If this guy was one of my college professors I could have been a brain surgeon. Incredibly well spoken and clearly conveys all the information. Nice video
The best thing for the ecodiesel is to clean the map sensor and the mass air flow sensor at every oil change and change the fuel filter every 15,000 miles. Doing this will keep you out of the shop and will keep your MPG at it's best. I also have a TS PERFORMANCE throttle position module on my 2016 ecodiesel and it MASSIVELY REDUCES turbo lag. I have 60,778 miles on mine and still get 702 miles per tank on the highway. That's 27-28 miles per gallon. And I get around 575 miles per tank city driving. Just keep your sensors clean beyond your regular routine maintenance and see the difference for yourself. (Oil burners are #1 for mpg)
I'd love a video on cleaning MAP and MAF sensors. I've never done mine and am at 126k miles. Still get 700 miles on a tank highway. City is only about 500. Less during winter. I do my fuel filter every 15k.
482,000 miles on my ED transporting Airstreams. First motor pushed out a head gasket at 371k. Partly my fault. Original 8 speed no issues. New motor has 24 month unlimited mileage warranty bought at discount for $5,500. Basic R&R $1500. Ordered delivered & swapped inside a week. GDE tune w turbo brake. Great truck for towing 1/2 ton appropriate loads w WDH. Routinely tows 6K TTs. 30 HWY, 23 around town, 15 towing at 65.
Yeah, of you take care of a ED, it will last you. If you dont, it wont last you. I was nervous about getting one since it seems everyone on the internet has issues with theirs, but my friend who is a diesel mechanic has one that had 120k vouched that if i take care of it then it will be decent.
I have a 2014 ram ecodiesel limited and only problem with the truck from the factory was the turbo. They replaced it under warrenty but it's my favorite truck and have had no problems with it since.
I just got a new one, I traded for my Tundra due to the MPG and my work, I drive about 10k miles every month. I gotta say I loved my Tundra and I would have keep it but when u drive for a living is a different thing, i went from averaging 13-17mpg to 28-33pmg. Anyways let’s see how it holds 😅
This gentleman is spot on with his analysis, I have a 2016 and love it. Green Diesel Engineering is the company they send the ECMs to. Fantastic people there, the new tune was like night and day after the dealer re tune.
Getting ready to have my 2016, 53,000 miles EcoDiesel back in the shop for the sixth time over the service throttle control light on. I did not want the software update, but was forced into it on my fourth visit. It did not fix the issues the light came back on which puts my truck into limp mode. The last fix was to replace turbo charger. Got a hundred two miles down the road and the light came back on again. Whoa is me. And I really was happy about this truck until I had all these issues. Would a delete and tune help fix this issue, cuz apparently they have no clue. Also, is there a way to put my truck back to original factory set, , and get rid of that software update, cuz it's affected my mileage performance and the feel of the accelerator, which my understanding they've got a fix for that coming out soon. I would appreciate help... this is becoming a nightmare.
All I can say is, wow! Extremely knowledgeable about this engine. Very informative video, you obviously know your engines. Great video and wish you were in my neck of the woods for maintenance.
I own a 2018 ECD I currently have 16k which isn’t much but I have not had any issues besides the 3 recalls (Lol) which are not for engine or drivetrain. I enjoy driving it everyday I lifted and installed 35” Toyo with 22” wheels -44 offset I have been considering deleting truck for the last six months and will be doing it this year. Either GDE tune or other brand tune
Yup combined with the bottom end failures ,the fuel savings aren’t enough to offset the weak engine that likely won’t make 200,000 miles without needing a long block,an egr cooler and a DPF ,and DOC catalyst. If you have to have a Fiat product your better off taking your chances with a Hemi and hoping it doesn’t wipe a cam lobe. I have never seen a bottom end go out of a Hemi that wasn’t making waaayyy over stock power.
The only mention of the cam gear moving was the youtuber who committed suicide...hard to take him seriously after that. I have 20000 miles on my ecodiesel without any issues. In my opinion some of the problems can be attributed to people who have never owned a diesel and bought these treating them like hemis.
@@JohnDiMartino I drive a 99 f250 xcab 7.3 300,000 km with regular service, some times over service IE fixing before it's needed. Zero issues envy of every hard working trucker every time it goes to the shop especially in this SALT BATHED South Central Ontario. Bought used soon needed a torque converter, no brainer for a complete tranny $2700 can. No egr, DEF Try that on new stuff today.
