I gotta say, his control scheme seems whack. Not only is he twisting to roll (meh, but whatever) but he is pitching FORWARD his LEFT hand to pitch UP? Say whaaaa. Lol. Any jet / fighter would be right flight sticks: Forward pitch down Back pitch up Left roll left Right roll right. I don't know where he gets off binding pitch non inverted to his left hand...😂 I mean, he would probably kill me in a fight, but just cuz happy Gilmore sinks a hole in one with a hockey swing doesn't mean he should be teaching people how to swing a club. I'll listen for the tactics thought :). For me... Right: Forward pitch down Back pitch up Left roll left Right roll right Left stick on z extension Forward is forward Back is back Right is right Left is left Z axis is up and down, double bound with hats should I prefer to use them Yaw left is rudder left Yaw right is rudder right Toe break right doubles as strafe right Toe break left doubles as strafe left Another hat gives me up/down/left/right just in case I want to use my thumb to make small quick movements landing or jitter movements in combat. All seems pretty logical, but hey...wtfdik 🤐

This is a good video. Really got me thinking about the way I have my controls laid out. I feel like I have pretty solid control over my vert thrust with the toebrakes on my TFRP pedals. That, combined with left stick thruster control leaves me feeling pretty sharp. You make a great point about distributing the work that each input is doing, like not leaving too much to one hand.

It all makes sense now! I've been watching your videos while I gear up to run SC and your method of rolling to follow the target and then using pitch and up strafe makes a lot of sense. But on so many dual-stick videos I saw people putting strafe up as left stick twist, which seems dumb if that's going to be a main control you're using. I was thinking of having throttle as left stick twist but having it on pedals is brilliant...just like driving a car, as you said. Not sure I'll be able to spring for all this $$$ hw for a minute but now it all clicks for me, at least in concept. Thank you for your informative vids!

I use duet T16KMs, with the left stick thrusting fore / aft, strafe left / right and strafe up / down (twist), while the right stick has pitch, roll and yaw (twist). Due to tremors, I've keybinded many of the needed functions (landing gear, open/close doors, cycle missiles, PTT and many others, while the mouse and keyboard are used for "On Foot", "EVA", "Medpen", "F1", "F2", "F4" and others (sticks map available on request). ;-)

After a whooooole lot of trying out different setups, I finallly came back to this option. Although after my first practice in learning to fly my sticks a different setup felt natural to me. But as far as combat goes, this one feels much more natural to combat. Not that I really needed to watch this video to confirm this, but it 's interesting we both have the same conclusion about which combat setup feels most natural. Instead of pedals I use my omnithrottle stick like I do on a motorbike, but with my left instead of right hand.

Discovered your channel recently. Coming back to SC now after a long break. wanted to refresh my knowledge. After hearing the first 5 min of this tutorial i knew i struck gold! Finally someone who knows what he is talking about dogfights in SC. Big Thanks! I used to flight the Arrow with a M16.000 on left hand, pedals and a mouse on right hand. Had also throttel on the pedal. And yes, you can get a little more aiming precsion with the mouse, but its not worth the controls you are losing on the right hand. You get to overwhelmed on your left hand. You are right.

All the comments here seem to be focused on your control scheme and I'm over here thinking about using strafe to fine tune the pip on target. And I mean, it makes perfect sense now that I think about it. I think back to playing FPS games on a controller and I would do the exact same thing. Use the right stick to aim quickly and close to the enemy, and then strafe that last little bit to line up the shot. Strafing in a ship, much like in FPS, is a much slower control. Perfect for reducing the chance of over correcting. I've been a fairly competent combat pilot in SC for a long time (and an even better racer), but for whatever reason, I never thought to try this. I generally think of my strafing movements as being evasive and use my rotational controls to aim. Anyhow, thanks for the tips man. Can't wait to get home, give it a shot and see how it goes.

