Would love it if you guys would start listing the bullet O.A. length & seating depth, for case inclusion. Also required velocity for proper expansion without having to email to ask all the time. That information should already be on a reloading component in my opinion. Love your products and by far I use more Hornady than anything.

Been using copper and copper alloy for 30 years to include 7 African animals. They go in the size of the caliber and exit twice the size. They go through shoulders and still exit the other side. The hydro dynamic shock, in between, is devastating and you have two holes pouring blood. You also, don't have flakes of lead or jacket in the meat. I will give the CX a try! Still waiting for the 223, 55gr sp's, to be in stock, for prairie doggin this summer.😜

If you think getting components in the US is tricky try living in Alberta where a local gunshop ordered 2000 pounds of powder and got 80. My lucky number is 7, so I bought a pound of IMR7977, which will last me a lifetime. My goal for 50CX bullets with 7977 is 50 moose, elk or caribou. As far as minor diameter bore or land wear from solid copper projectiles especially one without alloys, where do we stand right now with physical documentation testing data? I know it’s going to vary dramatically depending on bare stainless barrel vs. a melonited barrel with such a hard surface treatment. Having a “relief” cut or cannalure surely helps with material displacement, but what about the other projectiles? LOVE the discussions you guys put together and LOVE THE PODCAST! Keep it up 👍

Hi Team Hornady :) Love the format - only became aware of it due to the very popular episodes recently and heard some very interesting details about non-lead bullets. I think it was Miles who said that non-lead bullets appear to have a harder time compensating for irregularities in the barrel. A few months back I was working on a lead-free load for a 6.5Creedmoor in a Bergara B14 HMR and wasted nearly 500€ on components trying half a dozen bullets from different manufacturers (including the CX and ECX) with useless results for every single one of them. Went through three different powders, cleaned the barrel thoroughly and tried every trick in the book - would hardly hold a 2MOA group with 5 shots. Was shooting jacketed lead bullets before and after with really good results and went back to lead core bullets since. Shooting a tipped hunting bullet now that basically gave me „sub MOA“ performance from the start. Can you elaborate a little on what effects could have messed with lead-free bullets? This was a very expensive lesson for me other shooters & reloaders can hopefully skip! Btw: shooting lead-free bullets in several other rifles with great success!

What we need is the Interbond bullet back and loaded in the common flavors of rifle ammunition and with the upgraded heat tip on them. The sst bullets are accurate but explosive on game and often wound large game and don't get full penetration.

I would like to know when you guys will make a monolithic bullet that will compete with the barnes LRX bullet that offers long range expansion down to 1600fps vs the new CX still needing the traditional 2000fps for expansion? Is this something you guys will work on in the future?
@phild9813
@phild9813 Год назад
It seems like the CX should compete fairly well with the LRX. In my experience, the LRX probably ought to have at least 1900 minimum to get enough expansion, not 1600. TTSXs probably 2000. It’s certainly subjective since only you can decide how much expansion is satisfactory for what you’re doing, but I wouldn’t rely on Barnes’ subjectivity.

I have converted over to both CX and ECX bullets and they are working well but I find it very hard to find load data. There doesn't appear to be any for ECX and I'm told to use GMX data for CX. But if the CX bullet is a step forward over the GMX I would expect the load data to have changed as the difference sounds like more than when, in the past, I have compared other other very similar bullets to each other and in that satiation I have seen significant differences in load data and the most effective powders.

You will have to research that for your caliber. As an example I shoot a .270 win and the available factory Ammo with the CX bullets only come in 130 grain not 150. This is because the twist rate to stabilize a bullet depends on the length of the bullet not the weight. Copper alloy being lighter it will be a longer bullet compared to the same weight lead core round.

I noticed on my older Hornady ammo with a red tip that the “polymer” tip has shrunk considerably. Will this noticeable shrinkage affect the performance of the ammo to the point where I should trash the ammo? No pun intended. I buy your Duty ammo for four different pistol calibers usually the plus P and many hunting rifles on the heavier for caliber end of the spectrum. I have a 308 that loved your light magnum ammo, but I haven’t been able to find it for years now. What would be the closest alternative to it?
@Strelnikov10
@Strelnikov10 Год назад
I’ll give my opinion here on your first question. If the tips are deformed, it will effect your bc. Furthermore, I’ll bet no two tips deformed identically, which means your shot to shot consistency is going to be garbage. But I wouldn’t throw them out. As I see it, you’ve got two options. 1) use them for plinking loads in a non-precision setup and just have fun with them. 2) Try pulling the tips. Behind those tips us just a hollowpoint projectile. The polymer tips only exist to make the tips more consistent than an open meplat. Since they aren’t doing that anymore, just pull them out like a bad tooth. I’ll bet those bullets will shoot great without them.

