Enneagram Type Five in Film and Television

Taking a deeper look at the Enneagram Type Five by showing examples from film and television.
From the Enneagram Institute: "Fives are alert, insightful, and curious. They are able to concentrate and focus on developing complex ideas and skills. Independent, innovative, and inventive, they can also become preoccupied with their thoughts and imaginary constructs. They become detached, yet high-strung and intense. They typically have problems with eccentricity, nihilism, and isolation. At their Best: visionary pioneers, often ahead of their time, and able to see the world in an entirely new way."
Note: This video is not a statement that every character shown is 100% a Type Five. Most are fictional creations and might have characteristics of multiple Enneagram types that a real person would never have. Rather, it's a montage of characters acting in a specific way in a specific scene that demonstrates some attributes of an Enneagram Type Five.

Great video, and I think it also captures how the vast majority of 5-ish characters in media are men. If female 8s are one of the most misunderstood types, I think female 5s are one of the most underrepresented. As a woman and a 5, I really enjoyed watching Beth in “The Queen’s Gambit,” though she’d probably qualify as an unhealthy 5 for most of the series. I hope we continue to see even more representations of women who are analytical, thoughtful, complex, and no less feminine for it.

@@TypeCast I think Lisbeth Salander from Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Belle from Beauty and the Beast (especially the live action) are 5s. Also, Agatha Christie was a type 5 and there is a movie that has someone playing her, called Agatha and the Truth of Murder. Emma from Once Upon a Time shows some traits of an unhealthy five when she talks about how she doesn’t want people relying on her to save them, and she tries to skip town to escape her responsibility without telling anyone, though I think she is a 6w5. Stevie from Schitts Creek shows a lot of 5 traits, and says a lot of sarcastic things a 5 would say, though she may be a 6w5. Also, Annabeth Chase from Percy Jackson is a 5, but the Percy Jackson movies don’t really portray her accurately.

I’ve been thinking about this, and like you said, it’s really difficult! I think a pretty strong case could be made for Rory from “Gilmore Girls” being a 5, and not just because she fits the bookworm stereotype. Her whole identity is based on being perceived as competent, and she shows 7 traits when she’s unhealthy and 8 traits when she integrates. Also, it might be an unpopular opinion, but I think Elizabeth Bennet from “Pride and Prejudice” (2005) could be a 5 that defies the “shy/antisocial” stereotype. Some other possibilities could be Professor McGonagall from Harry Potter, Scully from “X-Files,” and Pepper Potts from the Marvel Universe. I’m not as confident in those, though, because McGonagall and Potts aren’t as well-developed, and I’ve only seen a few episodes of “X-Files.” Also, I couldn’t think of a single example of a fully developed 5-ish woman of color character. 😕
@TypeCast

@@thegreatcatsbee I've heard a couple talk about Gilmore Girls, so I'll have to "investigate" it (little Five joke there). The only one I'll fight you on is McGonagall... pretty sure she's a Type One. Characters of color were also difficult for me. As a white guy growing up in "white culture", that's where most of my pop-culture knowledge comes from. Any other 5s that think they are actually intensely emotional, despite appearing detached and cold? I experience my detachment as stemming from the fear of my emotional intensity, as well as the fear of revealing "emotional info" about myself to others. My emotions feel so powerful that they seem dangerous, so I've learned to "turn them off" to avoid the exhausting situations that letting them flow would create. I also believe that letting others know how you feel about any given situation is handing them power, which can be weaponized against you. Give them nothing.
@TypeCast
@TypeCast Год назад
I think that's not uncommon for Fives. Most humans experience a full range of emotions, it's just that different Types deal with them differently. The Five deals with it (generally) by detaching. I can also relate to this as a One. I repress my carnal urges because if I let them out then the chaos would be unbearable.

It shows the differences in how different people interact socially. The lunch invitation was "implied", but someone like Turing would need an EXPLICIT invitation to pick up on it. Understanding the communication style of other people is key to making relationships work.