Since I only have one joystick with throttle (Thrustmaster X HOTAS), I use the hat on the joystick for the strafe movements. I guess it's not as precise as using two joysticks (it's just an on/off switch, not gradual), but it gets the job done. I've been watching your videos for hours. So a small technicality I believe. In Lykosaur's space combat video, he mentions that when you have analog control over strafe, you aren't actually setting your desired acceleration in a given direction, but rather your desired velocity. The flight computer will then devote 100% of it's available thrust in that direction until you reach that desired velocity, at which point it will stop accelerating. For example, if you hold your stick at 50% of the way to the right, your ship will then accelerate at 100% thrust you until reach 50% of your maximum velocity going to the right, at which point it will stop thrusting (0% thrust) in that direction and you'll stay drifting in that direction at 50% of your maximum velocity until you change your desired velocity.
@rolasmola9641
@rolasmola9641 2 года назад
This is why if you have your speed limiter and thrust limiter set to max, your movements can still be a little jerky when trying to land as you'll still be getting 100% thrust in small bursts as you adjust what your desired velocity is.

Well, I feel good that your video just gave me conformation that my idea was good. I had come up with the same idea of using my pedals and stick axies with the exception that I plan to reverse the strafe up down. Im an old helicopter guy. Left hand feels natural for the pull back on that stick to be up :) Thanks for the video!

Nice set-up - it takes a while to find what works. I use the CH joystick and throttle, with Saitek combat rudder pedals, (I use the pedals to roll, and then the right stick the same as yours). The CH throttle also has a nice analogue thumb joystick, that I set as the strafe thrusters, like your left stick but you also get use of the throttle which I find easier to have at a set power without having to hold it there. For me, the main issue with 2 sticks was the throttle - sweet you used pedals (could driving pedals work as well, they would probably transition from full power to full reverse quicker).

Just getting back into SC after a couple years hiatus... Watching a lot of these kinds of videos to get me on the right track. Good STUFF! Didn't go straight for Virpil gear but settled on dual TH T16000m and throttle and rudder. I got rid of that rudder ASAP. Didn't like the feel of it at all. The sticks and throttle are acceptable. And will be marginally better after some mods and better grease. For thrust I chose the TH T3PM racing pedals. They feel sturdy and have magnetic sensors. All i need now is an extra set of springs to get the right feel for those pedals. So with thrust on pedals i also have strafe on left stick, although for me it feels more natural to pull back to strafe up and push forward to strafe down. For now I have roll on Z axis right stick but might switch that to left stick as well.

I've always felt the right joystick should basically be aiming your reticle on a 2d plane, with up/down, left/right as starfighters are able to maneuver via yaw plan exponentially better than an aircraft. Dual sticks are awesome. I have X52 for the right hand, TM16K for the left hand (vertical and lateral movement). G29 steering wheel pedals and the combined axis via Joystick Gremlin, vjoy & HidHide as I have two Cougar MFD panels for extra buttons, along with the keyboard of course. I roll by pushing the right stick left and right, yaw is on the twist. It works for me as it's habit. I could change it up with practice of course but it doesn't feel as immediately natural. Left stick is great for vertical and lateral movement & yeah the precision is off the charts. With any control set up you have to make it feel as natural as possible to you and practice it. Tweak the sensitivity & dead zone for extra comfort. You could add extra sensitivity at the more extreme ranges however those are extremely rare occurrences in dire situations. No one can understand the flexibility of the HOSAS set up without being able to experience it for themselves, it's truly a game changer.

I know you have a combat basics playlist, but I would be interested in a hardware/binding/curves playlist too in terms of what you use. It never once occurred to me to use pedals for throttle, and it actually makes a lot of sense. My right hand is handling roll on the twist axis with yaw and pitch as well, and then my twist axis on my left does up/down thrust which puts a lot of work into my right hand for targeting and my left twist is not exactly intuitive. It will take a long time to unlearn roll in my right hand, but I might try it. I do really like using left y axis for up and down thrust, at least notionally, but to try that would require buying pedals or find another home for throttle. I mean I already unlearned right hand x-axis roll, so what is one more thing lol. I do think my setup may be better for decoupled debatably, but I never fly decoupled anyway.

