Great show fellas. Getting it on catchup. I could listen all day to you guys. Dave, you nailed it regarding the cost of manufacturing vs consumer price expectation. My kids call me a grumpy old man when I say similar, ‘Why don’t we make stuff in the UK anymore dad? Because you lot won’t want to pay £500 for your training shoes or t-shirts!!” Those US made tubes are $3k for a matched quad. I guess someone will buy them.
Funny to listen back on this to see what a bad first impression Headfirst gave you guys. Glad Jason and Dave were able to work things out without too much trouble.
Cheers from Canada guys I really appreciate you guys taking the time and answering these questions I’m listening in the background while working all the best
The AlNiCo cream needs a lot of breaking in - I’ve had my pair for a couple of years and they’re only just starting to sound nice and open now. Same probably goes for most higher wattage speakers. Cream H75 & M65 were similar but H was quicker to break in so there’s an exception 😂

Marc & Dave. I asked Dave the question about the radio station, CKLW-Detroit. It was the "Boss Radio Station." I lived in Saginaw as a child in the early 70's. Almost EVERYONE listened to that station. 50, 000 watts that could be heard in the daytime as far as Columbus, Toledo & Fort Wayne IN, Nightime in the 30+ states at night and of course in Canada. Legendary for many break out songs and acts that went national.
Thanks! We saw your note just as we signed off. Dave wasn’t familiar with it. Thanks for the super chats and clarification

@@tone-talk sure. That format, "Boss Radio" started at my old alma mater, KYNO-Fresno. KHJ-Los Angeles Johnny Mann jingles and aircheck can be heard in Taratino's movie, "Once Upon A Time In Hollywood." I'm of the "Boomer" age so most likely you both are too young. The format changed the way we listened to radio, Less yapping and more music! Here's an aircheck for you listen. Listen to the precise timing of the dj's, jingles. This station..."World Premiered Beatle songs in the 1960's. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Zsbvr3UsPDI.html
Someone needs to make a slave amp/power amp in a head box form like back in the day but with more control,eq options with more than the normal flat response,a slider eq?presence depth knob? to go above the flat response for preamps and multi effects,we want to sound good and look cool while, maybe a sag knob or switch also/voltage/tight/loose.
Not sure if this has been suggested yet, but regarding taming the flubby bass on a JTM45, I had good results with swapping the rectifier tube with a solid state plugin. If I remember right, they're about $30. Along with the coupling cap changes Dave suggested, it really makes it shine for a more super lead vibe.
I see people with with locking tuners with FOUR wraps around the peg... And then I say something and use youtube videos to back up my opinion, now that Dave just stated a half a wrap, I only need this video!
It really depends on the guitar and the tuners, you have to have some angle behind the nut. I'm using 1 and a half wraps, with locking tuners 3/4. And I'm not stretching the strings. Never had tuning stability issues!
The Ayam cemani is a rare breed of chicken from Indonesia. They have a dominant gene that causes hyperpigmentation(fibromelanosis), making the chicken mostly black, including feathers, beak, and internal organs. The Cemani is a very popular gamecock for cockfighting in Bali. This is due to the fact that their thighs have much more muscle compared to other chickens which leads to them being much faster. Tone-Talk = educational. Make your kids watch it.
People complain about social media but how else will you gain an incidental education in the esoteric poultry best used for Indonesian island cockfighting while watching something about guitar amps
If anyone wants to hear Naylor Amps, check out Thoranetta Davis - Sunday Morning Music on Sub-Pop. The late Phil Durr had a full Naylor stack when he toured on that record.
I wish someone would cryo process the core materials for the transformers before prewind, the change in resistance of the core windings would be an interesting tone experiment.
I love lugging gear home at one in the morning buzzing after a good gig. But then again, I'm only 53 so maybe I've still got that that youthful optimism going for me
I missed this live. Im firmly convinced, that the less stuff and features are in amp, the better it sound. Dave once mentioned he wants to do single knob amp, was it joke or just wish, to have market for that. I see, lot of people are buying amps for features and not for sound and it backfires often greatly. Cheers, keep episodes comming ;).
I have a ‘61 Fender Brown Deluxe. It is basically a volume knob and a tone knob. We all know our amps sound different in in each room/ stage. Having a single tone knob makes it super easy and hassle free to make an adjustment, quit tweaking (and worrying about it) and get playing. Yes, the amp is not super versatile but if you like the sound, you are good to go. You can swap the speaker to get the sound more to your liking. The simplicity is refreshing.
@@Euphonicmusicschool maaaaan, thats a dream amp. I played once 50ties original Tweed Champ and I was surprised how easy is to dial in many different sound just using guitar volume and pick dynamics. It was kinda like, set the max gain you want on amp and work from there with guitar, it cleand super well, maybe something like tight modern metal is not there, but up to heavy rock (say early Black Sabbath tone), I was able to do anything.
The less crap amp has in signal path the better. I made amp for myself from scratch. No tone stack, just gain pot and Vox style Cut/tone pot after phase inverter. Goes from country to Iron Maiden just from adjusting guitars volume pot.
