Enjoying Social Media in a Guilt-Free Way

There are many discussions around the harmful effects of social media. In this video, I take a slightly different stance and discuss how social media by itself is not necessarily bad. Rather the problem lies in how we engage with social media. Broadly I discuss the following aspects:
Breaking free from doomscrolling
Breaking free from facebook (specifically)
Breaking free from the algorithm
I discuss how self-curated lists of videos to watch and things to read based on our own conscious tastes and preferences can help us get back active control of what we consume instead of being mindlessly served by the algorithm.

I overcome addiction by keep busying me . I fill my life with lot of stuff like books of different topic from economics to geography. Even for my studies i stop using pdf books and purchase hardcopy and often complete assignment in library . gym in morning and tennis in evening. Roaming around my city with friends on bike . Learning to drive car . And all this stuff left me no time for not only mobile but all worldy addictions 😜 .

Respected Sir, We can save ourselves from RU-vid algorithm by turning off RU-vid watch history. Then their feed will be turned off.And use browser extension to stop using the social media randomly by assigning a certain amount of time for certain social media. Currently I don't use any social media. Except RU-vid for my study purpose. Previously once I had used Twitter but now I found it causing harm in my studies so I deleted my Twitter account also. Thank you sir for speaking on this topic.

But somehow they get to know what we like because I also turned off both search and watch history but whenever I open YT I see clickbait thumbnail from some reputed coaching like how to score 99%ile in 2 month etc. Results in time wastage

Ways I have overcomed youtube addiction:- 1. Paused search and watch history. 2. Deleted previous search and watch history. Results:- No yt shorts or videos are recommended on my home page. If I need to watch something I search it up and see or go to the subscribed channels list. This helped me a lot for preventing myself from seeing anything which may cause distraction from studies and a peaceful life.

Well said Professor. Social media is just consuming a lot of time. It’s so addictive at times. Sometimes, I feel these smart phones or internet were not present, during my school and college days, if not my grades would have hugely fallen. It sometimes starts with five minutes of usage and turns out to be an hour or so. This video is definitely meant for me. On the other hand, I find few RU-vidrs who start exposing their new born babies in their video. I used to wonder, will it not affect the kids while in their developmental stage, if they are being put on excessive spot light all the time. Some kind of false sense of pride to those tiny minds, making them feel excessively superior.
@Prof_JC
@Prof_JC 5 месяцев назад
Thank you. You are right ... sometimes parents compare themselves with their kids saying that they did not do such and such things in their own childhood. However, it must not be forgotten that some of the temptations did not even exist during their own childhood! You have highlighted an important point about exposing young children in the vlogs. Personally, I do NOT like such vlogs.
@sandhya5236
@sandhya5236 5 месяцев назад
@@Prof_JC yes Sir. I personally feel that, our parents have been very lucky, compared to this generation parents. This social media is like a double edged sword. So need to be really really careful. Our parents, just had to worry about the threats outside the home, but for this gen parents, it’s both outside and inside.

Sir, I broke the algorithm and came to you, I am in my final year btech at IIT Guwahati, we all curse our professor for giving us bad grades 😂😅 but we all know that we didn't study hard enough to achieve that, but Deep inside trust me sir we have great respect for you, none of any influence us but you do, I wish I have this type of meaningful conversation with my proffs and know their struggles and motivation that keep them going. Everyone around me my seniors, influencers( youtube/ movies) pushed us to get skills but they never told what those skills really are is it coding, finance or industry-demand skills?? But now i realised it's none of them rather the real skill is the ability to learn, adapt, reading, analysing, problem solving and most importantly thinking. I sometimes regret that i didn't gave much focus on my academics and followed the herd mentality of doing coding and all that 😅. Sir, I hope you will keep making these videos, because you are the real genuine person who has the authority to influence and guide others (not some random guy on internet with no credentials to do so).