Matt Smith excellent point, here I was avoiding them thinking the engine is plagued with issues. Problem is the average joe doesn't know shit about diesel upkeep, then acts surprised when it blows up or eats its bearings.
Its interesting that the ED in the jeep has extremely low fails but the ED in the pickup is having more engine fails. I read the stories of the fails and I see 2014 and 2015 were worse so I assume the factory learned something. I have the GDE tune and the truck runs great. I use Rotella T6 and I change the oil when the engine says it is at 10%. My warranty on the engine is to 100k miles and I still have 35k miles to go (2 years) until i remove the EGR. I would really like to be like some of the guys who are 300k + miles
I got my 2016 used with 1,000 miles on it and wanted to yank the EGR right of the bat but worried about the SMOG which unfortunately I still have to pass. So far I have the Banks intake and Banks dual 3" exhaust on it and I went to Eneos 5W40 Full Synthetic Oil and definitely seems to run much smoother than the crap the dealer was using on it.
I have 2018 1/2 ton with eco diesel. The only problem so far is there is lag time when leaving a stop and making a turn, seems like no fuel and then takes off.. Kinda scary when traffic is coming. Complained to dealer at service time they said no fault codes and they never had any other complaints for this. Can't believe it is only me? Any others had this problem?
My 16 eco diesel acts the same way and turned to junk after having egr recall done and in the process they snuck in the emission recall without my consent. Completely different truck now. No $3K either. FCA won't pay because the deadline fort he emissions recall has closed. FCA is a joke. I'm gonna move this ED in the near future and no more Chrysler stuff for me, ever.
I am getting different advice about oil I should use in my 2014 EcoDiesel Jeep ? Is 15W40 ok for my 3L EcoDiesel Jeep? I run 15W40 in all my trucks and tractors on my small farm.
formerice love to see when u did the tune. Tough to throw out the 100 k warranty! 27k on my Ediesel and I’m interested in ppei or green diesel but the warranty??
I did GDE at 50,000 and now I have 90,000. I purchased the truck used with 41,000. Totally worth it, more power, better MPG, and the engine will last longer.
The emissions problem could be fixed by people stopping their purchases of any new vehicles with emission controls. Who wins, regulation? Or the manufacturers pocket book? Problem solved.
Daniel Haynie ... Actually, if the manufacturers of diesel engines just make the emissions equipment part of regular maintenance, then these engines will benefit. As I always say, YOU'VE got to pay to play!! Want a modern diesel engine, then it comes with extra maintenance!! Problem solved.
I'm on second engine, aftermarket EGR, then did egr delete, then did full delete...all to get rid of red lightening bolt of death. Finally got rid of it with a tune from Alberta Canada. Had to send computer like mentioned in video.
These are garbage, they have done nothing but flood our shop with all similar issues and it just will not stop, the intakes melt, the turbos go bad, the fuel lines deteriorate, and the exhaust gets stopped up. But I guess I can’t complain!! This pile of crap has given me job security 👌
Only 5% of ecodiesels have engine failure (yes, higher than the normal 5 year old truck, but not as bad as what you are describing and not as bad as it seems from all the people complaning on the internet).
You can delete the EGR using a tune, deleting the DPF is very involved and not recommended. DPF deletion is what causes your vehicle to pump out black smoke from the tailpipe.
I came across you guys as I'm doing research on the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee, I've owned diesels for years, 03 Jetta, '11 Golf, and '15 Audi A3. I'm in Kitchener. Keep up the great vids!
I found a 2014 ecodiesel with 49.000miles on this truck 1 owner.. and i found another 2017 with 55.000miles 1 owner which one i buy...thanks for you help and great video and plenty of information in your video...
Great video. I have a 2016 RAM Eco diesel Truck. I don't see the advantage of my Ecodiesel with diesel price 90 cents above gasoline prices. My towing capacity is less and acceleration is slower while not seeing savings at the pump due to diesel fuel prices. Maintenance cost more and repairs are more expensive. Diesel are great if your looking to tow but I would recommend a bigger truck.
the main advantage ( and reason I bought one) is longevity. I keep my vehicles for as long as possible. I still have my 04 Dakota. Love it. So in the long run I am hoping this engine lasts my lifetime. Other than that, you are right the $4k price tag for the diesel and $.90 / .75 per gallon more is not all that advantageous. Hemi is quicker. He hit it perfectly. I am not towing anything over 7k lbs and it is not all the time ( mostly for weekend projects) so i splurged and got a 2016. Great video. Keep posting them. I am still learning and this is my first diesel.
