Backing track is made real orchestara : London Philharmonic Orchestra, conductor James Shearman and orchestral arragments mostly by Pip Williams. Song is composed NW keybordplayer Tuomas Holopainen. He tell to Pip Williams what he want to hear and Pip arragment the instruments to fit Tuomas wishes.
@oldascii
@oldascii 4 года назад
Just for clarity. Tuomas does orchestrate the songs using sampled strings for the demo. He prints that out for timing, key and chord structure over basic parts. He may add incidentals, ornaments, dynamics and other notations. Sends the score, parts, demo and midi to London where the conductor and arranger go over it and then Pip will start arranging according to Tuomas' vision. Writing string parts is a very difficult and specialized skill especially if you don't do it every day. Tuomas will fly to London for rehearsal and work with Shearman & Williams to adjust, tighten up or edit any portion of the song prior to recording sessions. In some songs strings are sampled and played by Tuomas but not on Ghost Love Score.

If you are going to call yourself a musicologist, you should be able to tell the difference between synthesizer's samples and a real orchestra and choir. They record all the symphonic parts with the London Philharmonic full orchestra and choir, all the instrumental part are recorded separately on hundreds of tracks, so they do not have to downmix and Tuomas can re-arrange them for live performances. And you talked during the entire vocal belt at the end, WTH.

[003A] Hello @ Stephen from SymMusicReact ! Nightwish fans here, your reaction just appeared on our radar.. Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band, performing in 2013 at Wacken Open Air festival, in front of a 82k+ audience. About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they didn't used a synth as you said, instead they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners. I really appreciated your professional approach, and I'm really sorry you were so much "in your head" at the end to notice the climax - THAT explain the down-votes you received from the fans.. Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory): " Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland. Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. Marco Hietala is the Bassist and vocals .And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen . Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition. Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her. There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps. I want to welcome you to the Nightwish community. I hope you like them enough to continue the journey. Believe me Nightwish will surprise you with their songs. You will never know what to expect. They are unbelievable live. I want to warn you that Nightwish fans are hard core. Welcome into the world of storytelling by Nightwish. It’s a score about Ghost Love. You’re wrong bro, these strings are real but Okee, they’re not live. All the symphonic music you hear (on almost every song of Nightwish is written by Tuomas (keyboards) but is performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Since there’s not enough space on stage for a full live orchestra (and also couldn’t go with them on world tour for more than a year) it’s a pre-recorded running soundtrack at Angel Studios, London. This orchestra is featuring on every album NW released since ‘Once’ (except the last one Human :|: Nature which is performed by Blue Dot Orchestra)

Nightwish uses a backing track for the orchestra instruments and adds some synthesized stuff on top. Tuomas the keyboardist and main composer writes lyrics in a very poetic way. He uses lots of imagery and metaphors to express his ideas. I think this was the London Philharmonic doing the backing track. They are doing 3/4 to give it a waltz or folk feel. Can you call this song a type of Tone Poem? Tuomas loves movie scores and one of his favorites is Hans Zimmer among many others. I think this song is about longing for a lost love, who has died. The one who is still alive is wanting to be re-united in death with their lost love.

I think you will be interested in Ayreon. Everything is composed by Arjen Anthony Lucassen. He then invites many very well known metal musicians to (play and) sing their parts. Floor Jansen and Marko Hietala from Nightwish and Simone Simons and Mark Janssen from Epica also participated. Every album is a concept album. Musically the music is metal opera, symphonic metal, progressive metal. Most songs have two or more singers often in complex harmonies. Look on RU-vid for songs of one of their live concerts: Ayreon Universe live The electric castle live and other tales.

As others have said, this is an actual orchestra and choir. The keyboard player writes 95% of the music. He then works with an arranger to score the orchestral/choir parts. The band has to play to a click track to match their performance with the recorded track. Don't worry about those in the Army that start complaining on when you speak. They've heard the song 100 times before, but it was new to you. Well done.

Nice reaction! This genre of music is known as Symphonic Metal. GLS is the most reacted to song, in the history of music reaction videos, with 900+. A good deal ahead of Jinjer-Pisces, that is second. Several reactors have gotten over a million views on their GLS reaction. With the highest having 2.4 mil! Helping to make Nightwish the most reacted to artist or band in the history of music reactions videos. With close to 6,000. See "Masterlist Nightwish Reactions". The have more then 125 songs on 9 studio albums, in their discography. FYI:There were 82,000+ in the audience at this performance. It is the 13th of 15 songs that NW performed that night. I would recommend either 'Ever Dream' or 'Storytime' from the same concert for your next Nightwish reaction. The singer's name is Floor Jansen. She is the 3rd and still current female lead singer of Nightwish (est. 1996) She had been with the band for little over 10 months at the time of this concert on 03 August 2013, when she was 32. She started performing in the first Metal Band she was in, After-Forever, at the age of 16. After that band disbanded, she started her own band called Revamp. Which was on hiatus, when she received a call from Nightwish to take over the female lead singing duties mid-tour. The rest is herstory.