I use my left stick for all strafing and absolute throttle, with twist for up/down strafe. I put pitch/yaw/roll all on the right stick, with yaw on the twist. The reason I do it that way is because regardless of the attitude change, my right stick is always physically moving the same way my actual ship is. The ship simply follows the stick no matter what I do. I mean a twist is literally a yaw deflection, and moving the stick left or right is also a physical roll of the stick. How I think about vertical strafing on the left stick is kind of like a screw, which already associates a rotation action with a vertical displacement. For people without foot pedals. Edit: my overall keybinds philosophy is to keep related systems as clustered together as possible, so there's a feel of having sections dedicated to specific ship systems. So with that in mind I definitely wouldn't separate yaw from pitch and roll, as they are all attitude changes. Likewise throttle and strafing are all types of translation motion, so they share a common controller.
@graphite7473
@graphite7473 2 года назад
I also put speed limiter on the left throttle slider, and the less-used engine throttle on the right slider. The right slider changes to control mining intensity or scanning mode width in those modes. This frees up my mouse wheel to basically always be zoom.

I am curious to create a new remap in reWASD using the up/down straffe on left stick and pitch/yaw on right stick, then roll on two upper paddles and thrust forward/back on lower paddles. Dedicate that whole profile just to flight as if the sticks were hosas. It's alien to me because I'm school and so used to hotas and twist being yaw and x axis being roll on stick. I'm a basic layout guy, so don't mind me, but the left stick strafe makes sense, unless you are tracking in an asteroid field. It sounds easier to get tunnel vision try to strafe to meet the target and accidentally hit a meteoroid. But absolutely, that is a fine tuning to meet the pip. Rotate and raise. Easy. But could also be done if you adjust the sensitivity curve of the sticks, no? As in low stick input, low speed movement, full stick, full movement. Or was it that the buttons adding too much of a control problem for just one hand, while your other was idle?

Whenever somebody start off their ttech talk with "this works for me, it might not work for you but I recommend giving it a try" you know they are A) self-confident about what they're presenting and B) not selling something (i.e. demanding you stroke their ego by doing exactly what they do); and it adds so much to weight of their delivery. AV1 is clearly a master of what he's presenting, you don't even have to watch his myriad of videos as evidence of his skills. also, when he likened his flight controls to a first-person shooter, I nearly sprained by neck nodding so hard. 🤣 Anyone use a stick + mouse setup? Never tried it myself, but it seems like a winning option as well.

Very interesting stuff. However I wonder how exactly you have it all mounted? Just to a desk? An aluprofile rig? A special chair? How. And what monitor..

Interesting setup. Obviously it works for you. I use a Warthog HOTAS with TPR pedals with roll and pitch on the stick, forward and back on the throttle, yaw on the rudders, strafe left and right on the toe pedals and brute force strafe up and down on the top hat on the throttle, with FINE strafe up and down on the throttle mini-mouse axis on the throttle. I think we have similar mentalities on what is important, but different hardware to get there. You're just better at it lol

I'm using warthog too, i got roll and strafe on rudders, yaw on stick (the mindfuck lol) Upstrafe is on the left throttle handle, but i find it really difficult to get used to manipulating both throttles independent so most of the time i find myself just using throttle thumbstick for upstrafing which sukks :D i feel like our setup is not made for this XD I really like the right throttle ministick for strafe tho, i might steal that lol
@jwpipes47
@jwpipes47 2 года назад
How do you do FINE strafe? Just bind the UP/DOWN STRAFE to the Y axis on the throttle mouse? I'm curious to try this. Do you really do full BACK/FORWARD on the throttle? I hate having both so much. I always set it to forward only and use a back strafe binding on the thumb hat. Do you find using back that much? Part of the problem I have is I mainly fly big ships so this fine control is irrelevant for what I do mostly as those ships can't perform that way. But I want to get into fighters and PVP.
@THEQuantumBacon
@THEQuantumBacon 2 года назад
@@jwpipes47 Yes. I use back that much, and it seems intuitive to me to have a neutral band set (deadzone) with anything forward of that moving me forward and anything aft of that moving me backward. My strafe is bound to a mini-stick I replaced the minimouse with. It is a great addon by DeltaSim. It allows full analogue control (though I aggressively set the curves because it's a ministick).

Personally, my forward/backward is on the twist of my left joystick, while my roll is on the twist of my right joystick. I don't have rudder pedals at the moment, else I would probably put then both on it.