Angelo the long jevity would be a good argument if these motors didn't have a lot of issues and we're blowing up or failing. I own a 16 ecodiesel and it has been to the shop 5 times for issues. I'm sure you can look it up 5.7 hemi is a solid motor and last a long time with good maintenance . I personally know 2 people with 5.7 over the 200k mark no issues.
Mike maybe older Hemi’s. The new ones with variable valve timing seem to have lifter and cam issues which are expensive to repair. Seems like GM is the only one who can build a reliable truck engine these days.
What a surprise when this came on and I thought I was about to see Matt from Bleepin Jeep! First time viewer of the channel and love the content (especially the intro music lol). Keep up the good work!
I'd love to see more videos about the eco diesel engine from you guys. Maybe a video about bulletproofing the eco diesel and a problems video so all of us who have this engine can bulletproof them to last a long time. I have a 14 grand Cherokee summit with the eco diesel in it. I'm running the GDE tune and have 90k on mine no issues but been seeing alot of engine oil blow by into my intercooler. Would love to know all the things I should do to this engine to keep it running good. I change my oil every 10k and fuel filters every 20k to keep fluids good in the engine and to keep the engine happy.
2014 Ecodiesel here. The only issue I've had is a recurring engine code P26AB that designates some 3 way coolant valve for the transmission. Dealer wants 600 to fix it, studied up on it online, it appears it does not cause any issues whatsoever, so I just bought a code reader online and delete it every 8 months or so that it shows up.
I have a 14 ram1500 with a 5.7 hemi I hade the same code the 3 way coollent control valve is vary easy to replace it’s 2-3 bolts a plug and 3 hoses literally all you have to do is clamp off three hoses disconnect em unplug the connector undo the 2-3 bolts swap out the part reverse the what you did. And your done took me less then an hour to do wort part is it’s a dealer only part
A lo mejor, alos gringos no les gusta traerlas como salen de fábrica, le quitan le ponen partes las reprogram asta que les dan en la madre, y luego nomas dicen estas camionetas no sirven.
Very clear and helpful video. Good to know why they had bearing failures. Would you be able to make another video clearing up information and misinformation regarding cam gear failure? or was that just internet bs? also any issues with the bosch cp4 on these?
EcoDiesel lovers will not appreciate these facts. DO NOT TOW. ANYTHING. I could have done Ram commercials when I first took delivery on my 2015. For FREE. I loved that truck. It was the sharpest looking and greatest running vehicle I've had in a real long time. I got more raves on it than my Cadillacs I've owned. Twice I exceeded 30 miles per gallon and I know a guy who hit 32 mpg on his. Towing is not what this machine was made for. Ram service advisors flat-out told me they have to be driven like a sport car, empty and hard. I towed a camper trailer and I was in my limits including GVWR. Ram has stopped production for 2019 on all their US platforms that offered the EcoDiesel. I had my 2015 for 54k miles before I threw in the towel. TWO engines, TWO turbos, TWO rear ends and then the speed controller failed. All but the speed controller was backed by Ram, including loaners, but after I paid for the speed controller I dumped that truck like a hot rock. I'm in a Cummins 2500 Limited now. We'll see what this beautiful black beast will do.
It will fail you. Just like all the junk they make now. Just a bigger piece of shit. It might look better though on the back of a flatbed with it dies on you. Probably the only difference. Keep it shined up so when it shits out on you it looks sharp getting towed to the dealer. Meanwhile you can grease your ass up for when they tell you whatever failed is out of warranty. If it makes it that long until the first major failure.
At 56k my 2015 Jeep eco diesel died one day. The EGR valve failed due to being filled with the crap that comes back through the exhaust. $2600.00 later it ran again. A mandatory part for the vehicle not covered under warranty. Absolutely worthless emissions system, that is not needed to make the vehicle run.
Had same issue at 97,000K, but cost me $4200!! How do they get away with not covering under emissions warranty? After several calls and letters to Chrysler, I realized they just don’t care!
Fred Robinson at that price I would have just ripped that crap off of there for 1500$ and had a clean runnin no dpf machine. Mine went at 56,000 clogged dpf, failed egr, sensors etc etc. almost 7k for all new system that only lasted 56000 miles in the first place, waste of shit emmisions
Fred Robinson FCA has a recall on the EGR coolant which is a fire hazard. You should be able to recoup any monies now. I have the extended warranty from Mopar that covers it. $100 deductible but no charge now because of the recall.
