Sennheiser 609 and 906… very underrated mics. Every guitarist should keep one in their guitar case or studio!

I met Joe Barresi in LA, in ‘02, at the House of Blues. Super nice guy, and a reputed specialist in recording heavy guitars. You should have him on. It would make for interesting conversation. Thanks guys! Hope you’re having a good weekend :)

I love...LOVE this show, and am so grateful for you both! To the audience: Guys, you're talking to DAVE FRIEDMAN, and you're asking questions like "what amp should I use for AC/DC tone" or "tell me where to put the knobs on my amp to sound like EVH." Literally ANY Marshall and not much gain, and turn the knobs until it sounds good. Sweet, any actual questions?

I'm a pretty regular watcher and can't believed I missed this! I'm the guy the ClydeTone is named after. It was a joke, I told him "Yeah you can put my name on the faceplate, at my age it's the closest I'll ever get to an endorsement." 😂😂 The drive channel is his take on a Slash's AFD sound. It's doesn't have anything to do with the SIR thing. When I asked about it he said it was actually a modification he likes the sound of on the BE circuit. The clean channel is based on a blackface Fender Twin, but after my amp the ClydeTones got a plexi inspired channel in place of the Fender.

Yeah, lot of love here for e906 mic (different than e609). Works wonders for easy cab micing. Easy to place too.

I feel like a celebrity being “the guy who criticized about saying it depends”. I love the show and wasn’t trying to bust your balls, but get you to do exactly what you did. Which was to encourage people to be much more specific. Thanks for another great show!

I just recently bought an Ampete with an attenuator loop from Rob at Rack Systems. I put my Fryette PS2 in the loop. Anyway, Ampete already has the attenuator loop in their most recent amp switchers.

Was that guy joking who asked why they still include a volume knob on guitars? IF he was being serious then that was the most ignorant and foolish question i ever heard asked here!

One thing I always want to ask these master amp builders is that since most of our favorite tones (including Dave's) come from non-master volume classic circuits where the players get cleans by lowering the guitar volume knob why don't they offer one to the public?

Was always hoping EVH would put out a simple one channel amp that sounded like his original Marshall. I still cant believe he's gone. Just recently have been able to start listening to Van Halen again

Its funny that Dave says that when you get older you learn to use less gain. Which I truly believe. But in Eds case he went with more gain. haha

American River ... what a blast! BTW... I've been meaning to get one if those Sennheiser mics... and also...I've been saving my Fireballs for Halloween! 😈🤘😎🎸🌊🚣

609. Great mic. Put one on a tom once. Sounded great. but the drummer bashed it and made a nice hoop shaped dent on it. hahaha Never used on drums again.

I agree with Dave about Gain. When i see players that are after the old VH tone saying the BE does not have enough i have to LMAO Because the BE has more gain than Ed's plexi ever had. Ed's plexi really did not have that much gain at all. For me I like sustain not gain. I want the note to ring out for fuzz out. as for the EVH 5153 amp i do not think it is anything like his old Marshall. When he first came out with the 5150 with PV i was scratching my head in total confusion.

The excessive gain issue is an interesting one. I've learned about this myself playing guitar since the 70s. I made the same mistake that others make. What happens is, in your mind you're hearing more gain than ever existed on the recordings. So when you are trying to recreate the tones you end up adding too much gain. It's psychological. Let's face it guitar players like game. We put too much gain on our guitar sometimes. And when we're listening to ourselves play We're hearing things that other people are not. We're hearing nuances and sounds of our playing in our minds, but in the real world, the listener isn't hearing it the same way. Bottom line is, whatever good good tone we've come up with along with the nuances of our playing is actually buried behind too much gain sometimes. As the player we don't notice it. When other people hear it they just hear the gain. A good technique to avoid the pitfall: Every once in a while, think of an old song that you like from the 60s, 70s, 80s or whatever you like, and play it in your MIND and try to conceive of the level of gain in the guitar. Then pull up those old recordings and carefully listen to how little gain there is. You'll be amazed. The mind ADDS gain to our favorite guitar tones.

Install Treble bleed on your volume pots and start using them. From clean to drive, piano to forte you have it all then. No need for chanells, noise gates, supressors, noiseless pickups and other crap...

I'm a guitar player but I will grab the JT Amplification bass D.I. because I need a good bass DI but also know John T makes good stuff. I had played some pedals he made in the past and was very impressed. Good dude too. Glad to hear he works with the Friedman team.

BE-100 is quieter, yet gets enough balls. Retains full definition with girth when cranked. EVH head has more balls, but gets noisy and loses tone the more you crank it.