@Dave Friedman if you see this question which I doubt you will.....How far would a bright cap on the high volume of a 1986 bass spec 50 watt Marshall take me in getting the lead spec sound. I love the amp already and Im not sure how much I want to change. Just curious about the sound difference a bright cap will make on a bass spec 50 watt from 1970. Also is it possible to do a pull pot so I can have it in and out of the circuit. Thanks!
@@tone-talk Cool thanks Dave! I wonder if it works with the volume at around 6 to 7?? That's where I always have it as it has plenty of breakup/overdrive there. I dont play very clean....only the roll back guitar dirty clean. Might try it just to see anyway. It sounds great as is in the room but curious about a lead spec mod in it since it already sounds so good might be even better. Or to have both circuits switchable would be ideal. Be great to have a way to have both and switch back and forth since this amp isn't a pristine example anyway. Peace and thank you!
Hey Dave missed the stream. Im a huge fan of your product. Just purchased a pre-owned BE-100. Love it, but im not sure about some odd ball switches, Would love to send you a pic, amp sounds great, but the Overdrive isn't "exactly" what i had expected. Again still love it. But would love the opportunity to discuss with you to maybe get an understanding what mods may have been done, also realizing without you physically having the amp, it would be difficult at best. Thanks in advance...
Dave a have noticed on my 100 deluxe that I prefer the response and freq switches both to the right like you suggested and when I do want that thicker grungier sound like Alice and Jerry I do prefer the freq switch over to the left. It’s such a freaking good amp man. Thing blows my mind everytime I play it. A quick question, the C45 I love the top end and mids in that mode but the bass does this stringy sound if that makes sense, and I just wish there was a way to keep the bass in standard be mode and combine it with the highs and mids of C45. Any suggestions to achieve this?
Make the FriedEg Amp exclusive to the class but make sure there are a lot of classes otherwise people are going to be hawking them on FB groups ebay and reverb for BANK
Loving this show, you guys do a great job. You should consider having fellow Aussie Jason from Headfirst Amplification on the show he makes and mods amps and is very knowledgeable. Would get on great with Dave. Check out Headfirst Amplification on RU-vid if you're not familiar with him
Love the show but OMG, how many times do we have to hear the “it depends on what you are trying to do” answer I get it, everyone gets it, it depends on variables. But instead of not answering, just answer with some of your own mixed variables What is best xxx flanger? Instead of the “it depends”. Try This xxx flanger is good for country, this is good for rock, this is good for metal etc. just insert your own variables please!!
Thanks for watching the show and your feedback. I’ll tell you it’s really hard on the spot to give advice when some key elements are missing like what amp or style of music you play. When things are a little more specific we can be a lot more specific. We will try your advice some more. Thx
disagree w the OP. a lot of those questions are terribly subjective to be asking dave on the spot. they are better suited to going to a forum like gear page where a dialogue can actually be had about what someone is looking for. personally im annoyed they take so many of those questions....
Thanks for taking my comment into consideration and I totally get that a lot of these are so subjective. Maybe since the questions are so broad, answer it broadly? “X” flanger is good with scooped amp and “y” chorus is nice with mid forward amp etc. or just stop fielding these super specific questions on the spot? Gather them, take time and have an episode where you answer these later. Thanks
Marc Great show! 🤘😎🤘 Maybe you can help me out with something? I noticed we both have about the same numbers of guitars and wanted to ask you how much actual playing you do over the course of a week? I have been thinking that maybe i own too many for a bedroom rocker even though i play a good bit. Now i have my eyes on a damn 2021 epiphone 59 les paul even though i already have a gibson goldtop re issue! It is insanity! there is always "another one" i want! 😵💫
Hey thanks man! I’ve also gotten to the point that I have too many guitars and I think I could sell a few more off. I’ve got 19 guitars. I know guys with many many more but for me I think I should scale down a bit. But consider I have 5 VH replica guitars. Just because I’m a huge VH fan. I love them on my walls. The others are truly my babies. At some point it’s a little too much especially with space. Since I work at home I play at least 30 min to an hour a day. Maybe more some days. And I usually rotate playing my guitars because I do like the different feeling and sounding guitars. It’s fun. I also have too many amps but that’s another question and another day 😂
@@tone-talk It is a miracle you found that many in lefty! 🤣 I am a lefty but play right handed, this happened by my own ignorance. all my fav players were right handed with the exeption of Jimi. looking back i am glad i made that error.
Thank you, this is way better than Ask Joe Rogan. Ask him about brain surgery and he will take about his prostate. Here... nothing but facts and really really good opinions about amps.
@@tone-talk and the BE is basically a 1959 hi channel with a triode infront of it.........theres nothing new that hasnt already been done before. Everyone just rehashes the past and serves it up as new. Being the first to copy something doesnt mean you own it. Theres no question that Dave has done amazing things for the amp community with his products and marketing but asking Headfirst to have some originallity was laughable.
Dave do remember an amp Guy I. Detroit he also reconed speakers his name was Fast Eddie he was old when I was a teenager how about Pyramid Guitars the made a kick ass humbucker.
Dave, I love you, but you know in your heart, you can not stretch a string. You can pull them till they seat, but you can not stretch a string. You can seat it, but you can not stretch one. If I am wrong, prove it.
well I disagree with this.. So let say we have a floyd Rose and its locked tightly at both ends.. No moving or slipping in any way.. This is a new string.. You stretch it and then check it its then severely out of tune...
