Engraving Copper for DEPTH with a 20W Fiber Laser

Here's an attempt to find some settings on my 20w laser that will engrave deeply in copper. Marking times and settings are included as well as verification of depth with an indicator. Results were pretty good.

I just set a 200w fiber laser up with scanner , been awhile since I ran a laser nice to reference back videos like this

Jeff, Can you tell me what fiber laser you are running? I'm trying to engrave somewhere between .005 and .007 deep on both copper and brass. I've been looking around and there are a lot of options. The one in your video seems to really do the trick. If you could share I would appreciate it. Thanks Sean.

it would be amazing if you tried this on PCB. Just some lines that are getting close and closer together. Maybe from 20 mils to 3 mils. see if it all holds up and how many passes it takes. 1oz copper clad FR4 is about 3.5 mils thick.

That depth shouldn't be an issue, but I don't know anything about marking a circuit board.

is it true to say that the edges are very sharp and barely not frayed? If yes: the laser cuts / marks down straight and even with several passes doesn't fray the edges? Your method of getting knowledge with laser settings in different materials is exemplary. thank you very much.

You'll notice a bit of a burr on the top edge of the engraving, that's about it.

Jeff, I’m completely exhausted here. Been at this three hours. 80W MOPA, 175 lens. Ran your settings, got nothing. Ran Power/frequency grid and got only the slightest of shadow marks on the surface. What am I doing wrong?

Hey really thanks man...i would definetely give it a try with same settings and get back to u.But a very big problem is i couldnt get "that big blue spark on metal"..which kinda gives a feel of engraving right...i even adjusted my head positions too....and i used a power,speed settings which can "easily cut steel plate"

Maybe just run through the settings I used and copy everything. Give the hatch settings that I used a shot (it's just the line spacing between filler marks). Your laser is quite a bit more powerful than mine, so you probably won't need such high power to do the same thing. Also, make sure you have adjusted your head height for the thickness of the material.

@@xenoreaper339 Just out of curiosity, if you start marking a piece of copper - then gradually lower the height of the laser head while marking, will the spark intensify? Maybe as much as 5mm below the focal point...

Why you ues dial gauge lile that, there are vertiap dial gaugle with nidfle probe for that measurement purpose.. more accurate i think

I have a 30watt fiber laser and I can't get it to mark pure copper regardless of settings.

need smaller lens for smaller spot size. my 30w with 175x175 lens wont touch copper at all, but with 110x110 lens it rips it apart even at 50% power.

pcb using very thin copper in theory one or two pass should cut trough the copper

Hi thanks for your videos. Do you have a conversion factor from a 20w or 30w to 50w to give me a starting point as I’m unable to find many settings for 50w fibre laser this on the net. Cheers

Hey so for example if 1 run will do 1mm so running same program 10 times will create 10mm deep design or not so much?

Unfortunately, that's not always the case. There is slag present on repeat passes which will make the process less efficient.

@@jefferyj What if i put the things i want to mark on jig or something to keep it in its position, marking it several times, blow the slag with air or wipe it out with brush or something? It will do the deep mark better, will it?

1 Thousandth of an inch (0.001") is roughly 0.025mm.

The ebay seller I purchased from no longer sells the laser. It was just a seller based in California. If you buy from ebay, make sure to ask the seller beforehand if the laser has a genuine BJJCZ board. If they don't know you can ask them which version of EzCad is included....you want 2.14, not the older 2.7 or 2.9 versions that works with the counterfeit cards.