1.50 "One of the defence mechanisms 5s like to use is WITHDRAWAL. 5s are afraid of nothing as much as EMOTIONAL ENGAGEMENT. They shy away from feelings, sex, relationships that create DEPENDENCY". OMG, that's so true! Sometimes I meet someone on-line and have a great message exchange with them (NOT romantic, just discussing some random subject), but then if they contact me again, for some reason I just feel that MORAL BARRIER to even click on their message and reply back. Not always, but it happens. I am struggling with Chronic Fatigue, so guess it's part of that, but maybe I'm also afraid to create a situation where I get ATTACHED/DEPENDENT (even when it's Virtual and non-romantic), so I kinda keep my distance from the start. Even in cases when I over-share initially, I just step back and withdraw later. I guess I also don't want to get that person attached to me... I love your video on this and I look forward to watching more on the 5! One person I would like to add is Data from Star Trek TNG. I know Spock is the go to 5, yet as a 5w4 I feel connected more with Data. A logical and factual being that is fascinated by humanity and what it means to be human. I also relate to him because I find myself watching people and then when faced with situations I go through my files to pull up the correct response based upon what I have seen to imitate and appear “normal”. Instead of going into the math or science I went more towards the philosophy. It’s interesting that you pointed out that they have knowledge or expertise in multiple stuff as that is why I went into studying religion. There I have the opportunity to study philosophy, linguistics, religion, culture, some archeology, and more. I also like to shake up people’s beliefs, not so much in a mean spirited way but to push them. So often people settle when I see that they could be so much more. By providing them a little irritation it might give them incentive to push themselves and grow beyond the limits they have placed on themselves. I kind of consider myself a counselor or a guide to people. I love to gain knowledge and share it with others to help them along their own journey. I know that I have blind spots and weaknesses and by making others strong it will help balance out areas where I am weak at and vice versa. The more I learn the more I realize that an expert is such because they realize just how much they truly don’t know. It is a foolish person who thinks they know. That’s what drives me nuts about the 5s on screen when they are smarter than everyone else and lord it over them. To be a 5 is to be a life long learner. Not a know it all. I have to disagree though when you said that 5s aren’t competitive. I am very competitive but I use that to push myself or else I fall into procrastination. If I can pick someone to compete with, even if they don’t know it, then I can push myself to excel. I am curious what else you have discovered about 5s and as a woman what female 5s you have found represented in films and tv.

Thanks! I also have a Type Five Subtypes video you can check out. Two of the three characters in that video are female, which was on purpose. For this first Five video I had a really hard time finding good female Five characters, although viewers have commented with many good options that I'm exploring for future videos (although I haven't "confirmed" most of them)... - Temperance Brennan from "Bones" - Rory Gilmore from Gilmore Girls - Scully from X-Files - Lily from Sex Education I'm only vaguely familiar with Data but I'll check him out as a possible future character. Good character recommendations are always welcome (as you can see from above). I don't normally cross-promote, but my brother (a Five) and I (a One) do a podcast together called Agnostish, where we talk about our upbringing in Evangelical Christianity, reasons for and against faith, etc... What you've said about "pushing people" sounds a lot like him. Episode 2 will give you a good idea of what he's all about, if you're interested. We're actually recording the first new episode we've done in a while this Friday. www.agnostish.com/1109006/3958880-ep-02-andy-has-emotions-apparently Not every Type is a monolith, so that's great that you're competitive. Ooof. The part at 11:08 about being offended by others' peace of mind and wanting to ruin it is so unfortunately true. I'm no Hannibal Lectre, but if I'm in a bad state it aggravates me so much to see others going about their simple lives, spouting generic platitudes, and adhering to beliefs that don't stand up to a single round of questioning. It makes me angry, and I want them to see that everything they believe in is a lie. Having these thoughts is one of my early warning signs of immanent burnout/ break down.

Sometimes I beat myself up over being socially aloof - especially with the opposite sex - but today I walked around and realized some of these instances where I think I messed up I may not have and I would likely have little way of knowing either way. I'm always inside my head - so that actually gave me a sense of freedom, ironically. I've no idea what I'm doing socially...and never fully will. I can learn general maxims but each situation is so nuanced so rather than get overwhelmed - who cares. have fun and roll the dice

Great video, but I didn't want to miss anything, so I had to PAUSE it on every Quote, read it, then resume watching. For your next video - would you maybe consider adding a NARRATION/COMMENTARY (which doesn't overlap with the dialogue in the clips)? You could read quotes between clips or during clip parts with no dialogue. Just a suggestion 🙂 Thanks for the video! 😃🌿🌸 P.S. Sorry for commenting so much. I don't usually do that. 😅

Next I'm planning to do some "case study" videos, where I'll do a deep dive into one character for a whole video. Those will include me talking on-camera, plus the clips. There's definitely a trade-off having the quotes over the clips as they play. On the one hand you may have to pause and/or go back over it, but having the quotes separately also "disconnects" them and makes them (in my opinion) less impactful. For the next round I do I'll definitely be evaluating some options.