Lowest mile engine I've seen blown up is 9k. One of the reasons they explode is people dont wait 15 minutes after filling the oil before starting it. It drains to the pan real slow
ROFL WTF? So you're saying it drains real slow to the pan? In that case when driving it wouldn't it all collect in the top end of the engine and blow up?
Would love to hear more about tuning an Ecodiesel. Great engine and transmission. I get avg 14L/100km. I tow a approx 5000 lb 28’ travel trailer and the truck does it we easy. One fault is it needs more upper rpm HP. 2016 with 60K km
Mines junk. Broken bolt on the turbo assembly 2 timing chain cover gaskets one valve cover gasket an alternator and battery cars from all the leaks Dodge didn't even pay for the alternator and battery... All preventive maintenance has been done
@@allenklingsporn6993 the 7.3 was a pretty good engine... the 6.0 and 6.4 could be made to be good engines if you dump money into them. The bottom line is government regulation killed the simple and reliable Diesel engine. However with some money and time you can do some work on your engine to get that back.
I loved my ecoDiesel, but the engine failed at 58,000 miles; piston broke and engine seized. Fortunately, it was covered under warranty. But, I lost trust in the truck and traded it for a 2500 Cummins.
@@mexisniper196 yes sounds like the repair shops love em, great for business, I've always been a mopar person since I was a puppy, but I'm hearing some pretty troubling things about this fiat ownership not going well as far as the consumer getting left holding the bag. They know how long they will last , and they make em to last just past the warranty.
Excellent video, thank you for posting! I have an ecoDiesel and so far running well but nice to know you are in Listowel Ontario which is relatively close to me, I will keep you in mind when/if I have issues. Do you cover warranty work? I purchased the extended Chrysler warranty for my 2017 Laramie ecoDiesel.
Here in California the diesel cost more than gas and the Diesel additive you have to buy makes it very expensive to drive. Definitely glad I got the Hemi 5.7. 20MPG is fine for me and no problems👍🏻
That would have been a good video if you would have talked about the issues like the title says. Maybe a better title would have been a discussion or tour of the EcoDiesel engine.
My 2015 Ecodiesel Camshaft sprokett that drives to Fuel pump came loose and valves hit pistons and broke all the rockers. Tried to buy a long block and they are no longer aviable. A complete motor is aviable but none in stock and no ETA. Anyway I am fixing what is broken. Maybe the fuel seized up ? Does any one know how to fix Camshaft sprokett bolt problem?
would you recommend purchasing a used Ram with Eco Diesel with around 100K miles? all I can find in my price range I want the fuel economy & something I can put a plow on my driveway only
Guy's I have a question I went today to see a 2016 dodge ram try to purchase but I did a test drive the truck have the engine light on and don't go more them 45mph and I believe 4 gear anything that ur guy's can tell me that can be the problem I was thinking about the DEF sensor but im not mechanic the guy on the dealer told me is something of the exhaust.. but I do not want to buy a truck if i cant fix those problems or if they fix and like a month later will be the same also the truck have 101,000 miles on please help me with answers
Is it safe to say these engines can last if you have general knowledge on diesels? such as normal oil changes, changing fuel filters, never running it out of gas, and deleting the emissions BS that chokes it off?
Chrysler should supply inflatable Italian mechanic with every truck they sell, just pull the rip cord instant mechanic also don't forget pull him out from the glove compartment before deploying because you might have mess on your hands.

Well, it seems to have survived the -30F cold snap we just had. I also had it up in Maine where temps were about the same last year. You can get a cord for $25 that allows you to plug in the truck, that helps a lot, but the diesel fuel does gel if it is not blended properly in winter.
200,000 km deleted since 86,000. Great trucks just need to ditch the emissions. With a light tune you can get 500 lbs of torque and the fuel efficiency of a Honda civic. I've gotten 1350 km on a tank (really slow all highway of course)
@gimik2 complete horseshit. U r just another hillbilly that doesnt understand engineering and/or people wanting to breath clean air. I have asthma. U should try it some time. I also have a deleted 900hp cummins but its a race truck not street truck. So my polution is limited to 10 races a year vs every day. Daily drivers should never need to be deleted if used as a truck
NPC #47273552 the dealership I bought my Cummins at doesnt deny a warranty claim unless the delete is the direct cause of an issue. They deal with deleted trucks all the time which is why I purchased from them. I know of other dealerships which act like ass holes with warranties and deletes.
thank-you for your patience, since this video we have moved and renovated a new shop with more space, we had to put our videos on hold while we are all getting settled in, were starting up with our marketing dept in april 2019 so stay tuned!