And content of lyrics has nothing to do with music period or music style. You say you hear the seventies and eighties in there somewhere. The music is actually a combination of live synths and pre-recorded backing tracks. The choral and orchestral backing tracks were, however, recorded by an actual orchestra and choir, and are not synth samples. Certainly, they could have probably brought an actual orchestra and choir with them, but the logistics of doing that for just a one-off 1-2 hour show, with limited stage space and literally no orchestra pit, made bringing pre-recorded backing tracks much more doable.

Hey guys. Ok, he talked about the last note - but in fact, this is a reaction of an unknown song (at least for him). So be patient. And at least, it is a reaction and not (like others): 1) watching, 2) saying "this is nice", 3) saying "don't forget to subscribe", 4) "until next time. Bye". This isn't that bad for so many dislikes...

Some constructive criticism: Imagine you're giving a live performance and people are talking over it, critiquing what you're doing. Even if their comments are positive, it's annoying to you and the rest of the audience. This is one level removed from that scenario, for though we're not annoying the musicians, we're annoying the online audience. However we have the luxury of stopping the video and making our comments. We also have the luxury of being able to back up the video to make a second pass, both to ensure a smooth flow and to emphasize a point we're making. When there's a point to be made, wait for a transition in the music or other natural stopping point, pause it and make the comment. Then back up a bit so the audience can reconnect with the flow of the music. Never stop or talk over the money note. Another thing, and you're not the only professional to fall into this, don't make a firm determination based on a limited dataset. It usually produces an egg-on-face result. Your comment about the synth producing the strings was off base as the band, for the most part, uses a backing track produced by the London Philharmonic and associated choirs. Lastly, ditch the ear buds and get studio monitor headphones. Professional commentary using amateur equipment produces an amateur result. It's like shooting commercial photography with an iPhone.

Everyone needs to chill. He doesn´t know what is coming next and what everyone´s waiting for and it´s meant to be his genuine first reaction. If it reminds him of movies and that distracts him a little, whatever that doesn´t mean he won´t listen again, appreciate it and all that. The choir and orchestra thing fine he said he thought it was or seemed like it, didn't say it for sure was a synthesizer and everyone can make mistakes especially if it´s the first time listening to something while filming yourself and giving your opinion out loud to a camera so breaaaathe. Sure, let him know it´s not but no need to imply anything about him or his profession or anything, that is disproportionate for a 15 minute about a first impression. Like I love Nightwish same as all of you but man... he didn´t even say anything bad about them. In fact, if it is mere defensiveness about people criticizing something you like (which he didn´t) he really liked Epica and said he like Nightwish way more so chill. Yeah maybe elaborate more at the end and not over the song but it can be said as a piece of nice advice.

So, I guess the real problem with this reaction is that the reactor truly believes that he has a vast musical knowledge (or is it music knowledge? please, someone correct me) and not only he has not, but he doesn't have the courage to say what he really thinks about the song and what he knows about music. Is like when someone watches a movie that is considered one of the greatest movies of all time and doesn't understand it but goes to tell the world about how much knowledge about films and cinema has and talks nonsense about the movie and about the meaning of the movie and stuff like that. This is the same. He keeps talking about the synths and that everything is made with synths and that he can tell and not only is not true but it shows how little he knows about concerts or live performances. He really doesn't know what a sample is. And like many said on the comments, he didn't care about the song. I'm sure he didn't even like it. Everyone likes to stay in a confort zone, so that's why when someone listen to something new try to find some other thing to compare with something else. Maybe once or twice. He did this the entire video. And keep talking about movies or groups and it isn't even THAT new! NightWish and almost every symphonic metal band are the natural evolutions of bands like Deep Purple or Rush or Queen, that used to played these really long compositions even with orchestras. And some of that bands did it in the 60s! But at one moment he reveals the truth. He talks about the radio and the billboard and that's his confort zone. So he's a musicologist of mainstream music, and that's OK. Just don't try to sell your BS to other people. He didn't liked the song. He talks a lot and compares the music with a lot of things that can't be compare to and he does that in a way to tell everyone that all that "old music" he knows, is better. He just doesn't have the courage to say that he didn't liked it. NightWish is from the mid 90s. Is not that far from that many songs, artists, bands and movies that he named. This song is almost 16 years old. I'm sure that if he reacts to the NW version of The Phantom of the Opera he would say something like "I can tell that he is not really a phantom... this remainds me to a movie with Gerard Butler and Emily Rossum... they made a musical too and I think someone wrote a book"