Best way; Uninstall the social media apps from your smartphone, and if you've an urge to use your social media, then try to open in web browser - advantage web browsers are slow, and short videos don't run smoothly, so bad user experience let you away from it.

I've recently binge-read your blog posts. For the kind of person I am, the text format feels much better than a video format. Wonder, how many of my kind are there in your audience! Regardless, if time permits you, it would be nice to read new posts on your blog. A new post every 1-2 months. Not the technical ones about vim or latex, but the more general ones about life. "Regrets when I turned thirty" was as awesome read!

@@Prof_JC Your articles on this magazine site look very interesting; i.e. I now have reading material for the next few days! The video / audio format automatically makes my brain want to multi task and induces lethargy. Its only while reading that I feel fully immersed in the content. Don't stress too much with your blog. Write only if you have time and organic ideas. Unlike mainstream social media which often centers around "content creation" on a specific category, I see blogs as a reflection of a person's mind. You read it not only because you want that content, but also because you like the person's thoughts. Understandably, in the phase of life you are in, days do get busy and priorities shift. Its fine if you aren't getting time to write :)

Sir, for the language part as you said we should develop a reading habit and should try to get into the depth of the literal meaning of the text as well as what we could add on and writing our owns thoughts etc. Sir, i enjoy reading books but not sure what book would be more effective and beneficial for students like us in order to develop an ability of critical thinking. A humble request to you please do share your views and book that can possible create a difference. Thankyou 😊

You have very beautifully elaborated the need to control technology for our advantage and not the other way round with the example on social media. I do agree, it has become a challenge in today's day for people to handle social media. Prof. Yuval Noah Harari explains how algorithms control our lives and how the future could with the development of AI. But on a deeper level, I would say, the examples you gave also applies to life in general. One needs to be in control of one's choices. Like you, at some stage I was very active on Facebook. Ten year ago, one fine morning, I simply deactivated it. To this day I dont regret it!!

Respected Sir,(I know it's a long comment, but please do read it, as it is damn important for us!!) Recently, i watched a movie named, "The Man Who Knew Infinity". It's based upon the life of Sir Srinivasa Ramanujan Ji - one of the greatest and the finest mathematicians of all time. It actually made me curious and confused both at the same time, by seeing his way to approach mathematics. His way of seeing those equations and numbers- which at a first glance seems very normal to me but for him they actually reveal a particular pattern. I've always thought how these great mathematicians and Scientists of all time actually approach the same text written for the subject in such a different and beautiful way? They always seem so much happier in decoding the true nature of things happening around ourselves, as if their minds always wants to do it. I've also encountered another rare quality of 'GETTING ABSORBED IN WORK' in them. How can someone be so much absorbed in whatever they are doing, that they don't even bother about what's going outside. There are tons of Questions in my mind on this topic, as i read about these great personalities and their way to see the true nature of the subject. It'll be a great pleasure if you can guide us on how can someone develop that sense of observation? Is our way to approach the subject wrong? How can we also see the beauty that lies in them as these personalities do? Hope you'll reply to these doubts as i love doing Maths and Physics, but by seeing the unique way of these scientists , i always feel that i still lack somewhere. Thanks a lot for reading my comment.

I have a doubt: NaCl + H2O --> NaOH+ Cl2 + H2 In electricity Suppose for e.g A man has eaten salt and it hasn't yet been digested and at as he has water in body and at the same time he gets electric shock then what would happen? I know how irrelevant this is. Kindly help

Sir I had a doubt regarding fixed axis rotation of a body Kindly answer if you see plzzzz So the question is:- Suppose there is a rod pivoted on an axis on a table and yiu applied a force of magnitude "F" at the rear end of the rod away from the pivot So when you applied the force at the rear end, the body being rigid,all the other points also started roatating,so there must be some torque acting on them as well,so what magnitude of torque will be acting on the other points,is the torque at every point of the rod same,different(in sense of increasing or decreasing towards pivot)? Whatever I have got is that the torque acting on the points should be in a decreasing manner towards the pivot,still I amn't sure,kindly explain

