I too am a Filipino of born decent but i look like an arab man.. A Pakistani at that and i am always mistaken for a foreigner and an arab at that.. Even service personnels in different venues mistake me for a foreigner and i at times ride their misconception by me speaking english in an arab style approach and then suddenly i speak the Filipino language and they get surprised but at times i don't cobvert my toungue from english to filipino but stick with it until i leave the place. And it just makes me laugh hard afterwards.

People just automatically start speaking to me in English and sometimes I just go with it lol. I thought for sure that they wouldn't be able to tell with my mask on, but they still do it lmao

Im learning tagalog for my fiance and for myself because i live in southern california and theres a large filipino population down here. As much as i try i dont think my accent will ever ever ever be perfect. So i wouldnt focus on that for him. Make him feel comfortable. So that he actually wants to speak in front of you and learn. If u talk about his accent a lot or giggle too much he might become too shy or discouraged. Ive had a real hard time progressing because i hate being giggled at but every time i speak i get giggled at by filipinos they say its because "it sounds cute" but like bruh im trying to find the bathroom tulungan mo ako. 🤣

As someone who is trying to learn tagalog i would too also love to see some subtitles for the more unclear portions or dialogue. Sometimes u can get the gest by actions but when there is a personal conversation happening subtitles would be very nice.
