which is the most important part of their job.
The hard part with this is that it's not uncommon to do that in Japanese, doing that in English means something very different from what they're trying to do. It's like trying to translate one of the words for "you" to English, it'll be lost on a vast majority of viewers and those that do understand it might not expect it and missing it.
@@SherrifOfNottingham I don’t envy localizers or translators at all. It doesn’t help that so many languages have unique nuances that can’t be quickly conveyed (especially the dubs, which are limited by lip flaps). I’m just glad we know the general idea of what’s going on.
I don't want to criticize the voice actors too much on the quality of their voice acting because of the threat of covid, especially considering some might have had to record from their homes. But this kind of dubbing is exactly why I don't listen to English dubs. There's not very much quality control when it comes to anime voice acting. There were quite a few problems with this scene and I'm not about to point out all of them, but at 4:29 when Ferdinand's VC delivers the line it's quite clear he was reading a poorly translated script. "Hurry. We need you to finish the ritual while the potion is still effective." It's very direct and straight to the point, which is typical of poorly translated scripts. I mean, Ferdinand literally walked away instead of speed walking, it's clear he's not in a hurry. This is what he would've said instead if they were to make it sound more natural: "Let us return, we need to complete the ritual while the potion is still in effect."
Also as a disclaimer, while some of these issues are caused by the voice actors, the majority of the blame goes to the anime studio in charge of recording their lines, as most of these errors wouldn't have happened if it weren't for them.
He pulled into reverse. He's like I'm the highest rank and I told you what to do when you disobeyed orders intentionally and then he humiliates the guy by saying your minor is so pathetic. Now I see why the Knights roster is truly depleted cuz they let you scrubs in
