ENNERDALE WATER - A beautiful day at the most westerly lake in the Lake District, Cumbria, England

Due to the remote location of Ennerdale Water, this is one of the few lakes in the Lake District which is relatively quite even in the tourist peak season. In addition, both car parks that are on the shores of the lake offer a rare gift of free car parking! If walking the Wainwrights coast to coast, you will walk alongside this lake, view some of the challenges you will encounter.
We start at the Bleach Green car park which is to the east of Ennerdale Bridge village. From here we follow the outflow river for just a short distance to reach the shores of Ennerdale Water.
Initially, we are stood facing the weir that was built in 1903 to ensure a constant level of water in the lake. Then we head along the shore line towards Anglers Crag. Towards Anglers Crag there are two routes, the first mounts the very top of Anglers Crag whilst the route which is more often used hugs the shore line but involves a degree of scrabbling.
To aid the viewer in what might be the best route to take for their possible journey I review both paths and share the views and challenges from both. Initially, it is gaining the heights of Anglers Crag and then secondly we take on the challenge of the scrabble along the shore line. This info will be especially helpful if you are completing Wainwrights Coast to Coast.
The route on the shore line also passes Robin Hood's Chair, which we use to take in the full panoramic views of Ennerdale Water. Other famed people to visit Ennerdale Water include Hillary Clinton and Bill Clinton who were engaged to be married in this beautiful landscape.
Eventually, we get to the end of the lake and pass over the concrete bridge before taking the forest road which begins the return journey. On this part of the journey which is significantly easier underfoot, we note the placement of helpful picnic tables and other suitable places for picnics. In challenging weather this side of the lake offers 'good' in comparative terms, an alternative route for hikers walking Wainwrights Coast to Coast. Also, on this shore line about half way down we come across the alternative car park at Bowness Knott which also happens to offer free parking.
After the car park, we head away from the road to follow there footpath that completes the journey back to our original start point.

I walked along Ennerdale Water while walking the Coast to Coast and have always regretted not taking the high route over Red Pike , High Style and Haystacks, but watching your film has motivated me to plan a return visit. I might even throw in a wild camp. It`s the free parking that has convinced me to return.

Really enjoyed this video. I've never been to the lake district. Most of my hikes are in Wales and shropshire but after watching this I think I'll be visiting soon. Looks amazing. Many thanks for sharing 👍

Appreciate the comment Shaun, bit ironic as I don’t think I’ve explored Wales enough, so hoping to do the Pembrokeshire Costal Path soon. Thanks for watching.

The lakes you have walked recently are not ones I know, but your videos are feeding into future plans. Always looking for reasons to return to the Lakes.

Great tour of Ennerdale Water, thanks for showing me around this location! 👍🏻 I’m planning on heading up that way next week, for a few days exploring and tackling a few Wainwright’s along the way.. Not been up to the Lakes for many years, so I’m looking forward to it to say the least!..🏕✨

It’s a fantastic part of the lakes, relatively quite and some really challenging Wainwrights you can bag. Enjoy the expedition and thanks for watching and sharing your plans. Cheers

Ascending Angler's crag then going back to the fork in the path is worth a thumbs up in itself. Wonder if Clinton had a cigar after the proposal? Great video as ever Nigel. Atb Mark.

I used to stay at Ennerdale bridge and fish the lake (without success I might add) it's generally a lovely quiet place to be. Have you walked around Rydal water? I could quite easily live in the lake district, great video by the way.

Hi Keith, totally agree ‘a lovely quiet place to be’. Yes I’ve done the walk around Rydal Water and I always like to do Grassmere at the same time. If you review my channel page you will see there is a video of my walk. Also, there is a playlist titled Lakes of the Lake District which has all the Lake walks that I have done. Glad you enjoyed the video and I do appreciate the comment.

7:05 I reached this point but then I couldn't work out if the path continued downwards through the crevice on the left or up the crevice on the right. The path itself seemed to suggest the downward crevice but it looked too narrow for me to follow.

Totally understand, to some extent that's why I did this video and other Lakes so that visitors know what options, or not, are available. As I try to show in the video, the downward route is very much a scramble and as you say this is then followed by a narrow edge which of course is not suitable for everybody. The upward route, is more of a challenge coming down the opposite side as it's quite steep. So although various maps might show this route they don't really convey the nature of what the walker will have to overcome. I've done video's on many of the Lakes, so hopefully you might find one suitable or at least be forewarned. Happy to help if you have further questions/comments and best of luck with your next walk. Cheers, Nigel