G'day, Stephen. Hope you're well. Firstly, thanks for your "first listen" point of view. You made some interesting observations. For not being a professional reactor, I think you did well. Just fyi, the orchestra and choir are recorded, not synthesized. As you may have figured out by now, we, the Nightwish Army, tend to be very protective of them. Some, dare I say, overly so. ;) 'Nuff said 'bout that. Now, I stayed to the end where you expressed your liking of this performance, and I agree that with further uninterrupted listening, your appreciation of this whole "Nightwish" phenomenon will be enhanced. Just one thing, if I may, mate; try not to compare Nightwish to anyone or anything else. Allow yourself to be carried away by the mood(s) of each song and lyric, because you're right in thinking that the lyrical content in Nightwish songs is important. My suggestion would be, if you're not planning to "react" to any other song from this amazing concert, to just enjoy it in its entirety. All I would ask is that you play it either through a nice sound system at a "reasonable" volume (not too quietly :) or through good quality headphones. So stay healthy, mate, and cheers from the land of Aus ;) \m/

Great reaction. Don’t take the thumbs down too much to heart. NW fans are fanatical (word play intended) and wait with bait3d great for Floors last note which often leaves reactors with their mouths hanging open. I think there was a bit of an anticlimactic reaction because you had been offering comments through the last note. But, how would you know... you have never heard this song before. 😎. Nightwish records it’s music with the London Symphony Orchestra and it is played using click tracks with the rest of the band. I’m thinking that maybe because the music was recorded that compression may have made it seem synthesized. Hard to tell because Tuomas does play a lot of parts with his keys. I really enjoyed your reaction. I hope you will react to more Nightwish. They are an amazing band with many different sounds, textures and flavors. One thing Nightwish is not is boring. Side note, with the exception of the new album, Nightwish is very much a live band. To me, their studio work is more orchestral while their live performance are really spectacular.

Talking over everything is just crass - not sure of your setup there, but take note of Aarons reaction on how it should be done. @ronaldboers8061
@ronaldboers8061 4 года назад
The music is called symphonic metal and is very populair in Europe and South America. The band is from Finland and founded in 1996. So far the band has had 3 vocalists 1 Tarja Turunen (Finish) pure opera voice also very good live. (until 2005) 2 Anette Olzon (Schwedish) more pop style. fine in the studio but not good live. (until 2012) 3 Floor Jansen* (Dutch) (current). * She is the vocalist you saw in this clip. She has a classical vocal background education and can sing any style she likes from jazz to opera high to growling low. Believe me when i tell you you have not even scratched the surface yet of what she's capable of. Band members Tuomas Holopainen (The keyboard player and creative mind behind the band. He writes about 95% of the music and lyrics) Marco Hietela (the viking with the long beard (Bass and vocals) Jukka "Julius" Nevalainen Later (2015) replaced by Kai Hahto because of health issues (The drummer) Erno "Emppu" Vuorinen (the hobbit like guitar player) Troy Donockley ( a person who did not play on this song but is a multi instrumentalist from the UK) The clip was shot a few months after Floor jointed the band right in the middle of their US leg of the world tour. They asked her to join after tensions between the previous (Anette) vocalist and the rest of the band had rissen so high that they fired her. With close to a year still to go to complete the tour, and their next concert planned 2 day later they, needed a replacement fast. They called Floor because she had toured with them when she was part of the support bands"After Forever" and later "Revamp" on several occasions and they were quiet impressed by her vocals (who would not be?). She only had 2 days, including a flight from the Netherlands to the US, to learn the setlist and only had one rehearsal with the band a couple of hours before her first show and nailed it. Since they were making a documentary about the world-tour a lot of what happened was recorded. The documentary is called "Please learn the setlist in 48 hours" (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vhExkmWKMEU.html ) As a next song to take a look at i would recommend their masterpiece "The poet and the pendulum" live at Wembley. Before you take a look at it i would recommend to take a look at the backstory of this song. This will make you appreciate it much more. here is the link ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gbn9GczYBkw.html BTW that last note she just sang? Nightwish fans created a whole new word for when she does something impressive like that. We call it a Floorgasm. Welcome to the club and boy are you going to receive a lot of traffic on your channel. ;-)

I'm a big Nightwish and Floor fan but I have to say I agree with you on some of the comments about the lyrics. They have some good ones: one of my favorites is in "Romanticide" -- the line "See ... me ruined .. by ... my ... own ... creations". But on the other hand, in an otherwise excellent song that was brilliantly merged in with the child movie adaption of Peter Pan -- "Storytime" -- (see at "ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OIqk4sOaajQ.html" for the RU-vid video), the lyrics seem a little off in telling the story. This is where I would love to see someone like Taylor Swift handle the lyrics and Tuomas handle the instruments For example the line "I am the story that will read you real" or "caress the tales and they will dream you real" sounds kind of awkward. (On the other hand their line "Imaginarium -- A Dream Emporium!" is one of my favorite lines). Remember that, with the exception of Floor, their native language is Finnish, not English, and maybe this has something to do with it. On The Cult, I remember them and always liked their material. Remember though that they had a male singer, and I'm not sure how really accurate it is to compare a band for which the female vocals comprise so much of the emphasis with a band with a male voice. Overall I enjoyed the reaction though. Thanks!
