Welcome to the world of Epica. It's a Dutch symphonic metal band founded in 2003 by Mark Jansen. The lead singer is Simone Simons and this 10th Anniversary show lasted for almost 3 hours and she had to keep up those high notes the whole show and she pulled it off while also beeing pregnant for a couple of months. A lot of their songs have growlings by founder and guitar player Mark Jansen. Not everyone likes growling but then again in Epica this has a purpose. Lyrically it's often the opposite of Simone's part. It has become a trade mark of this band her soothing voice and lyrics and Mark's harsh vocals. This all combined with orchestra and choir on all their releases. I would say listen to Unleashed next from this same show. From the more heavy stuff to soaring ballads and everything in between it's all there in Epica's huge catalog.👍
Thanks for your comment and suggestion. I believe Bruce (the channel owner) will do more with Epica in future episodes. I will make him aware of your suggestion. Thanks!
Copy/paste my comment from the other reaction - Epica is an amazing band. Mind-blowing fusion of metal and classic elements, creativity and lyrics. However IMO this song is not even in their top 50... I strongly recommend you to pick one of these (better more) from the same concert (Retrospect 10th anniversary) - Epica - Unleashed Epica - Design Your Universe Epica - The Phantom Agony Epica - Serenade of Self-Destruction Epica - Chasing the Dragon Epica - Sensorium
Check out "Chasing the Dragon", the "Instrumental Medley+The Divine Conspiracy" or "The Phantom Agony" on the same Retrospect show, I bet you will love all of them!
That was fun to watch (all 3 reactions). I agree with whoever said that wasn’t the best song to start with but I would imagine it was picked because of the intro with the symphony. The entire 3 hour concert was absolutely amazing. Usually when these types of band perform their normal concerts the symphonic components are tracked, since this was a special anniversary event they went for all live obviously. Within Temptation, another Dutch symphonic metal band, also has a full concert with a symphony which is also pretty spectacular. I hope you all listen to some more. Epica has a ton of great songs that really show off their versatility.
I can't even tell you how much Monopoly on Truth has impressed me the first time I heard it. For the first time, my mind was blown by music and the lyrics are superb! I personally think it's a perfect or at least nearly perfect song. Wouldn't change much about it.
This is symphonic goth with death metal influences. No power metal to be found. These are typical vocals for the genre. IMO, symphonic metal is the only genre to listen to these days; I think it carries the exploring spirit of Yes/King Crimson/Rush to the next level
It's symphonic metal. No reason to complicate the classification since they fit neatly within that established box. And there's definitely traces of both prog and power metal in that type of soind.
Sounds like "rhapsodic metal"might be a better name for the genre? Epica is generally a prototypical symphonic gothic metal band, with strong death metal influence, and a bunch of mix-ins you mentioned. For the power metail-based strain of the genre you may want to check out Nightwish, although with age they all seem to coalesce around a more progressive-influenced direction
Epica is amazing, but there are more great Dutch metalbands. You should definitly check out "Dear Mother" With their debut album "Bulletproof". They are a new dutch metalband formed by ex-Delain guitarist Merel Bechtold and ex-Delain drummer Joey de Boer. They teamed up with David "Pear" Hruska as their vocalist. Its realy worthwhile! I recently found them and bought the album right away, they're incredible! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gUCW2caH0nk.html
Many prog rock, prog metal and heavy metal bands start their live concerts with a piece of classical music. Hardrock fans just love a piece of great heavy music and that includes classical music.
Epica is just being epica. This song might be older than all the things you are comparasing it to. Check out their new video the skeleton key. Its awsome.
nice man, next u can react dimmu borgir, their bring full orchestra too on the stage.. but dont forget too react nightwish first for bring more view on your channel.. keep up!!
one of the greatest symphonic metal bands, ever..."kingdom of heaven will shatter all your illusions" and "canvass of life" will reconstruct them with vivid clarity
Please react to Epica - Stabat Mater Dolorosa (live Retrospect Show). And please react to Tarja Turunen. She is a soprano. (The Phantom Of The Opera - live End of an Era )

So three seperate reaction videos to one song? 🤔 Like the three different reactions, but it takes time to watch all three... Now you expect three reactions from me huh? 😉 1. Epica does game scores too... and Star Wars 2. See 001B 3. See 001C
@@SymMusicReact Understand that completely Stephen (three different locations and moments in time) I'll try to keep up reacting in three different comments as long as possible too. Loved it!
@@SymMusicReact Ha! Fooled me there! Oh, got it now... now the references by Stephen to 'Bruce' make sense. Allright, thanks for getting Stephen, Aaron and MK, to react to Epica 🤘