I feel like a thumb stick on top of the right stick to control side to side and up down strafing with forward back and roll on the left stick would be ideal

Try it out and write some feedback here! One of the key factors I'd like to hear in your feedback would be how you manage the load of simultaneous actions a hand has to make vs splitting to the other hand.

I was totally surprised to hear you say your roll was left hand twist.. controller player here, so I can’t really talk, but what I have works for me.. at least I can feel good knowing that we both have pitch/yaw on the right stick, plenty of people tell me to have roll/pitch instead like an airplane

Damn I have a t1600m FCs Hotas . I'm thinking I can use the mini Joystick on the throttle to be by strafing control. Actually saying that in the PTU they have a bunch of new bindings for a lot more sticks and combinations (even the virpils, I think) and I think the FCS Profile has this already. I also have another 1600m which has a broken twist - so that can be a backup if I can't work out the throttle mini-joystick

Lol, came to almost identical scheme. :D The only difference is I use left twist for yaw and left-right on right stick for roll. This was because I used it in Elite Dangerous where the roll + pitch was the fastest way to turn. Other than that, the same controls. :) Even the car-based front - back scheme on pedals. :DDDDD This made me genuinely laugh.

If star citizen simulated the lateral G effects (like the game do it positive and negative G) players wouldn't use yall to turn the ship anymore, they would start to fly the ship like a airplane, because irl, positive G is always the safest one for the pilot. But for now, players will still take advantage of this problem to do those high Gs lateral turns
@Gortosan
@Gortosan Год назад
Well I'm glad it doesn't because then it would become the next generic flying game. Star Citizen is something new when it comes to the way you fly and we should appreciate it
@Joshua-by4dc
@Joshua-by4dc Год назад
@@Gortosan it's generic right now, high G lateral turns is the most generic thing in this game because it destroys the immersion. Let's be honest here, star citizen is that way just for mouse players to have advantage against flight stick players, to sell more copies becouse mouse players are majority, it would be more hard for mouse players to fight having to roll the spaceship.
@Gortosan
@Gortosan Год назад
@@Joshua-by4dc Make it fairer for everybody by slightly/moderately increasing the black/redout effect for lateral Gs. Make it less effective but don't take it out of the equation completely would be my suggestion. I see where you're coming from but making it less attractive for mouse players would be the dumbest move from the devs. This game tries to be an mmorpg whilst clearly being part of a very niche genre. I don't want Star Citizen to come to a point where it doesn't know what it wants to be. We've seen what happens when we look at Tarkov
@Joshua-by4dc
@Joshua-by4dc Год назад
@@Gortosan but it's not fair for everyone, mouse players have advantage, becouse mouse is more precise, it would be more fair if mouse players had to roll the aircraft to make turns, it's more realistic, it's more visual interesting, it's more fair and it's make more sense, since the game already simulate positive and negative Gs.

No room for pedals, sadly, so I need to use twin sticks for all six degrees of freedom. Right stick is pitch, yaw, roll, left is all the strafes.

@Avenger__One: Do you think it's a big deal to reverse the left hand? To me it seems more natural that way and kinda like the right hand. Pulling the right hand raises the aiming reticule, but pulling the left hand lowers it?

I have been wanting pedals for a while now. I have thought about using them for thrust for years. Grrr. I currently use dual stocks but i have Pitch, Yaw, and Roll on the twist of right stick and then strafe on X, Thrust forward and reverse on Y, and Up down on the Twist of the left stick. Using the twist for the Up down is a bit more difficult than using up down on the stick i think may be. Because the sticks X axis is so much more different feeling than my up down Twist axis i think my brain just cant get that perfect balance for making those fine strafe adjustments to keeping the reticle on target. It just feels slightly unbalanced. Its going to take some getting used to though if i get the pedals because i have been doing it this way for so many years now. Should be an interesting experience.

You said that when you push down on your left stick, you strafe UP and when you pull back you strafe DOWN right? To me that seems counter intuative what the ship needs to do. Push DOWN for strafe down ie. down= go down and pull up=strafe up?? guess we all have our preferences.