As a five, sometimes, as you may also possess certain quirks, it is difficult to over come them. Not because they bother us, necessarily, it is often because we have observed others, you, and discern that you have yet to give us a reason to behave in any other way; especially to fact of the matter, when you may adapt so flippantly for others you've observed long enough to see what it takes to get them to like you. How may they grow to like or even love you if you are not... you? I may be seen as an "asshole" in the moment because my unwillingness participate in conformity, for you, who don't know what they really want. But when my actions align with your goals I am told: "You are perceptive, reasonable, deep and more." I am seen as I care to be seen, what I allow to be seen. My emotions, passions, and desires are not for you or the public to know unless I've reasoned the gain from such exposure. For we know what it is shared is often assumed to be the total, yet if we are all reasonable, it is only the surface we care to share. Hi, I am this I am, a pénte (five), it's a pleasure to meet you. And what are you?
@TypeCast
@TypeCast 2 года назад
Nice to meet you! I'm a Type One. Someone I know (an Enneagram teacher actually) says, "You should be Authentic with everyone, Transparent with some, and Vulnerable with a few." So you might consider that, if you're going to have some semblance of connection/relationship with other people, there will be some level of "opening up" to others that you'll have to do. That doesn't mean that you have to tell everyone the full range of your emotions, passions, and desires, but some level of connection doesn't automatically mean that you're "participating in conformity." Just my two cents though.

Arrogance and condescension are not common attributes of 5s. This is a compilation of people who are cerebral, but 5s don't have that market cornered. To recognize the actual 5s, you need to remember that 5s are afraid they are inept. They compensate by attempting to become experts, not by pretending to be geniuses.
@TypeCast
@TypeCast 2 года назад
In my study/experience, something like "intellectual arrogance" is not uncommon for Fives to fall into when unhealthy. But as you say, not all Fives have the market cornered on intelligence. For the next round, I'm intentionally trying to use some clips that show unintelligent Fives, to make the point that not all Fives are automatically geniuses. That's also a great point that Fives can become "subject matter experts" to compensate for wanting to feel useful and informed.
@hannahlendman
@hannahlendman 2 года назад
This! From my experience at least, Fours are much more likely to express arrogance and pretend they are special or geniuses. This video alludes to it, but a lot of fives don’t feel the need for people to think they’re special. Even if they know they’re smarter than average, most fives would rather be left to their own devices with it and don’t need to show everyone how smart they are.

I find the insight at 11:09 to be particularly intriguing, because it digs into the deepest parts of where humans find meaning and peace, in their different ways. I have quite disliked most other Fives I have come across, _because_ they inhabit what _The Wisdom of the Enneagram_ calls the "low-average" space, and they have decided to be nihilistic and take pleasure in trying to undermine other people's beliefs. It's rather annoying. I say this as a Five who is Christian myself, and I only became a Christian because I did hundreds of hours of research into religions to figure out which one made the most sense, if any, and the Bible did. Because of what I believe beyond a reasonable doubt, I AM a Five who has extraordinary peace of mind and sense of meaning. It makes low-average nihilistic Fives without that sense of meaning seem... immature and petty.

I don’t know how it’s supposed to be like being a 5 But I’ll tell you what it’s like for me. Maybe yall can relate. I actually feel others view me as more stupid than I actually am. I don’t think I’m massively more intelligent than others I know I’m not stupid though. I don’t see myself as really intelligent or unusual in the sense either. Maybe that because I don’t really offer myself to any given conversation. Even my friend group,no one knows what I am actually really like. Don’t get me wrong I think I’m viewed as a pleasant presence, But no real character development there lmfao. She has nothing to give And the worse part is Even though I hate it I actively try to remain that way. As a blank slate. I’ll let little glimpses of 'me' Slip through But I try my best to just be as close to a normal nothing as possible as to not draw attention. I sort of stand there solitary And jump in with a few comedic statements here and there to build on Already high energy convos that were built up by other people. Im actually severely disappointed in myself. And despite what I’ve heard about the way I talk And my thoughts And what goes on in my head is intriguing to them Even when I’m told that by people. I start to withdraw from it again In fear And I’ll stop talking to you about those things . I actually start resenting myself for it. And thé whole perceptions thing. Is incredibly accurate to me.