I bought a new 2016 limited 4x4 with the eco. At 34k it spun #2 rod bearing and broke a connecting rod bolt, just one bolt the other was backed out but did not break. New crate motor installed. At 55k had to have the egr cooler replaced, it was leaking internally and burning coolant. Not covered by warranty, but will be a covered component after new tune as part of settlement. Of all the new trucks I have owned this one has been the worst engine wise. After the class settlement is done I'm probably done with this truck. The guru diesel mechanic in my area, that works for a ram dealer, who also works privately on the side, has told me point blank this is the worst engine he has had to work on.
So my truck apparently spun the bearing at 240k so I got good amount of kms but damn it happened out of no where. What is that class action law suit and is it over yet.?
My mechanic who is a master technician for a chrysler dealership says the same thing. VM Motori is easily the worst diesel he has ever worked on. Not a good engine. Stay away.
Shit oil, shit filters, shit maintenance shit owners cold running and hot shut offs. Should come with a mandatory tutorial session. And every vehicle gas diesel or otherwise should have a bypass oil filtration kit.
My 16 EcoDiesel with 65k miles is having an issue with coolant loss. I get white smoke for around 1 minute after starting it. I also have coolant loss. About 16 oz every 600 miles. The EGR has been deleted and the oil and coolant look clean and the truck runs well. Any ideas? Thanks.
Amiran On The Road I have 92k on my 2015, only problems was two blown turbos, two starters and miscellaneous issues electric , rust etc. I did the software update in June and back in November noticed an anti freeze coolant smell. I called the dealer to set up an appointment with loaner. The dealer advised it was the EGR cooler and no parts available. It seems a few vehicle fires have caused a recall. It’s stemming from the software update. The Ecodiesel operating temperatures are even higher with a significant turbo lag and less miles per gallon since the update. The class action lawsuit offered $3,075 USD plus an extended warranty. I know the class action lawsuit also has a buyback which will likely be next now.
Miss my eco diesel too bad she had a take a shit several times on me . I babies that truck so much and took it in to every scheduled and required maintenance to a certified ram dealer to get worked on
so, which one should I go for? I got stuck among duramax, cummin, ford diesel( french peugeot/renault diesel) and this italian fiat diesel, can you recommend? thx
2016, 60.000 kms. Tows 30 ft Rv, 6500 lbs in the Rockies like a champ, there is no comparison to ANY gas for torque and fuel economy. I give it only the best oil and Shell V Power diesel. Sure, the Hemi out accelerates it but with what fuel price and depreciation. No going back for me.
WC Moffatt it doesn’t make the power. I’ve seen many people swap them into smaller trucks and they have to be turned up so high that you can’t make them a everyday vehicle
@@danimaljjmnhj4308 well you have to remember that the 4bt is also built on the architecture of the 5.9 my guess is if Cummins developed a new version for consumers it would be based on the 6.7 making it a 4.5L which would probably make the power your looking for
I hope the 19 is revised. Would be nice if the tuning was updated similar to gde and if a keyway was put on the cam. Plus i cant stand the stock oil cooler design and crappy cooling fan. Any suggestions you recommend for any of those?
Has anybody seen these engines go past 200k miles without any problems? I've been looking and haven't found any. Most seem to have failures between 135k-185k miles.
You are talking about 200,000 miles on a three year old vehicle. How many people drive more than 65,000 miles per year? In 10 years you will find plenty of ecodiesel rams with more than 200,000 miles,... some with 500,000 miles on the original engine.
@@monkeycarz The ecodiesel has been in the RAM since 2014 and it was in the Jeep Grand Cherokee since 2013. There's a Ram Ecodiesel forum I was a part of that had a lot of people with more than 200k miles. It also had a lot of people with blown engines.
Those poor guineas do a pretty good job considering they designed the motor for use in Europe where the EU has gone full tard on the enviro emissions BS, self licking ice cream cone climate change lets kick ourselves in the junk for no reason regulations.

Hi Help me please, I bought 2015 ram 1500, ecodiesel 110,000 miles. The cars have already been cut by the previous owner dpf, catalyst and EGR. But unfortunately now there is such a problem that on a cold engine there is very high idle speed, 1700 RPM. After buying, I installed the catalyst on the car because it smells very much of gases. But the problem with IDLE did not disappear. Chek engine is off and there are no errors. Thanks
