On this episode, Seth is joined by Joe, Jayden, and Neil and the topic of this deep dive is the 300 PRC. These folks had an early hand in the development and use of this heavy hitting cartridge. They discuss how and why it was designed, along with its military application, its hunting application, and the fun factor of this cartridge which is meant to efficiently launch heavy bullets. We know there’s a lot of 30 caliber cartridges on the market, but we think the 300 PRC is the ultimate tool for long range performance.

Fun learning about the 300 PRC. I've shot one and it's a powerhouse. I personally hunt with a 300 Weatherby, and it certainly can shoot bigger bullets than 180 gr. I haven't tested it, but according to Berger my 1in10 twist rifle can shoot up to 230 gr bullets at my elevation(5000 feet). My load for hunting is a 200 gr Accubond at 3100 FPS. Will you please make a high b.c. bonded bullet? I think a lot of hunters would love that. As you know Nosler is really slow at putting out bullets for reloaders.... It would be nice to have Hornady making a high b.c. bonded bullet.

I did the same. I got a few hundred rounds of 300PRC brass and a assortment of 30 cal bullets. About the time I was going to buy a 300PRC Ruger Precision Rifle the price went up overnight about $300.00. Primers and powder quit shipping and here I am a few years later. The 8x68 is like GOLD... Then the .300 PRC, and the 6.5 PRC must be PLATINUM... LOL.. I have never in my life seen Hornady 6.5 PRC brass in the wild. I have seen the factory loaded Hunter and Match ammo, but never any raw building materials, like the 6.5 PRC brass... Good thing I purchased 480 to 500 rounds back when the 6.5 PRC first came out like 13 years or so ago... I am fully equipped to reload my spent hornady brass. but, I would really enjoy being able to just buy a few boxes of new brass... I even have orders in with Lapua, Peterson's, ADG, and have to wait for Hornady brass to just randomly show up to the shelves... That is okay, I have waited 3 years, what is another 8 years waiting on PRC brass... LOL.. Just kidding Hornady, I realize, ya'll are under a massive work load and are doing all you can to fulfill orders. My 300 Norma gets an ES of only a few fps with factory 230 Berger ammo no matter the position. With handloads with N570 the case fill is close to 100% and with most bullets only like 5-8 grains more than the prc with an extra 100 fps. The 300 Norma wins many competitions at extended range. The 300 prc is cheaper to shoot though. I own both and take the Norma for serious canyon hunts or target shooting past a mile.

It is a personal decision of course, but if this is a dedicated ELR type rifle, 30" is very practical. You can go longer if you want to, or shorter for that matter. There is velocity to gain with longer, but it doesn't increase much per inch after 30".

I just got a gunsmith building one for me. I'm not looking to push the 225gr as fast as I can, rather focusing on barrel life - with N570, according to numbers from GRT and a calculator I found online, it's arouns 800 shots. N165 doubles it, but of course it's not the optimal powder for it. N165 has a much lower burn/flame temp than N570. Retumbo is kinda in the middle with better performance than N165.

300 prc is for shooters who don’t hand load. 300 win mag hand loaded will outperform (handle heavier projectiles without pressure problems) as the slower burning powder and case design allows. PRC is great for 212 grain and 300 win mag handles the 230 better.
@hardlylivin6602
@hardlylivin6602 4 месяца назад
As you already mentioned, handloading will get you even better performance out of a cartridge, however that same rule also applies to the 300prc. Especially if you’re going outside of the standard specs. And given the modern design attributes of the PRC series, I don’t see how a far more antiquated cartridge actually fares better with the same bullet and powder offerings. Especially since the bore diameter is the same.
@WesternReloader

I clearly see the advantage of the 300 PRC over the 300 WinMag. There's a hellava lot more to absorb here than marketing hype. Certain "facts" may be arguable, but that doesn't negate the value nor the utility of the new cartridge. That's because your individual mileage, not to mention need may vary; as is always the case. I never pay any attention to the, "We don't need no 'nother new cartridge...my (insert your favorite .30 cal banger here) will do everything this new 300 PRC will do, blah...blah...blah...", naysayers. Their ancestors were prolly the ones who told Henry Ford, "I'll stick to my horses. They are fast enough for what we need, I'll stick with them!" Incidentally, I could never figure out who the "We" were in that ubiquitously declared statement. Anyone making such a foolish assertion about what someone else's needs may or may not be, notwithstanding their wants, isn't really to be taken seriously anyway, as far as I'm concerned! It's called research and development, not, "What I've got now is all I will ever need." Kudos to Hornady and the other gun, bullet, and cartridge manufacturers who do this stuff for a living. They are the ones in the best possible position to know what will or will not perform to or above a certain standard. If I got the choice of listening to them, which I do, or heeding the admonitions of some nameless, faceless, uninformed social media critics, guess which way I'm going to lean. There was a time when black powder, flintlock, cap and ball, breach loading and single shot smokeless powder rifles, were the greatest thing since spears and arrows. I rest my case!

Just another marketing scheme. The cartridge itself is not superior to the 300 Weatherby, has a negligible improvement over the 300 Winchester Magnum and is absolutely inferior to the 30-378 Weatherby Magnum. One can see that something was odd when the 300 PRC is the only 30 caliber rifle cartridge with data for the 250 grain Hornady A - tip, and possibly the 230 grain A - tip also. (data for 225 grain .308 bullets is generally interchangeable with those at 230 grains) Finally, the massive 30 - 378 does not have data for these long, bullets. No one can convince me the rate of twist in Weatherby rifles would be inadequate or be incapable of stabilizing a .308 230 grain boat tail projectile with a high b.c. and long ogive.