@TypeCast 2 года назад
You might call it the “substructure“ of the Enneagram. There’s three Instinctual Variants (or Biases as some call it)… Social, Sexual, and Self-Preservation. Everybody has a dominant one, and it gives a sort of “flavor“ to your Type (called a Subtype). So a self-preservation five will look very different than a sexual five (and no, “sexual” isn’t what it sounds like). I’ve got a new subtype video for the Eight on my channel. Working on the other ones now. You can check those out to give you kind of a general sense of the Instinctual Biases. Check out “the Enneagram in a movie“ podcast, specifically the first three episodes of the first season, where they go into each Instinctual bias for a full episode. That should be enough to get you started. Keep in mind that they refer to the three instincts as Preserving, Navigating, and Transmitting. podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-enneagram-in-a-movie/id1547495077

A 5 is going to struggle more with getting in touch with the world around them, and acknowledging their own needs. Though this fits Spock, it isn't his primary motivator/struggle. However, 5 could absolutely be in his tritype.

This really was a wonderful video. Great info. A few others I would add are Miss Sloane (Netflix) and On the Basis of Sex, the story of RBG (Netflix). I think in Miss Sloane, I gravitated to how she used her energy and who she gave it to. How her thoughts would at times over shadow how someone might feel. I related to her character a lot and how her perspective was to always be the smartest in the room. HIGHLY recommend. And with On the Basis of Sex, I loved watching her character be so unimpressed that being a “woman” would have anything to do with her intelligence. The way she takes on double courses and continues to her “roles” in society without complaint feels related to 5s being very independent and reliant on self. I think these women show what it looks like when a 5 goes to 8 in health. They use that energy when needed and when it’s most important. I’m biased as a 5w4 female though ;). Love these videos and all of the ideas from it!

Thanks! I'll definitely check those out. Miss Sloane was already on my Round 2 list but someone had suggested it to me that she was and Eight. 8:15-30 "I don't like your stories.I think they are not good". I think it's NOT what a 5 would say. A 5 would point out in detail WHAT EXACTLY was the problem, as well as suggest WAYS TO IMPROVE. Otherwise this criticism would be pointless and even mean. 5s can be honest & direct, but they are NOT TACTLESS and oblivious to feelings of others. (At least not all 5s - I'm speaking from my own experience). As for her, in her place I'd ask what specifically was wrong, instead of getting angry & over-emotional just because he didn't praise her like everyone else did.

As a five, I have considered one thing to dissolve the need to dismiss another by explicitly repugnant terms such as - asshole. As encumbering encumberers encumbered by the cumbersome human condition, we are all on the very same level of smart and dumb, just in different places! Still, one could potentially see how some may be dumber than others if they forgo the importance of morality; a social governing for the preservation of sentient cohabitation.

@@iamthisiam No, I meant that in a negative way. If a toddler doesn't immediately get what they want, they throw a temper tantrum. Naranjo, the man who basically created the type structures we use today, even correlated E5 to Fi together with Ti and Si. He says that this type's insensitivity only exists in the context of a greater underlying hypersensitivity which is not expressed, since in reality this type doesn't fear emotions so much as emotional EXPRESSION, which would go against the nature of Avarice, but that correlates more to Fe than Fi, the latter of which is even described by the phrase "still water runs deep", which is very true of E5, especially the Sexual variant, characterized by greater sensitivity and need for connection/intimacy. Therefore INFP E5 isn't contradictory at all (although, as stated before, Sexual 5 is more likely than the other two subtypes).

@@TypeCast The tales we tell, of course as you know, are multifaceted machinations of wonder and human exploration. My take from the 'Queen's Gambit' is in fact one of her sexual escapades. Consider, the scene you presented, the parallels of sex and "games", chess no less, and the song they used; as the exchange of money continues. She ask for more, he eventually taps out and says no, realize then how he is being hustled for her pleasure. Appears to be a semblance of nymphomania. Yes, unfortunately, this idea does extend to the old man who teaches her "chess" in the dark basement where the elder women warned her away from. If your opinion differ, supply it here, and as I read, we both may be able to return to the movie and observe with a different lens. 😏 "Every evening, when all my day's work is through I call my baby, and ask him what shall we do I mention movies, but he don't seem to dig that And then he asks me, why don't I come to his flat And have some supper and let the evening pass by By playing records besides a groovy hi-fi... My baby loves me, she gets a feeling so fine And when she love me, she makes me know that she's mine And when she kisses, I feel the fire get hot She never misses, she gives it all that she's got And when she asks me if everything is okay I got my answer, the only thing I can say... We'll play a melody and TURNS THE LIGHTS DOWN LOW SO THAT NONE CAN SEE We gotta do that, we gotta do that We gotta do that, we gotta do that And there'll be no one else alive In all the world 'cept you and me Yeh, yeh, yeh, yeh, yeh" YEH YEH - The Blue Flames and Georgie Fame