This wss explained in the video. A monolithic copper alloy bullet has to be longer than a copper cup and lead core bullet of equal weight. It is LENGTH, not WEIGHT of the projectile that influences the twist rate required to achieve stabilized flight. Optimal twist rates will be the same for same-caliber bullets of the same overall length.

So I bet Hornady Manufacturing looked at the bullets as made by the company named GS Custom and decided their designed Turned on a lathe monolithic bullets were too costly to make. So, you continued with the method that is less costly. Drive band bullets are far superior, because the body of the bullet is bore diameter while the bands are groove diameter. GS Custom makes bullets for the target shooter with the highest BC, and they make hunting bullets for both thin skin and thick skin animals, as well as flat nose Dangerous game bullets that will work though lever action rifles, as well as single shot drillings. They are almost all Drive Band bullets in calibers from .17-.50 BMG.

Those 100gr bullets show their age and seem to not perform as well as a 6.5 creed. I'm not a fan of the 6mm creed because the ammo is hard to find and it seems very picky on powders for reloading. I think its mainly because it wasn't optimized like the 6.5 was. It seemed like they just crammed the 6mm in there and crimped it down. But in all honesty, you guys did too good of job with the CR. Now, you need to real these people back in. Just cause the cr has enough power to poke holes in paper at a k, they think the elk should drop. This ain't tag. It's a wild game animals whether it's deer, bear or elk. The 6.5 Hornady and Ruger joint work was and still is a huge success! Great job. But the thing with business owners is they are never satisfied. As, the eye of man is never satisfied- book of proverbs. Even as Eric Cortina says, you do get more bang for your buck with the .284 cal's. I believe the 7 cr with 180 grain eldm and 175 gr eldx would change the game again. And if you don't do it first, it will be your fault. The 6.8 westerner does come close. You'd have to come out with the rifle too to match the needed twist. But you know that.... You guys did a great job with the Superforamnce powder too! Hands down one of the best. It seems to me, you guys are just trying to squeeze all you can out of the 6.5. And even with the levererution ammo. I use it in my great grandfather's 94 win 30wcf built in 1910 to put down beef when I butcher at the house. It's a good product! Anyway, I used lot of your guys products and will continue to as they become avaible. I would like to see the industry put the put the current engineering into .284 with 30tc or 308 case capacities.

they had to come out with a new bullet because the eldx is a junk bullet that comes apart, obviously the testers don't know what they're doing, the eldx bullet isn't even bonded.
@pbbananas
@pbbananas Год назад
EldX is an overhauled SST to get match grade characteristics like the ELDM. Match bullets aren’t bonded for best accuracy. Bonded bullets are best used when shooting very fast so that they hold together. Slow your ELDX down with less powder or a slower cartridge to reduce stress on the bullet, increase your range to reduce impact velocities, or aim for squishier shots when impact velocities will be over 2600-2700fps (neck, behind shoulder), or switch to a stouter bonded or mono bullet. I use ELDMs which are even more prone to coming apart than ELDX but as a result, they open up at even lower velocities. Works great with mild cartridges like 308 in short barrels, or at extended ranges, but same principle. Try to match the bullet toughness to your expected impact velocity.

Gentalmen I think you also miss one opportunity for this bullet to be used for the fur hunter that is looking for a bullet that doesn't destroy hides. For a person like myself that has a predator control buisness when I need penetration at any angle but also want a bullet that doesn't destroy a valuable hide. This bullet has the potential to do both well. I hope you eventually bring out a .22 caliber bullet that would shine in a .22 Creedmoor my preferred cartridge. I will try them in both a 6 and 6.5 Creedmoors and let you know what I think after a years hunting.

Just because it can make steel ring or punch a hole in paper at distance, doesn't make it an automatic killer. This ain't tag, your it (dead). Deer and elk need a certain amount of teminal ballistics to be killed properly. Several videos on youtube show game loss due to being either being under gunned or under trained. Then they blow it off saying he'll be OK I saw him chasing cows. Dooch bags! Nathan Foster of New Zealand has some of the best information out there on terminal ballistics. Another guy, The Hard Atler Hunter, is another great guy to follow. He's also from New Zealand. He just released a video where he went home empty handed. He knew his dope. He could read the gusty wind speed. He just didnt know when the gust would happen. An ethical hunter. And, whether you admit it or not, a lot of this is driven for sales. I do love, what I know about, the 7prc and the 300prc. They are modern advancements. But wind still happens. Poor set ups still happen. People are still people. The eye of man is never satisfied.
