Questioning whether to go to sleep or continue watching, until I paused the video at 14:27 at a perfect moment where both Eric and Omar are blinking on the same frame. By pressing , and . keys you can move frame by frame, and so, through my curiosity taking over, I noticed that had I paused the video even a single frame earlier, Omar wouldn't have blinked yet. One frame later, and Eric would've opened his eyes. Thank you Overlords, for this is a sign for ya boi to get off youtube for the night.

Wow love this episode. Eric hit the nail on the head for my life. "cut off your bulk at 15% bf" I need to do a proper serious cut to get under 15% bodyfat, my body does not find it sustainable and I've been there 3 times in my adult life at now 38 YO. forever spinning my wheels, forever unhappy with my body, always wanting more muscle and aways seeing myself as fat so I'm always in a lose/lose scenario. I need real help and guidance here.

Pretty much the exact same here except I'm turning 37 in a few weeks. The answer I think is to just swallow it and have a long, productive bulk over 6-12 months, completely take your mind off of leanness and focus solely on the gym, progressive overload and at least try not to gain too quickly. I always thought of bulking from chiseled to lean and then cut back to chiseled, but I've come to realize that unless you're pretty gifted genetically (like a friend of mine who's naturally at 9-10% and has to forcefeed himself to go above 13% or so and built plenty muslce in that range just fine), you'll probably bulk from "somewhat lean" to "normal" and then diet back down to "somewhat lean" again. And of course, to you and I, "normal" feels like "fat as hell" even when people tell us different. And we look at them like "you just don't understand", but I've been having too many people now tell me that I'm just too lean and too skinny and to just eat more to ignore it or waive it off like they don't know what they're talking about. It's morel likely I'm suffering from body dysmorphia and need to start to just deal with things. All that being said, I'm a few months into this bulk, trying to pace myself and I'm determined to let myself get a lot less lean than I have in many, many years while putting everything into my workouts. I hope you found a good way in the months since your post.

I just turned 40 and am probably around 13% BF and floating around 160-162lbs. I really appreciated the maintenance convo towards the end. With COVID, I've been working out at home for the last 10 months. As much as I want to add muscle (and not let my BF creep up too much), it is near impossible right now. Cutting will just make me look too thin. I needed to hear it was ok to just work on getting better at my current workouts and being ok with any incidental recomp. Thanks!

I was the last 25 years between 30-35% body fat. When is started to workout, loos fat and building muscle i had to learn, that i can not sustain lower that 20% bodyfat. Means 20% is the point, where i start tu bulk, and arround 25% is the point i cut again down to 20%. Works well for me, and iam happy with this numbers.

Just finished my first cut (down to a very sustainable ~12%) in order to give myself headroom for a long bulk. For me I'm glad I did this cut, as I learnt a lot about my ability to diet. Now have the confidence to bulk as I know I can cut to an aesthetic ok level without much psychological cost. Pretty comfortable to run up to ~18% over the next year or more.

I don't think going by body fat percentage is very helpful for most people. It's really hard to get an accurate reading of bodyfat for most people. Even with the best tools we have available now it's still difficult and eyesight testing is unreliable. We can get a since of directionality, sure, but that's nothing that weight loss isn't already telling us. With that said, I think a waist measurement combined with BMI is far, far better for telling us two things, one, a person's overall health as it relates to the various obesigenic disorders that all fall under that umbrella, and two, how lean a person is. We know that a 6' tall male with a waist measurement of 31-32 inches is very lean, and at very little risk of body weight related disorders. If you're a 6' tall male with a waist measurement of 31", you are very, very close to being in contest shape (if not already), of course assuming adequte nutrition and training. Whereas I would not recommend that a male start bulking if their waist measurement was at or above 37", regardless of what some silly bodyfat machine said because we know risk factors start creeping up beyond that point; the medical literature is clear on this. Body fat has become an obsession in the fitness industry, and a detriment to many individuals mental health I'd wager, while not necessarily being a good marker for overall health (not that anyone cares about that). I would like us to move away from talking about body fat, and instead focus on more useful metrics.

I think the experience of combat sports athletes can be added here. For example, Daniel Cormier was arguably at his best at his fattest. As for myself, as a wrestler and later a Brazilian jiu-jitsu competitor, I found that I felt better competing at a higher weight class with extra fluff around my midsection than trying to compete as lean as possible.

I recently injured my back and I am mid-cut (about 40%) done. It looks like I won’t be able to lift for a few weeks. How does one approach this problem? It’s crushing my soul. When I get back to the gym, do I abandon the cut and try to regain for a while? Issue is I will have put on fat by then because being stuck at home without lifting has thrown me way off my diet.

Hi Eric, I just saw your video with Jeff. It was wonderful as always, we might haven't interacted much, but I've gone through your content in detail, I mean I've read the muscle and strength pyramids, videos, podcasts and stuff along with Jeff's ultimate guide to body recomposition. Following the advice, although I've good amount of muscle mass, I've been able to drop my body fat% from around 52% to around 30-35%. In the guide, he recommends, staying at a calorie deficit of 20% and further dividing it into macros and stuff, but my main query in the video is that you recommended to lose weight between 0.5-1.5% per week, however, at various places I've seen 1% as the cap, so will you say, it's safe to lose at 1.5% or should we set the max cap at 1%?
@net-zokhul2838
@net-zokhul2838 3 года назад
If you are above 20% maybe 25% BF you should be fine with 1,5% loss. Otherwise you need to be dieting forever.
@LukePettit
@LukePettit 3 года назад
Fat loss nerd Martin Macdonald has a formula for rate of weight loss based on BF% Body fat % / 15 (aggressive) or 20 (conservative) = % of bodyweight loss per week (on average) So 30/15 = 2% bodyweight a week 30/20 = 1.5% bodyweight a week Once you're down to 20% body fat, that will become 1.3 to 1% bw/wk Basically the more you have to lose the more aggressive you can be.

Most bodybuilders are concerned with how to most quickly put in muscle mass, regardless of how much fat they put on. P ratio is largely irrelevant to them. P ratio is of interest to academics.

I haven't made my way through the whole thing yet, but this seems to ignore the advice (for most beginners?) to stay *around* maintenance, maybe a slight difference, get into a good resistance training regimen, and just build muscle without gaining too much fat along the way?