Hello sir actually i am here to tell you about my feelings i am feeling extremely anxious and the reason is i belong from sc ( sheduled caste ) and after seeing lots of discrimination against sc ,st in iit i lost my confidence courage motivation to get into iit and now i start feeling that iit are places were only generals and obc have right to study i didn't able to sleep from last 4 days i am preparing for jee but now everything seems to vanished when i already know same discrimination i have to face there

I am not against any caste. Very honestly, you need to put yourself in the other person's shoes and think how they feel about it. One person with 60 percentile gets a seat and another person with 99 percentile doesn't get. Purely because of this concept called reservation. This guy belongs to this generation and has not harmed anyone for caste reasons and even had people of other castes as friends during childhood. But his friend with a much less mark gets into a dream college. Don't you think there will be some anger in their hearts? Be honest. Nothing wrong with anyone's caste. We are all humans. But why does one person get a better seat with much lesser mark, that's the problem here. Whatever happened 100 years ago, the kids of this generation are not responsible. Trust me, no one hates any caste. We want everyone to be equal too. That works both ways. If admission is held equally, even treatment will be equal. No one talks about caste in such a manner in colleges like BITS, manipal and VIT. Not that there are no SCs there. Just that they didn't use that card to get there, so everyone is treated equally. It's an unfortunate fact in this country, no political party has the guts to get rid of it, because they want votes, and they want to retain this divide in society because it's easier to divide and rule.

@@ushar6892I totally agree with you buddy.There is no hate against any caste in our hearts. For example even our Indian president draupadi murmu is a sc who earned her seat with hardwork and talent.

I have more to add to the person who posted the original message and all SC/STs and I guess even JC sir might agree with me (though he may not admit on a public forum). There are people from SC/ST community who are extremely hardworking and talented and do great things in life. Even I have a friend who was from non-English medium (her brothers were sent to English medium schools by her parents) and she's the one working in an IT MNC now while her brothers are struggling in their careers. I am not referring to these exceptions. What I noticed is that thanks to this reservation, some SC/ST students' think that this much is enough to get you into IITs/NITs, basically normalising mediocrity. You have no idea how much of a struggle and pressure a general category boy has to undergo to get a seat. Their bar is set extremely high from school days when middle class parents tell them that if you want to get into a top IIT, you have to be the best of the best. They slog day and night for years and then secure a seat there. Obviously when an SC/ST candidate who has worked much less in school days, got a lower rank comes to the same college and has to compete with this general category student, it becomes very challenging. Professors can also find it frustrating when some students are picking up well and some are hardly able to follow what's happening in class. In order to know why they are struggling, the end up asking for the student's JEE rank and realise that ok, this person has come via quota, their qualifying rank is lower, their fundamentals are not as strong as the others. And these students take it as a jibe on their caste. They don't realise that the professor didn't ask the rank to ridicule their caste. @workaholicgirl, since you are still an aspirant, if you are really good enough to get into IIT, why don't you give up the caste card, apply as a general category student and see how it feels. You will know the struggle and you will be on par with them on your basics when you enter the college. And if you work hard and secure a seat without reservation, that satisfaction will be on a different level and no one will point fingers at you. End of the day, there is no shortcut to success and if you use a shortcut, somewhere it will hit you. All the best.

Big picture: You have to do it, not for yourself but for the society, it's your duty to do your karm. If not you are a selfish person. Surrender all your attachments of mind to mahadev and perform with no attachments. Forget about wining and losing and just perform as it is your duty. Small picture: Work in a loop. Start a task and do it for 40 minutes with no distraction and after 40 min reward yourself with something you like. For example, eat you favourite candy or play football for 10 minutes and repeat the cycle again. This way your attention span will increase and you will be disciplined.
